Ancst/Dominion/Yehonala Tapes/2025 EP Review

 

  Germany's  Ancst  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  them  evolving  into  more  of  a  solo  project  and  going  for  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  crust  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2025  ep  "Dominion"  which  was  released  by  Yehonala  Tapes.

  Spoken  word  samples  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  while  the  vocals   are mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Elements  of  hardcore  and  crust  are  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  recording  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  more  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  On  this  recording  Ancst  goes  for  more  of  a  mixture  of  melodic  black  metal,  crust  and  hardcore  which  is  closer  to  the  style  found  on  earlier  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  personal  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  black  metal,  crust  and  hardcore,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dominion"  "As  Good  As  It  Gets"  and  "Always  Right".  8  out  of  10.

Ancst/Culture Of Brutality/Yenohala Tapes/Lifeforce Records/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Germany's  Ancst  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  moving  away  from  the  black  metal  style  of  earlier  releases  and  going  for  a  mixture  of  sludge,  death  metal,  grind,  hardcore,  screamo  and  crust  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Culture  Of  Brutality"  which  will b e  released  in  May  as  a  joint  effort  between  Yenohala  Tapes  and  Lifeforce  Records.

  A  very  heavy  and  brutal  death  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  aggressive  sounding  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast b eats  and  grindcore  elements  can b e  heard  along  with  some  of  the  riffing  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody.

  The  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  mix   influences  of  hardcore,  screamo  and  crust  punk  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  black  metal  touch.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  metal.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  short  in  length  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized,  spoken  word  samples  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  gentrification,  wage  slavery,  capitalism,  sexism,  metal  health  and  the  issues  of  modern  western  society.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  while  some  black  metal  fans  might  not  like  the  new  direction,  I  can  see  this  album  appealing  to  fans  of  crust,  grind,  hardcore  and  death  metal.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Armed  With  Despise"  "Damaged  Goods"  "Teeth  into  Flesh"  and  "Gatekeepers  From  Hell".  8  out  of  10.

Ancst/Summits Of Despondency/Lifeforce Records/2020 Full Length Review

  Germany's  Ancst  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  in  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  mixture  of  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  and  crust  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Summits  Of  Despondency"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Lifeforce Records.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great amount  of  melody.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling.

  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  crust  or  hardcore  style  of  screaming  while  the  songs  also  add in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording.

  One  of  the  later  songs  is  also  an  instrumental  and  also  introduces  clean  playing  and  synths  which  also  adds  in  some  touches  of  ambient  onto  the  album,  the  music  also  mixes  in  some  elements  of  crossover  and  d  beat  at  times  as  well  as  a  later  track  also  introducing  female  vocals  onto  the  recording  and  growls  are  also  added  on  a  few  songs.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  political  topics,  social  injustices,  mental  illness  and  anti  Nazi  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kill  Your  Inner  Cop"  "Praising  the  Realm  Of  Loss"  "...Of  Dying"  and  "Monolith".  8 out  of  10.

  Germany's  Ancst  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  their  mixture  of  melodic  black  metal  and  crust  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  ep  "Abolitionist"  which  will  be  released  on  November  16th  by  Lifeforce  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  in  between  black  metal  screams  and  hardcore  style  shouts  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  crust  elements  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Germany's  Ancst  and  Depravation  which  was  released  by  Yehonala  Tapes  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Ancst  returning  with  their  melodic  mixture  of  black  metal  and  crust.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  blast  beats  and  raw  tremolo  picking  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  angry  hardcore  and  crust  style  screams  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  spoken  word  parts  are  added  onto  the  second  track  as  well as  a  small  amount  of  melodic  guitar  leads,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  social  criticism  and  anti  capitalism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Old  Darkness".

  Next  up  is  Depravation  another  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  moves  way  from  the  crust  and  hardcore  elements  and  focuses  more  on  a  raw  and  melodic  style  of  black  metal  with  some  death  metal  touches

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  and  raw  sound  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  death  metal  at  times,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Depravation  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Moloch".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  i  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black  metal  and  crust.  8  out  of  10.

