Spectral Lore/11 Days/2023 EP Review

 

  Greece's  solo  project  Spectral  Lore  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2023  ep  "11  Days"  which  will  be  released  in  March.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  of f the  ep  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  and  synths  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  tracks.

  A  couple  of  the  songs  are  also  ambient  orientated  instrumentals  along  with  some  spoken  word  samples  and  field  recordings  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  all  of  the  heavier  tracks  sticks  to  mostly  a faster  musical  direction  with  only  a  brief  use  of  slower  sections.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  refuge  sea  route  to  Europe  through  the  Mediterranean  Sea  with  some  touches  of  fantasy  and  horror.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Spectral  Lore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Moloch"  and  "Adro  Onzi".  8  out  fo  10.

Spectral Lore/Ετερόφωτος/I, Voidhanger Records/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Spectral  Lore  are  a  solo  project  from  Greece  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  atmospheric,  cosmic  and  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "Ετερόφωτος"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  when  synths  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  also  getting  very  deep  sounding  at  times.

  When  clean  playing  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  progressive  feeling  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  some  melodic  vocals.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  one  song  also  introducing  classical  guitars  onto  the  album,  elements  of  noise  and  ambient  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  closing  track  is  mostly  instrumental  before  adding  in  some  choirs  and  chants.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature,  cosmos,  philosophy  and  esoteric  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Spectral  Lo9re  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  progressive  and  cosmic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED   TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Golden  Armor"  "The  Sorcerer  Above  The  Clouds"  and  "Terean".  8  out  of  10.

Spectral Lore/Mare Cognitum/Wanderers: Astrology Of The Nine/I, Voidhanger Records/2020 Double Slit Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  double  split  album  between  Greece's  Spectral  Lore  and  U.S.A's  Mare  Cognitum  called  "Wanderers:  Astrology  Of  The  Nine"  which  will  be  released  in  march  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Spectral  Lore  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  nature  orientated  field  recordings  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  while  all  of  his  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  the  music  also  capturing  a  lo-fi  atmosphere  at  times.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  vocals  also  getting  very  deep  at  times.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  his  side  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  of  the  slower  riffing  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  doom  metal,  all  of the  musical  instruments  on  his  side  of  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while t e  lyrics  cover  planets,  space,  philosophy  and  astrology  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Spectral  Lore  are  a  very  great  sounding  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Earth  (The  Mother"  and  "Uranus(The  Fallen)".

  Next  up  is  Mare  Cognitum  a  solo  project  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  emtal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  drones  while  all  of  his  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length   The  songs  also  mix  both  heavy  and  atmospheric  parts  together  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  tracks  also  bringing  in a   great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  deeper  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  more  of  a  melodic  style  while  the songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  good  amount  of  melody. 

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  dissonant  sounding  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  his  side  of  the  recording,  on  the  2  closing  songs  he  also  teams  up  with  Spectral  Lore  which  also  shows  the  music  getting  more  experimental  along  with  some  some  elements  of  ambient  which  also  introduce  synths  onto  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  planets,  space,  astrology  and  cosmic  mysticism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mare  Cognitum  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  emtal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Mars  (The  Warrior)"  and  "Neptune  (The  Mystic)".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  atmospheric  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.
