Archemoron/Flagellum I/Satanath Records/Pluton's Rising Productions/2021 CD Review

Greece's  Archemoron  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  epic  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Flagellum  I'  which  will  be  released  on  April  21st  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records  and  Pluton's  Rising  Productions.

Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into a   very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  the  growls  are  also  done  in  a  very  demonic  style  when  they  are  utilized.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  old  school  style.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  guitar  leads  also  bringing  in  a  more  modern  approach  on  later  songs.  A  brief  use  of  semi  melodic  vocals  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  some  clean  playing  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  music,  spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  are  also  introduced  on  a  later  song.

Some  of  the  album  also  shows  an  influence  of  the  classic  Greek  style  along  with  some  influences  from  other  parts  of  the  world,  synths  and  horn  instruments  are  also  added  on  the  closing  song.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Esotericism  and  Philosophical  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Archemoron  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  epic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RFECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "When  Blades  Shape  Our  Feelings"  "Thronos"  and  "Utter  Tranquility".  8  out  of  10.

Archemoron/Year Of The Harvester/Southern Prayer/2018 Double Album Review

Archemoron  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  plays  an  epic  style  of  Greek  black  metal  with  some  death  metal  influences  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  double  album  'Year  Of  The  Harvester"  which  was  released  by  Southern Prayer.

Heavy  riffs  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  start  off  the  album  while  acoustic  guitars  and  nature  sounds  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  fast  parts  of  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams.

All  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  songs  also  giving  the  songs  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  when  they  are  utilized  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  utilizing  a  decent  amount  of  death metal  elements.

The  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  era  Greek  influences  but  also  keeping  everything  modern  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  semi  melodic  vocals  being  added  onto  the  closing  track.

Archemoron  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  epic  in  the  classic  Greek  tradition  but  modern  at  the  same  time,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Archemoron  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  Greek  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  double  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Somewhere  Beyond  North"  "Nebula  Divina"  "Clash  Of  Denial"  and "Those  Of  The  Suffering".  8/5  out  of  10.

Archemoron Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

The band was formed back in 1999. The name of the band at that time was Ancestor and the music direction was thrash metal. After changes in bandmates, we reached at this point under the name of Archemoron playing black metal.

2.So far you have released 2 albums, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other?

The first album “Spiritual transcendence” follows a more death/black direction than our new album “Sulphur and Fire” which is more black/epic. Nowadays our musical direction is concentrated in black/epic direction. Great guitar riffs, combined with dark melodies and outer-space guitar solos. Esoteric vocals and magical atmosphere.

3.This is the first album to be released since 2011, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap in between releases?

The energy wasn’t the appropriate. Now we are strong and hungry for music composition and self-expression. We are already working on new stuff. Beware.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Concerning lyrics we are interested in dark esoteric themes and battles with ourselves. We are interested also in historical and philosophical themes.

5.The band was originally known as 'Ancestor' and played a different musical style, what was the decision behind the musical and name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Archemoron'?

We had to change our first name because there was already existing another band with the same name. So we re-baptized the band, “Archemoron”. Archemoron is an ancient Greek/Hellenic word. The meaning behind the name is “the beginning of death”. As concern as the musical style, as we were growing up we wanted to express ourselves via more extreme music.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Our stage performance is in killer shape. We practice altogether at least two times per week. Although we have already given a few shows in our country, we decided to not give any more live shows. Black metal is something else than the other metal genres. Black metal is not an entertainment. Black metal is religion. Black metal is an esoteric research. No thanks, no goodnights. No shits.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Nothing at all and we are not planning to have. You see, we have Bathory and Burzum high in our musical and attitude preferences.

8.The new album was released on Cryptia Productions, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Cryptia productions is an underground black metal Greek/Hellenic label. We are proud to cooperate with them. It’s an honor for us to cooperate with such a dedicated and target-full label. The distribution of the album is via www.bowelofnoise.com

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
So far, so good. So what? Nice talks, great grades, magnificent reviews but truly…we don’t smile at all. It is nice to hear good words, obviously, but the most important is the fans to feel the same of what we feel when we are playing this music. To travel at the same time at the same place. Somewhere far beyond. This is the success.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
For the next record we are planning to follow the same musical direction. Black/epic metal. We will explore further the dark chords and scales. The fast parts will be faster and the slow parts will be slower.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Great influences are Iron Maiden, Bathory, Burzum, Immortal, Marduk, Inquisition. Every member of Archemoron listens to different stuff. Personally the last few days i listen to the last albums of 1349, Enthroned, Blut Aus Nord.

12.How would you describe your views on Occultism?
To many trends, to many false thoughts and to many false attitudes and false ways of approaches as concern as Occultism. But still there are hidden diamonds to discover. When you will find them, beware! New horizons will open your mind and unleash your fantasy.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
We live in difficult times, where magic is lost. Keep high the flag of resistance!

A  very  fast,  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  touch  of  death  metal  and  after  a  few  seconds  the  music  speeds  up  and  adds  in  blast  beats  along  with  some  grim  screams  and  the  band  also  brings  in  blackened  death  metal  style  guitar  solos  and  leads  in  some  parts  of  the  songs.

Throughout  the  recording  there  is  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  synths  are  utilized  they  give  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Sounds  of  nature  at  times  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  songs  at  times  along  with  a  small  amount  of  clean  singing  vocals  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  solos  and  leads  start  utilizing  more  melodies  while  some  of  the  faster  riffs  bring  in  more  of  a  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  feeling  to  the  tracks  and  a  couple  of  the  songs  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  and  they  also  bring  in  a  short  instrumental  before  making  a  return  back  to  a  heavier musical  direction  on  the  remaining  tracks.

Archemoron  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  aggressive,  heavy and  epic  sounding  along  with  some  atmospheric  elements  and  also  brings in  a  touch  of  blackened  death  metal  to  their  musical  style  as  will  as  being  heavily  influenced  by  the  Nordic  style  at  times,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  occultism  and  anti  christian  themes.

In  my  opinion  Archemoron  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Across  The Seven  Seas  of  My  Soul"  "Ancient  Callings"  "Preachers  Of  Heaven,  Maggots  Of  Earth"  and  "Lacerate  the  Mind'.  8  out  of  10.