  Melodic  guitar  leads  start  off  the  album  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  deep  black  metal  screams.

 This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Germany's  Ancst  and  King  Apathy  which  will  be  released  in  September  as  a  joint  effort  by  Supreme  Chaos  Records  Alerta  Antifachista Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Ancst  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  melodic  black  metal,  ambient,  and  crust  punk.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out with  atmospheric  soundscapes  which  also  adds  in  elements  of  ambient  as  well  as  the  riffs  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  when  they  are  added  onto  the  recording  which  also  leads  up  to  a  heavier  musical  direction  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  angry  screams.

  Elements  of  post  hardcore  can  be  heard  in  the  music  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up a   great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  some  elements  of  atmospheric  black  metal  while  a  great  amount  of  crust  and  d  beat  elements  can  heard  in  the  music,  when  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  the  first  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  while  the songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Ancst  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  black  metal  and  crust  punk  mixture  of  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  political  and  social  capitalism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal  and  crust,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Gehenna  Of  Fire.

  Next  up  is  King  Apathy  a  band  that  plays  a  melodic  mixture  of  post  black  metal,  crust,  metalcore  and  hardcore  punk.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  melodic  post  hardcore  style  guitar  leads  along  with  some  angry  screams  a  few  a  seconds  alter  that  mix  black  metal  and  metalcore  together  along  with  the  music  also  sounding  very  modern  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  elements  of  hardcore  punk.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  focus  being  more  on  a  mid  tempo  style,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anarchism  and   Environmentalism themes.  

  In  my  opinion  King  Apathy  don't  do  much  for  me  with  their  post  hardcore  and  black  metal  mixture but might  appeal  to  fans  of  this  genre.

  In  conclusion,  while  I  enjoyed  the  material  from  Ancst  I  could  not  get  into  the  following  band , so  I  can  only  recommend  the  first  side  of  the  split.  6/5  out  of  10.

  Ancst  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  mixture  of  black  metal  and  crust  from  previous  recordings  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016 album  "Moloch"  which  will  be  released  on  April  15th  by  Halo  Of  Flies.

  A  very  heavy,  raw  and  aggressive  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  angry  black  metal  screams  and  after  awhile  melodies  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  in  the  faster  sections  of  the songs  and  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  crust  and  post  hardcore  elements  while  the  solos  and  leads  bring  more  of  a  melodic  style  to  the  recording  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  on  later  tracks  the  vocals  start  using  more  growls  that  also  expand  on  the  hardcore  influences  of  the  bands  musical  style  and  later  songs  bring  in a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts.

  Ancst  creates  another  recording  that  takes  raw  black  metal,  crust,  post  hardcore  and  screamo  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  another  very  heavy  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  modern  world  issues.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Moloch"  "In  Decline"  "Turning  Point"  and  "Lys".  8  OUT  OF  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Germany's  Ancst  and  Ast  which  was  released  by  Vendetta  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Ancst  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  mixes  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  with  crust  and  noise.

  There  side  of  the  split  starts  off  with  a  very  heavy  and  raw  crust  sound  that  evolves  into  more  of  a  melodic  black  metal  direction  once  it  speeds  up  and  adds  in  blast  beats  while  also  mixing  in  the  rawer  side  of  the  genre  as  well  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  have  an  angry  hardcore  feeling  to  them.

  All  of  the  musical  instrument s on  their  side  of   the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  side  to  them  and  they  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  growls  at  times  and  the  later  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  one  of  the  tracks  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  and  you  can  also  hear  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  on  the  last  track,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw,  yet  very  powerful  at  the  same  time,   while  the  lyrics  cover  the  angry  and  anti  fascist  themes  of  previous  recordings  but  also  bring  in  more  darker  topics  this  time  around.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Seizures".

  Next  up  is  Ast  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  raw,  post  black  metal,  hardcore  punk  and  experimental.

   Distorted  sounding  drones  start  off  their  side  of  the  split  along  with  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  heavy  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  post  hardcore  in  the  bands  musical  style  but  done  in  much  of  a  more  dark  and  heavy   direction  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  at  times.

