Knekelput Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We (K and M) met playing in a ‘beer metal’ band, then became pseudo-artistic intellectuals, and are now old. All music is written and recorded by the two of us over the span of a zillion years. Which is a lie, because the beer metal drummer contributed to our album with an interlude, some drum lines and heaps of rarely useful critique. We also wanted to work together with a girl we knew from going out, as she once enticed us by singing softly in our ears, but she has by now forgotten about us. For a long time we were too stubborn to allow others to touch our music, but in the end Colin Marston (Krallice, Thousand Caves Studio) made it possible to release our stuff this October.

2.You have an album coming out in October, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

Coming from the Dutch squat/artsy-scene we have listened to Krautrock, Neo-Folk, incomprehensible soundscapes, psychedelica etcetera. But we always loved Black Metal (Blashyrkh!) the most. This resulted in an atmospheric black metal album full of experiments. We are not even trying to be experimental, but throughout the years we have become unable to compose straightforward music in any style. At least this is the case for K, M is a musical genius who can do anything, probably, but luckily our styles match.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Good question. Some lyrics we wrote fifteen years ago, so I (K) do not even remember them. M had to sing them so he might have more of a clue. In general though it is about decay and how an eventual downfall is more inspiring than gradual progress.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Knekelput'?

It’s where the bones are collected after a grave has been cleared. Imagine the advanced stick figures a child could build from such a pit full of bones. Isn’t it inspiring?

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

We followed a chair through the city of The Hague, in the hope to catch it. It appeared to be drawn to something but we couldn’t figure out what it could be. At one point the chair stumbled over a human and lost a leg, but that didn’t stop it. In the dunes we lost sight of it and then spotted a table standing fiercely in the sea. The chair, we discovered later, was left rejected in the waves. It had killed itself. These are the stories told after mankind has disappeared.

6.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

We have played live, but not with this material. We will in the future, while we are also working on our second album.

7.So far very little is known about the band, are you planning on expanding into social network pages or do you prefer to keep a lower profile?

Not sure. As said, we are old, and not so social. We are glad we found Bandcamp and our music will appear on Spotify soon. Perhaps some label would like to help us get known, otherwise we will just make more music.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Sure, if they are nice to us.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

So far we have only presented the album to review websites like this one. You liked it, so thank you! After the release we hope more people will find our music.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Lately we have been thinking of adding in some major chords. Nowadays dissonants seem to be more common in black metal than major chords, so we will see how that works. Also, we would like to expand lyrically to the Arabic world, as there must be black metal fans out there, right? Black metal and atmosphere will always be the basis, for the rest we will let our creativity guide us. One thing is for sure; we will never make music that could be labeled as ‘post’, we are not post anything. Most ‘post’ bands seem to be post taste.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Misþyrming’s Söngvar elds og óreiðu album is still one of K’s most played records. More recently we are into Bekor Qilish too. Our influences mostly come from outside black/death metal though, as playing black metal comes naturally to us. As soon as we touch a guitar we start tremolo picking anyway. So inspiration can as easily come from Lou Reed, Shostakovich or Sleepytime Gorilla Museum as from other black/death metal bands.

12.before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Listen to our album, you will like it, and if not, listen to it again. And if you still think we suck, you can file your complaints here: https://knekelputband.bandcamp.com/

Thank you for listening and thank you for the interview.

Tragic  sounding  piano's  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  a  few  seconds  later.  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  and  most  of t he  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can b e  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals a r e mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  all  of t he  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.  Angry  shouts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  synths,  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  whispered  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  utilized  towards  the  end.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  existentialism,  misanthropy  and  nature  themes.

In  my  opinion  Ellende  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  post  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Unsterblitch"  "Someday"  and  "Abschied".  8  out  of  10.

Catacombes Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Catacombes is a black metal band, initially created in France in 2016 as a one man band. After settling in quebec I decided to look for other musicians. The French lyrics, tell the mischiefs of a drunkard possessed by the devil at the beginning of the 20th century, who took up residence in the catacombs.

