Autumn, Leaves, Scars/Unter dem Füße der trauerd Winde/Satanath Records/The End Of Time Records/2021 CD Review

 

  Autumn,  Leaves,  Scars  are  a  band  from  Romania  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  depressive  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Unter  dem  Füße  der  trauerd  Winde"  which  will  be  released  on  April  24th  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  and  The  End  Of  Time  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  and  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  lot  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Elements  of  post  metal  are  also  mixed  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  a  couple  of  instrumental  also  introducing  clean  playing  and  fire  burning  sounds  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  shoegaze  influences  onto  the  album  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  synths  can  also  be  heard  on  another  instrumental  and  they  also  add  in  a  touch  of  ambient.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Romanian  and  cover  life,  love  and  negativity  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Autumn,  Leaves,  Scars  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Der  Ausweg"  "Der  Ort  wo  sein  Herz  liegt"  and  "Weinende  Welt".  8  out  of  10.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the project for those that have never heard of you before?
1. autumn, leaves, scars is a one man band, an underground project, tries to fit among those bands that few people enjoy listening.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
2. i would say that, especially on the last record, I have a dark sounding tone. this project tries to approach the depressive black metal concept but in terms of sounding, I'm quite far. and probably that's a reason why some people say it's depressive/post-black metal and others. I try to make it better, I don't plan to leave it like it is. I consider that there's always room for better; and a lot for newcomers like me. at this moment, thinking of that "cold" tone that's a hallmark of DBM, mine is filled with... (low frequencies...) it's hard for me to describe it. Metaphorically, it's away from cold, but drowned somewhere deep.

3. What are some of the concepts and images you bring out with your music?
3. the concepts that I try to bring out are about some aspects of life that are rated as negative. I take those, and I try to picture the world through them. It's like modernism in literature - you're looking for beauty in uglyness. Seen through those concepts, the world is ugly.

4. You have done recordings with vocals and some all instrumental, how would you compare the 2 and are there any plans on using vocals again in the future?
4. I guess that if I'll decide to use vocals, they would be done by a guest. But for now, I intend to keep it instrumental. And about comparing the recordings that have vocals with those instrumental, in my opinion, the later are better mixed and mastered. I consider them better because of practice. The first EP was the first record I've made.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the projects name?
5. before choosing this, I was looking for a short one but all I could think of was taken. this came out of the blue and I though it's interesting. I wasn't searching for something particular. The result is ambigous I can say. spoken sounds like autumn leaves scars.

6.Currently there is only 1 member in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you choose to remain solo?

6. no, I don't plan expanding the line-up. as I said earlier, if I decide to put some vocals, they would be from a guest.

I intend to remain solo.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of depressive and post black metal?

7. I saw that someone posted some of my songs on youtube. I checked the comments and it was a positive feedback. And I guess that the gesture of posting them was because of positive appreciation. I'm grateful for that.

8. Are you currently involved with any other musical projects?

8. no, currently I'm not involved in other musical projects.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

9. at this moment, I have the quantity for another album but I will release them as an EP and I'll make something to fit with the last song I did. the material that I plan to release as an EP is more like the last album. But the last song is heading through a bit different tone. To be honest, Trist (cze) is the biggest influence (and Life is Pain).

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

10. for starting this project I was influenced most by depressive black metal bands like Tris (cze), Life is Pain, Make a Change... Kill Yourself and others like Shining and Lifelover. Last days I listened to Metallica's St. Anger which is the only album from them that I really like. Most people won't agree with me and I guess that most will dislike me because on my guitar practice and in general I listen to hardcore/metalcore/deathcore bands and others from '90s onward.

11.Outside of music what are some of your interests?

11. Besides music, I enjoy reading literature (don't do it not so much lately) and psychology (the scientific work not that for public) - I'm studying it.

12.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

12. Thank you for your interest. I need just a CD cover and the EP I was talking about is ready to go but I will wait a bit longer. Maybe I'll change a few things and I hope you'll enjoy my future releases.

  This  is  the  final  review  of  a  recording  from  Autumn,  Leaves,  Scars  which  continues  their  hybrid  of  depressive  black  metal  and  instrumental  post  rock  with  the  album  being  self  released  in  2013  and  called  "The  Story  Of  A  Life".

  Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  drumming  with  no  fast  playing  or  blast  beats  being  present on  this  recording,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  as  for  the  synths  when  they  are  utilized  bring  a  very  experimental  and  dark  ambient  sound  to  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  atmospheric,  depressive  black  metal  riffs  that  also  combine  influences  from  shoegaze  and  post  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  along  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  being  thrown  into  the  riffing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  dark,  atmospheric  and  melodic  sounding  post  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  enhance  the  post  rock  elements  of  the  album.

  Vocals  and  song  writing  are  all  absent  from  this  recording  with  the  music  being  all  instrumental,  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  darkness  and  depression,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  with  most  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Autumn,  Leaves,  Scars  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  depressive  black  metal  mixed  with  post  rock,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Things  That  Shall  Be  Burned"  "Highest  Walls"  and  "Fast  Travelling  Knives,  Something  Broken,  Yes  My  Heart".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