   As  their  side  of  the  split  progresses  blast  beats  can  be  heard  at  times  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  one  of  the  tracks  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  before  making  a  return  to  a  heavier  direction  which  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  fast  and  raw  black  metal  guitar  riffs  before  closing  with  harsh  noises,  the  production  sound s very  dark,  raw  yet  powerful  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  are  more  in  an  anarchist  direction.

  In  my  opinion  Ast  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of   raw,  post  black  metal,  hardcore  punk  and  experimental,  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "F.S".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  crust  influenced  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Ancst/In Turmoil/Wooaaargh/2014 CD Compilation Review

  Ancst  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  and  crustcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  compilation  album  "In  Turmoil"  which  was  released  by  Wooaaargh.

  Dark  sound  effects  start  off  the  compilation  along  with  some  distorted  drones  a  few  seconds  later  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  samples  which  leads  up  to  a  heavier  musical  sound  and  then  aggressive  crustcore  style  growls  start  to  kick  in  and  after  awhile  you  can  hear  elements  of  melodic  black  metal  in  the  bands  musical  style.

  Blast  beats  can  be  heard  on  a  regular  basic  throughout  the  recording  and  after  awhile  more  raw  black  metal  elements  are  added into  the  music  along  with  a  more  crust  orientated  take  on  the  genre  and  the  band  also b rings  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  giving  the  band  more  of  a  post  rock  feeling.

  On  some  of  the  tracks  ambient  drones  are  brought  in  while  the  main  focus  remains  more  on  a  raw,  fast  and  melodic  musical  style  and  at  time s you  can  also  hear  elements  of  screamo  in  a  good  amount  of  the  tracks  and  spoken  word  samples  also  make  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  songs  and  towards  the  end  a  brief  melodic  black  metal  lead  finds  its  way  into  the  music.

  Ancst  takes  a  lot  of  songs  from  their  past  splits  and  ep's  and  create  a  compilation  that  displays  some  of  the  best  in  raw,  melodic  blackened  crust,  the  production  has  a  very  raw  and  heavy  sound  while  the  lyrics  cover  anti  racist,  anti  sexism,  and  anti  fascist  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  compilation  from  Ancst  and  of  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal  and  crust,  you  should  check  out  this  album>  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Entropie"  "The  Faceless"  "Howl"  and  "Peripheral".  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  with  Germany's  Ancst  and  Czech  Republic's  Smutecni  Slavnost,  both  bands  that  have  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  which  was  released  in  2014  as  a  joint  effort  between  Yeholalal  Tapes  and  Skull  Witch  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Ancst  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  black  metal  and  crust.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  off  with  guitar  distortion  and  spoken  word  samples  before  going  into  a  fast  blackened  crust  direction  along  with  growls  and  blast  beats  and  when  their  side  of  the  split  goes  into  other  songs  the  guitars  go  for  a  black  metal  route  while  the  vocals  remain  in  a  crust  style  growl  direction  and  you  can  also  hear  a  good  amount  of  d  beats  in  the  music.

  As  their  side  of  the  split  continues  clean  playing  is  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  post  hardcore  elements  and  at  time s they  also  bring  slower  sections  into  the   recording.

  Song  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  social  injustice,  anti  religion  and  anti  fascist  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  raw  and  heavy  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  crust,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Condition  Humana".

  Next  up  is  Smutecni Slavnost  which  continues  their  mixture  of  black  metal,  crust  and  noise.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  up  with  distorted  sounding  black  metal guitar  riffs  and  after  a  minute  grim  screams  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  some  melody  shortly  after  that  as  well  as  bringing  in  slow  sections  at  time s which  also  bring  a  depressive  feeling  to  the  recording  and  as  time  goes  on  by  there  is  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  on  the  outro  noise  sounds  are  added  into  the  recording

  Song  lyrics  are  written  in  Czech  and  cover  misanthropic,  anti  religion  and  anti  fascist  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  raw  and  heavy  sound  to  it  along  with  their  main  track  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Smutecni Slavnost  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  black  metal  mixed  with  crust,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Jak  se  rozloucin".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black  metal  and  crust.  8  out  of  10.

