Altarage/Cogwheel/Sentient Ruin Laboratories/Doomentia Records/2026 Full length Review

 

  Spain's  Altarage  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  experimental  blackened  death  metal  style  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "Cogwheel"  which  will  be  released  on  July  31st  as  a  joint  effort  between  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories  and  Doomentia  Records.

 A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  along  with  the  slower  riffing  also  adding  in  elements  of  doom  metal  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Touches  of  industrial  metal  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  album  also  adds  in  a  decent  amount  of  brutal  blast  beats.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  recording  also  having  its  experimental  moments  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  guitar  leads  also  bringing  in  more  of  a  darker  style  when  they  are  utilized,  drones  and  soundscapes  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  clear  singing,  clean  playing  is  also  used  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  apocalyptic  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Altarage  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACDKS  INCLUDE  "Peso  Muerto"  "1988"  and  "Industrial  Offering".  8  out  of  10.

Altarage/Nihil/Sentinent Ruin Laboratories/2016 CD Review

  Altarage  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an avant  garde  and  bestial  mixture  of  black  and death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  206  album  "Nihil"  which  was  released  by  Sentinent  Ruin  Laboratories.

  A  very  harsh  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  heavy  and  fast  musical  direction  that  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the fast  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  after  awhile  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a   great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

   A  lot  of  war  and  bestial  black  metal  elements  can  be  heard  in  the  bands  musical  style  while  the music  is  still  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  darker  side  of  early  90's  death metal  and the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of brutality  while  some  songs  add  in  a  small  amount  of distorted drones  and  there  is  also  a  small  amount  of  melody  in  some  of  the  riffing  along  with  some  of  the  vocals  using  more  of  a  growling  approach  and  as  the  album  progresses  some  of  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  touch  of  doom/death  and the  whole  album  also  remains  very  heavy  from  beginning  to ending  of  the  recording.

  Altarage  creates  an  album  that  takes  war,  black  and  death  metal  along  with  a  touch  of  doom  to  create  a  very  heavy  and  dark  sounding  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  yet  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Altarage  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  grade,  bestial  black/death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wormborous"  "Vortex  Pyramid"  and  "Cultus".  8  out  of  10.

  Altarage  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  a  very  avant  garde  form  of  bestial  black/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  demo  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Sentinent  Ruin  Laboratories  and  Sol  Y  Neive Records.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  death  metal  sound  starts  off  the  demo along  with  all  of  the musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  doom  metal  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  growls  take  the  music  in  a  bestial  black/death  metal  direction.

  Elements  of  war  metal  can  be  heard  throughout  the  recording  while  the  fast  parts  can  also  be  very  brutal  at  times  and  both  of  the  tracks  bring  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  high  pitched  screams  bring  in  both  elements  of  black  metal  onto  the  recording  and  at  times  the  slow  heavy  riffs  have  an  avant  garde  atmosphere  to  them.

  Altarage  plays  a  musical  style  take  takes  war  and  bestial  black  metal  and  mixes  it  in  with  brutal  death  metal,  doom  and  avant  garde  elements  to  create  a  style  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Altrarage  are  a  very  great  sounding  avant  garde,  bestial  black./death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Vortex  Pyramid".  8  out  of  10.
