Pensees Nocturnes/Douce Fange/Les Acteurs de L'Ombre Productions/2022 CD Review

 

  France's  solo  project  Pensees  Nocturnes  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  neo-classical,  avant  garde  and  depressive  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Douce  Fange"  which  will  be  released  on  January  21st  by  Les  Acteurs  de  L'Ombre  Productions.

  Percussion's  and  marching  style  band  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  animal  sounds  and  spoken  word  parts  which  also  return  on  later  tracks  while  the  music  also  adds  in  elements  of  jazz,  tango,  circus  and  musette  at  times  which  also  gives  the  recording  an  avant  garde  feeling  and  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.

  Clear  vocals  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along with  the  music  also  having  its  psychedelic  moments.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  being  utilized  when  the  album  speeds  up  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  Old  France,  Nihilism,  Absurdism  and  Solitude  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Pensees  Nocturnes  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Quel  sale  Bourreau"  "Le  Tango  du  Vieuloniste"  and  "Le  Semaine  Sanglante".  8 out  of  10.

Pensees Nocturnes/Grand Guignol Orchestra/Les Acteurs de L'Ombre Productions/2019 CD Review

  France's  Pensees  Nocturnes  are  a  solo  project  from  France  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  avant  garde  black  metal  and  neo-classical  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album  "Grand  Guignol  Orchestra"  which  was  released  by  Les  Acteurs  de  L'Ombre  Productions.

  Avant  garde  style  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  brass  instruments  being  added  into  the  music  a  few  seconds  later  as  well.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  they  also  mix  circus  music  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  as  well  as  the  vocals  also  adding  in  depressive  black  metal  screams.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  music  also  mixes  in  some  piano's, accordions,  and  theremin's.

  Melodic  guitars  leads  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  some  clean  avant  garde  style  vocals  also  being  utilized  at  times.  Death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  some  of  the  tracks  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  spoken  word  parts  also  make  a return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  nihilism,  solitude  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Pensees  Nocturnes  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Deux  bals  dans  la  tete"  "Les  valseuses"  and  "Triste  sade".  8  out  of  10.

  Pensees  Nocturnes  are  a  solo  project  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of neo-classical,  experimental.  and  avant  garde  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2010  album  "Grotesque"  which  was  re-issued  on  vinyl  in  2018  by  Les  Acteurs  de  l'Ombre  Productions. 

  Neo-classical  and  militant  beats  start  off  the  album  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  along  with  some  audience  reaction  being  used  briefly  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals are  a  mixture  of  black  metal screams  and  clean  avant  garde singing  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  at  times  the  music  gets  very  experimental  and  most  of  the  tracks a re  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  music  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  stringed  instruments  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  depressive  elements  and  the  tracks  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  influences  from  other  styles  of  music  and  the  album  closes  with  an  instrumental. 

  Pensees  Nocturnes  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  depressive  black  metal,  experimental,  avant  garde  and  neo-classical  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  nihilism,  solitude  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Pensees  Nocturnes  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal,  experimental,  avant  garde  and  neo-classical  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should check  out  this  solo  project.Paria"  and  "Thokk".  8/5  out  of  10.