2.Recently you have released a new full length, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

"Des glaires et des briques" is much more nuanced than previous releases.

"Le Démoniaque" can be off-putting for some people (not much changes between each track, except for "Pompe Funèbre", the only mid-tempo track on the album. "Acueille le Diable" offers a little more changes and originality.

Here the new album is much more elaborate.

First at the composition level, with mid-tempo pieces like "La Bête d'Acier" and its groovy bass, "La Brume" and its melancholic clean guitar arpeggios.

Others are faster with always something interesting to offer, like the addition of a few solos or on the track "Les Âmes Oubliées" with its kind of walking bass on the main riff.

If you want to get a quick overview of what the album has to offer, listen to "Cathédrale". This track alone sums up everything you can find on the album!

As for the lyrics, they are deeper, more varied also with more important themes than simple misdeeds of the Démoniaque. Overall, it's darker.

3.This is also your first released in 4 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during this time frame?

Nothing special, covid hasn't really affected plans or anything else. We did some few gigs before the pandemic and another one last fall. I didn't have too much time to devote to Catacombs during that time anyway.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

In this album there is more in depths themes. It goes beyond the simple salacious, violent or vulgar stories that can be found in "Le Démoniaque". As I said before, the lyrics are darker this time, more melancholy at times, still a bit violent of course but less vulgar and better written.

I'm more and more comfortable to write lyrics, I try to use different approaches, but I much prefer composition.

On the other hand, Catacombes was born from texts that I wrote, without links at first sight. Then I saw there was something to do with it, I found a background (the drunkard possessed by the devil) and that became the lyrics for the first album. Thereafter, I continued to tell the misdeeds of the Démoniaque and since I try to work out the thing!

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Catacombes'?

Catacombes, it's simply the landmark, the cache of the Démoniaque. It seemed obvious to me to name the group that way.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I wanted something that represents both drunkenness and murder, that people know what to expect. The corkscrew knife is the perfect object to represent this. And I wanted something different from what is usually done, with a layout where the texts are important in the visual. There were a lot of tests before, and it was not intended to be a photograph. I remembered I had an old corkscrew somewhere and in 5 minutes it was done: I put a bottle of wine and the knives on my wooden tv stand and I had my cover, in the middle of the kids evening bedtime rush!

You know, in the original shot, you can see a Henri Dès CD near the knife and a few toys lying around on the floor, near the bottle at the bottom of the image. Not very trve some will say.

7.The band started out as a solo project, what was the decision behind expanding into a full line up?

It was planned from the beginning, but the departure for Canada too. So I waited to move here to find other people. And it happened quickly. The best part is also finding a drummer near you (in quebec, where it's very large) with a very good jam room and everything you need to record, it's royal.

8.Originally the band was from France but now resides in Canada, can you tell us a little bit more about the move?

Well, it's a personal reason, to settle down, start a family here with my wife.

9.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

Yes, we did some gigs. During the Messe des Morts in 2018, it was our first show. Then others mainly in Montreal and another in Toronto. Our last show was at the Messe des Morts in 2021 and our next will be this fall... In Montreal again ahah. For next year we hope to do some more elsewhere in quebec at least.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

The reactions are generally good, but I don't pay too much attention to it, so I can't tell you more!

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I can tell you that the next Ep is already written and composed and that it will remain in line with the album, in a more furious way. After that, we will see according to the texts that I will have, because I generally write before starting to compose, it guides me for the composition in a way.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that you are currently listening to nowadays?

These days I'm listening to, Seth, Spectral Wound, Outre Tombe, Hollywood Burns... But the bands that I love is Metallica, Mastodon, Thy Catafalque, Twisted Sister, Sargeist, Summoning, Primus, Queens of the Stone Age, Windir etc

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you very much for this interview, thank you reader, and I hope you enjoy our latest album!