Ancst/Hiveburner/Skull Witch/Mustard Moustache/2013 Split Cassette Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  cassette  between  Germany's  Ancst  and  Hiveburner  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Skull  Witch  and  Mustard  Moustache  and  we  are  going  to  start  off  the  review  with  Ancst  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  raw  form  of  black  metal  mixed  with  crust  and  noise.

  Their  side  of  the  split  begins  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  drones  and  dark  guitar  riffs  before  going  into  a  very  fast  black  metal  assault  along  with  some  blast  beats  from  the  drums  and  then  the  music  starts  slowing  down  a  bit  and  grim  screams  make  their  presence  known  as  well  as  a  mixture  of  both  fast  and  slow  parts.

  By  the  time  we  get  to  the  second  song  hardcore  and  crust  elements  are  added  in  along  with  some  strong  melodic  black  metal  elements  and  the  band  continues  the  tradition  of  their  trademark  mixture  of  crust  and  grind  and  this  is  also  some  of  their  strongest  sounding  material.

  Song  lyrics  cover  anti  religion  and  anti  fascist  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  raw,  heavy  and  dark  sound  with  the  bass  guitars  being  mixed  down  low  in  the  mix  and  the  sound  focuses  more  on  guitars,  drums  and  vocals.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancst  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  crust  influenced  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Patterns  And  Dreamers".

  Next  up  is  Hiveburner  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  drone  and  sludge.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  off  with  some  drone  and  noise  sounds  and  after  awhile  guitar  distortion  along  with  some  heavy  doom  metal  guitar  riffs  and  drums  start  to  kick  in  while  also  having  some  harsh  noise  elements  in  the  background  which  also  lead  to  some  aggressive  vocals  that  have  a  hardcore  feeling  to  them  as  well  as  adding  black  metal  influences  into  the  screams  and  towards  the  end  the  music  speeds  up a  bit  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  crust  infuenced  growls  which  enhance  the  epic  elements  of  their  side  of  the  recording.  

  Song  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  with  their  only  song  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  

  In  my  opinion  Hiveburner  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge,  drone  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED.

Ancst Interview

1.Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

Torsten: Tom and me started this thing in late 2011. He sent me two instrumentals, i went into a rehearsal room and put vocals over it. Tom mastered these songs afterwards in his living room and the first demo consisting these two songs was released a couple of weeks later.
However the idea of Ancst existed quite longer and was only supposed to be a „studio project“, which means arranging, recording and releasing songs constantly.
As we're kind of rooted within the Berlin DIY-scene, it's not that difficult to involve other interested people/friends into Ancst, whether it's about co-releasing recorded songs, helping out with the arrangement of those songs.
I think it's easier to describe Ancst as some kind of collective than a band, every individual is welcome to share skill, emotion or just some kind words with us.
We're all in this shit together.

2.How would you describe your musical sound?

Torsten: DIY-Living-Room-Death-Black-Crust-Metal...?

Tom: If you dig blast beats,d-beats and a lot of 90's influenced metal riffing plus a dose of some spanish emo crust you might like it, I guess.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Torsten: I am mainly focused to reflect, describe and process situations i am surrounded by each day. Many people seem to be dull and not interested about things that are actually going on. Even me on some days. But on the other hand it's the peoples' unawareness about their passivity combined with the advantages of our modern times which creates many disadvantages like social exclusion, racism or several lifestyle diseases, just to name a few.
My lyrics are mostly about emotions and perspectives about these topics.
About the demons which haunt me from time to time. It's one of the hardest demands to stay sane and focused within this insanity where it has become a normal procedure to deal with loss or fucked up compromises just to make a living in this defective system.
I'm also into several anarchist ideas like emancipatory/non-hierarchic-capitalistic-/lifestyle, etc. and of course i know that it's not that easy to change this established systems by writing lyrics or screaming my throat sore.
It's a well-working vent, at least...
The most ideal but also very naively thought effect of the lyrics would be creating some empathetic impulses to others.
But what am i telling you? There are dozens of songs dealing with the exact same things i do. Maybe there's one tiny fragment that seperates...i still care.

