Austria's Theotoxin have returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of a fast, melodic and aggressive style of black metal with some touches of death metal and this is a review of their 2022 album "Fragment: Totenruhe" which will be released in October by AOP Records.
A very dark, heavy and melodic sound starts off the album while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling and some of the tracks are long and epic in length.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. Some of the riffing also shows an influence of death metal along with one song also introducing clean playing onto the recording.
Some of the riffs and solos also show an influence of the Swedish style along with some synths also being utilized briefly which also adds in more of an atmospheric touch as well as some tracks also adding in a small amount of growls and the album closes with a cover of Marduk's "Frontschwein". The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and philosophical themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Theotoxin and if you are a fan of fast, aggressive and melodic black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "World, Burn For Us" "Demise Of The Gilded Age" "Perennial Lunacy" and "Totenruhe". 8 out of 10.
