The Downspiral To Hell Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Right now, our main purpose is to promote the music included in our new recording “Unusual methods…” because we think we have been working hard to get something great for us, to develop something that is the reflection of our lives. At the same time but slowly, we start thinking about the next step, a new period of time writing, composing and recording music.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

The band is trying to get high levels regarding sound quality and recording methods. It is not easy to mix and shape everything when you work with a complex and varied composition, but we are trying to improve it every day. We think about our music coming to a complex, direct and aggressive fusion of different sounds.

At present, our music differs from our previous “The advent of neurosis” in which we displayed our death/grind background, but is similar to our first recording “Thorn” in a black metal approach.

3.This is your first album in 8 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?

It has been a very long period of time, always taking part in numerous artistic activities. Sometimes working to improve our sound as extreme band, sometimes recording music or just with our side project Odd. We are too busy; we can’t stop thinking about doing something involving creativity.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your newer music?

It’s not easy at all when we try to talk about an specific way concerning the lyrics in our music. I could tell you it is something like automatic writing; about us, the ideas and feelings flow, driven by a very creative state of mind. Somehow, we let the subconscious to express itself, without any particular arrange about lyrics. Actually, there’s no conscious pattern.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'The Downspiral To Hell'?

To tell you the truth I must refer the previous answer, because our name is directly related to our way of composing and feel the music. We have an absolute freedom when we make it, when we compose everything. It’s powerful and you can feel it as if you were inside a spiral, descending and ascending from side to side, inside out, outside in…well, it’s crazy! No limits and no emotion restrained!

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you chose to remain a duo?

We have been working this way for a long period of time. Our experience with a three or four members band was not bad, but not perfect at all. The freedom we found working as duo, both composing and conceiving, was impossible in the past years when more people were involved. So, without any doubt, we’ll keep this way in the future!

7.The album was released on 'Base Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Well, Base Records is a small and independent Spanish label that showed a true interest in our music when we started the promotion of “Unusual methods…”. It was very important for us to knew a real purpose about working together with this Cd, so we got a quickly and nice agreement to release only 100 digipack copies. It’s the first step and we look forward a good deal towards the future.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black, death metal and experimental music?

Generally talking we think about a good feedback when our music is reviewed, the expectation caused is limited because we need time and a good work to promote the band. Of course, another way is to have money or a strong label, but is not the case. We keep on working hard to spread our band name, we think and we assume our special point of view when talking about the extreme music we show, but at the same time we know there is an open mind audience waiting for new challenges, and here we are!

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that the band members are a part of?

Nowadays, our side project Odd is on hold because we are 100% focused on The downspiral to hell. However, it is as necessary as our main band in our life conception, another point of view about music, a different journey apart from extreme music. It is quiet, intimate as well, but alike satisfactory and persuasive for us. We hope to work out this way in the next few years.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

It is so difficult to find out something concrete about this question, especially because we listen to a great variety of sounds, different kinds of music, bands and…well, almost opposite each other. We left everything seeping into our minds, into our souls. This time black metal prevails, but future time perhaps differs just a little because of another of our influences. When we compose a song or an entire album, we never think about the kind of music to create, never. Summarizing, my answer could be similar to automatic writing regarding lyrics.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

The range of all music which influences our work and moreover, that we listen to, is very extensive. We talk about classical & contemporary music, film music, jazz, alternative and art pop/rock, black metal, brutal death, classical death metal, doom, thrash, avant-garde, prog music. No limits at all expect the mainstream music. Concerning the bands, you can imagine we can mention the traditional bands but also new ones that, from time to time, we find out.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Our main interest has been always related to Art in a global concept. We can refer to painting, literature, cinema, but also some things such as feel surrounded by wild nature, travel as much as possible, science knowledge…

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

It has been a pleasure to answer your questions, we want to thank you for your time and we´d like to say hello to all fans of your Zine!

The Downspiral To Hell/Unusual Methods To Dismember The Spiritual Halo/Base Records/2016 Full Length Review

The  Downspiral  To  Hell  are  a  duo  from  Spain  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  experimental  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Unusual  Methods  To  Dismember  The  Spiritual  Halo"  which  will  be  released  on  Halloween  by  Base  Records.

Drum  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  electronic  music  sounds  and  spoken  word  samples  can  also he  heard  at  times  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  and  faster  direction  along  with  some  black  metal  screams,  death  metal  growls  and  blast  beats  while  also  adding  in  melodies.

Clean  singing  can  be  heard  on  the  recording  at  times  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion  and  they  also  mix  the  synths  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  faster  riffs  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  clean  guitars  on  one  of  the  tracks  and  spoken  word  parts  also  return  on  a  later  song.

The  Downspiral  To  Hell  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  a  very  raw  and  grim  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  death  metal  along  with  some  experimental  and  avant  garde  elements  to  create  something  very  different,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  The  Downspiral  To  Hell  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Snake  Eyes In  Euphoria"  "The  Canvas  Of  Confusion"  "Thoughts  Through  Ethic"  and  "Outside  Emptiness".  8  out  of  10.
