Sacrilegium/Anoma Lucifera/Pagan Records/2016 CD Review

  Poland's  Sacrilegium  have  returned  with  their  comeback  album  that  has  been  awaited  for  20  years  which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  an  occult  black  metal  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Anima  Lucifera"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Pagan  Records.

 Avant  garde  sounds  start  off  the  album  giving  the  recording  more  of  an  experimental  feeling  along  with  a  touch  of  ambient  and  after  a  few  seconds  clean  guitars and  melodic  guitar  leads  make  their  presence  known  on  the  songs  along  with  the  guitar  riffs  getting  heavier  which  also leads  up to soem  grim  screams  and  the  music  going  into a  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction.

  Blast  beats  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  while  the  guitar  riffs  also  utilize  a  great  amount of  melody  and  they  also  mix  the  atmospheric  and  heavy  parts  together  along  with  the  synths  bringing  in  a  very  epic  like  quality  to  the  tracks  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  makes  a  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  ritualistic  spoken  word  parts.

  Sacrilegium  creates  an  album  that  moves  away  from  their Polish  pagan/black  metal  sound  of   the 90's  and  becomes  more  guitar driven  and  the  music  is  in  more  of  an  aggressive  occult  black  metal  direction  this  time  around  while  also  retaining  the  grimness  of  their  older  material,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  Luciferian,  Left  Hand  Path,  and  Occultism  themes  along  with  some  references  to  W.B  Yeats,  Leopold  Staff,  and  Ferdnando  Pessoa.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Sacrilegium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Angelus  (Anima  Lucifera)"  "The  Serpent  Throne"  and  "Venomous  Spell Of   Fate".  8  out  of  10.

Sacrilegium/Angelus/Pagan Records/2015 Single Review

  Sacrilegium  are  a  band  from  Poland  that  has  had  music reviewed  in  this  zine  with  their  musical style  being  more  in  a  pagan/black  metal  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  single  "Angelus"  which  will  be  released  on  December  28th  by  Pagan  Records  and  there  are  also  plenty  of  re-mixes  on  the  recording.

  Dark  and atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  single  giving  the  music  a  very  epic  feeling  and  after  a  few  seconds  it  starts  mixing  in  with  a  more  heavy  and  melodic  sound  which  also  introduces  grim  black  metal  screams  onto  the  recording  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  utilize  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  You  can  hear  a  touch  of  classic  metal  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up it  goes  into  more  of  a  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  direction  which  also  introduces  blast  beats  onto  the  recording  and  they  also  do  re-mixes  of  the  same  track  with  In  Slaughter  Natives  being  the  first  one  and  they  give  the  music  more  of  a  militant  industrial  feeling  while  the  re-mixes  from  Zenial,  ROD  and  Echoes  Of  Yul  bring  in  elements  of  experimental,  avant  garde,  folk  music,  dubstep  and  post  rock  while  the  demo  version  has  more  of  a  raw  approach  to  the  song.

  Sacrilegium  takes  one  song  that  is  mostly  a  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  and  mange  to  make  a  lot  of  different  musical  genres  work  in  the  same  song  with  all  of  the  re-mixes,  the  production  sound s very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this is  a  very  great  sounding  recording  from  Sacrilegium  and  if you  are  a  fan  of  this  band  or  the  many  styles  of  electronic  music,  you  should  check  out  this  single.  8  out  of  10.

Sacrilegium/Sleeptime/Witching Hour Productions/2015 CD Re-issue Review

  Sacrilegium  are  a  band  from Poland  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  pagan  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1994  demo  "Sleeptime"  which  was  re-issued  in  2015  by  Witching  Hour  Productions.

  A  very  dark  and ritualistic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  tribal  and  shamanistic  drum  beats  a  few  seconds  later  and  you  can  also  hear  folk  instruments  being  utilized in  the  background  and on  the  second  track  the  music  gets  more  heavy  and  faster  and  also goes  into  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  direction  that  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Vocals  are  perfectly  balanced  between  grim  and  high  pitched  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  dark  sounding  melodies  at  times  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  spoken  word  parts  are  utilized  they  give  the  songs  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  and  as  the  album  progesses  keyboards  can  be  heard  briefly.

  Sacrilegium had more  of a  raw  style  of  black  metal  in  the  early  days  and  focused  a  lot  less  on  keyboards  which  where more  dominant  on  later,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Slavic  Paganism,  Darkness  and  Nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Sacrilegium  and  if  you  are a  fan  of  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Empty  Side  Of  Soul"  and  "Darkness".  8  out  of  10.

Sacrilegium/Wicher/Pagan Records/2015 Vinyl Re-Issue Review

  Sacrilegium  are  a  band  from  Poland  that  played  an  atmospheric  form  of  pagan/black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1996  album  "Wicher"  which  will  be  re-issued  by  Pagan  Records  in  March  on  vinyl.

  Nature  sounds  along  with  some  atmospheric  elements  and  spoken  word  parts  and  after  a  minute  melodic  guitar leads  become  a  huge  part  of  the  recording  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  atmospheric  epic  black  metal  direction  which  also  utilizes  blast  beats  and  the  screams  sound  very  grim  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Throughout  the  recording  there  is  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  some  of  the  tracks  use  spoken  word  parts  and  the  faster  sections  have  a  very  raw  feeling  ans  one  of  the  later  tracks  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  melodic  chants  and  the  keyboards  also  have  a  symphonic  feeling  to  them  without  falling  into  the  mainstream  trappings  that  later  bands  fell  into.  and  on  a  later  song  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  on  a  couple  of  tracks  as  well  as  one  instrumental  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  and  the  bonus  track  also  adds  in  clean  singing  pagan  vocals.

  Sacrilegium  played  a  very  raw,  melodic  and  epic  keyboard  orientated  form  of  black  metal  for  their  time  and  had  more  of  an  underground  approach  to  this  instrument  than  the  alter  bands  that  came  out  in  the  following  years,  the  production  sound s very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Polish  and  cover  Slavic  Paganism.

  In  my  opinion  Sacrilegium  where  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  keyboard  orientated  pagan/black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Spiew  Krukow  Czamych  Cieni" "W  Rogatym  Majestacie  Snu"  and  "Wicher  Falami  Ognia".  8  out  of  10.