What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

Torsten: Ancst is nothing more than an abstracted german word for fear. It's originally written Angst, but there are already too many bands using that name and that's the main reason for our notation.
Fear is basically something we have to deal with in our micro- and macrocosms.
It can weaken or strenghten us. I prefer the last effect.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

Torsten: Every recording session in Tom's living room – cheap energy drinks, sweat, etc.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Torsten: We're pretty busy with our other bands and, besides that, the daily grind(s). We also don't have a proper Line-Up incl. Drummer so it's pretty much hard to realise.
But I'd be glad to play a couple of shows...

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or received and interest?

Tom: Well you know, if noone wants to put it out we simply put it out ourselfs anyway so we are not realy searching for some big label or signing anything at all. so far we had the honour to release our newest tape "the humane condition" on Dark Omen Records, wich turned out pretty nice and our first demo on our collective label skull witch records and not to forget berlins mustard mustache tape label. Beside this we are planning some stuff on a few other labels but there is nothing confirmed so I keep this a secret for now.
anyway we are always intrested in working with some new people so hit us up if you like the tunes, dont be shy.

Torsten: It would be great to put out some vinyl.
And do i have to mention that we won't share a label with any NSBM- or Burzum-friendly-Crap as well as Sexists?

On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal and crust?

Torsten: I'd skip this question to Tom. He's the one with the marketing skills...

Tom: I mean we just started out and put out our debut EP so noone realy knows I guess. But there are several people who wrote us, ordered a tape and had something nice to say so Im realy thankful to all of these. We didnt expected much.

9.Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time lineup?

Torsten: I am currently playing Drums and trying to do the vocals in „Gamera“, a Berlin-based 3-Piece-Hardcore-Band.

Tom: We are meeting up every once in a while to record some stuff so we are far away from beeing a full time band but spend a lot of time with other projects. Im currently busy with singing for a powerviolence band called henry fonda and playing drums for my 90s hardcore band afterlife kids.

10.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

Torsten: Many ideas, some releases are already fixed theoretically and our heads are also already spinning about this one special idea.
But I'd rather walk the walk then just talk...

Tom: Im working on some more complex arrangments and realy wanna add some more details to the sound as well as to try out some new stuff. Cant realy say what comes out in the end. But the new split with hiveburner will again feature shorter songs and at least one of our upcoming releases will have some more melancholic feeling to it. the rest? suprise suprise!

11.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Torsten: As mentioned above the musical influences range from many different types of Metal/Crust/Hardcore.
Personally i'm listening to literally everything that touches me.
I won't mention any details, because i don't wanna put too many scene-points at stake. We need that big record deal, you know...?
Right now i'm heavily stuck into Rap...

Tom: I guess a lot of metallic hardcore, second wave black metal and too much d-beat shows did it for me when it comes to Ancst. I'm currently lost in dissection riffs and a lot of dark ambient music as well as the last two records by saint surly and monster monster.

12.Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Torsten: I am writing and releasing Zines from time to time, of course it's never enough output and i am lacking time and channels for the release of the beasts that slumber inside of me because i'm pretty busy with my two kids, the real life and high-quality HBO-Series....
Besides that, good vegan food, Vinyl and PMA.

  This  is  another  review  of  a  recording  from  Ancst  with  the  musical style  continuing  their  noise/crust influenced  primitive  black  metal  with  the  ep  being  released  in  2013  by  Dark  Omen  Records  and  called  "The  Humane  Condition"

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  noise/crustcore  with  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  with  some  melody  being  thrown  into  the   riffing  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  soft  and  clean  playing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording.

  Vocals  are  mostly  blackened  crust/grind  growls  with  some  spoken  word  samples,  while  the  lyrics  cover  anti  religion,  social  injustice  and  anti  fascist  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a very  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

  Ancst  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  raw  and  primitive  form  of  noise/black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  demo  which  was  released  by  Skull  Witch  Records.
