Malum Mortuus/...And They Cried With The Voices Of Death/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Denver,  Colorado's  Malum  Mortuus  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  Tolkien  themed  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2024  album  "...And  They  Cried  With  The  Voices  Of  Death".

  Keyboards  and  drum  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  they  also  add  in  a  couple  of  Nazgul  and  one  Summoning  cover.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  clean  playing  also  being  added  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  most  of  the  music  is  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  era.

  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length   along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  growls  and  clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  acoustic  guitars  are  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  the  writings  of  J.R.R  Tolkien.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Malum  Mortuus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  and  Tolkien  themed  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Crown  And  Kingdom  To  Ash"  "Elficidium"  and  "Old  Mornings  Dawn".  8  out  of  10.

Malum Mortuus/On The Winding Stairs Of Cirith Ungol/2022 Live Album Review

 

  Denver,  Colorado's  Malum  Mortuus  have  returned  with  a  live  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  raw  and  old  school  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2022  album  "On  The  Winding  Stairs  of  Cirith  Ungol".

  Live  spoken  word  parts  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  Most  of  the  album  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  era  while  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  audience  feedback  also  being  added  into  the  background  at  times.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  adding  in  more  of  an  old  school  metal  style  when  they  are  utilized  as  well  as  one  of  the  songs  also  being  a  cover  of  Nazgul'  "Elficidium",  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Christianity,  Norse  Mythology,   Darkness  and  Evil  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Malum  Mortuus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  live  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Moon  That  Never  Sets"  "Whispers  of  Evil  Omen"  and  "Mark  Of  Usurpation".  8  out  of  10.

Malum Mortuus/Ashes Of The Traitor's Cross/Imperial Darkness Records/2022 EP Review

 

  Malum  Mortuus  are  a  band  from  Denver,  Colorado  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  ep  "Ashes  Of  The  Traitor's  Cross"  which  will  be  released  on  February  25th  by  Imperial  Darkness  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  era  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound   to  them.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Back  up  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  a  lot  of  the  songs  also  sounding  like  they  could  of  easily  been  recorded  and  released  more  than  25  years  ago,  death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  on  one  of  the  songs  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  the  closing  track.

  On  this  recording  Malum  Mortuus  goes  for  more  of  an  old  school  90's  influenced  style  of  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  War  and  Anti  Christianity  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Malum  Mortuus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ashes  Of  The  Traitor's  Cross"  and  "The  Blinding  Of  The  Far  Wanderer".  8  out  of  10.

Malum Mortuus/The Unwilling Sacrifice/Imperial Darkness Records/2020 EP Review

 

  Malum  Mortuus  are  a  band  from  Denver,  Colorado  that  plays  a  very  old  school  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  ep  "The  unwilling  Sacrifice"  which  was  released  by  Imperial  Darkness  Records.

  A  very  aggressive  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  a  small  amount  of  growls  and  back  up  shouts  can  also be  heard  briefly.

  Elements  of  thrash  metal  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  more  of  an  old  school  style.  The  songs  also  mix  in  some  influences  from  both  the  80's  and  90's  era  along  with  some  of  the  riffing  also  adding  in  a  good  amount  of  melodies  as  well  as  ep  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  they  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  The  Misfits  "Ghoul's  Night  Out".

  Malum  Mortuus  plays  a  style  of  black  emtal  that  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  as  well  as  mixing  in  elements  of  thrash  metal  to  create  a  sound  of t heir  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Christianity,  Occultism  and  Paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Malum  Mortuus  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  black  metal  band  with  elements  of  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Beneath  The  Ritual  Knife"  and  "Wolves  of  Retribution".  8  out  of  10
