Depicting Abysm/Passage/Naturmacht Productions/2016 CD Review

  Depicting  Abysm  are  a  duo from Russia  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Passage"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  Nature  and  wind  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  and d rums  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  awhile  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  and  the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  a  very  depressive  and  melodic  sound to  the  recording.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  you  can  also  hear  clan  playing  and  mournful  cries  in  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  after  awhile  the  vocals  start  using  more  depressive  screams  and  melodic  singing  and  most  of  the  tracks  stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction  expect  for  the  last  song  where  the  music  speeds  up  briefly  and  also  adds  in  a  few  seconds  of  blast  beats  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  the  music  also  starts  getting  more  atmospheric  as  the  album  progresses  while  also  adding  in  synths  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  violins  on  one  of  the  later  tracks.

  Depicting  Abysm  creates  an  atmospheric  black  metal  album  that  is  very  slow  and  depressive  while  also  expanding  on  the  style  that  was  established  on  previous  recordings,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Depicting  Abysm  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  slow,  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Shadow"  and  "Unity".  8  out  of 10.

Depicting Abysm/Immersion/Naturmacht Productions/2013 CD Review

  Depicting  Abysm  are  a  band  from  Russia  which  have  also  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  that  plays  an  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Immersion"  which  was  released  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  "On  The  Waterfront"  which  is  also  the  first  song  on  the  album  opens  up  with  nature  sounds  before  adding  in  some  clean  and  distorted  guitar  playing  which  starts  getting  more  heavy  and  depressive  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  riffing  and  a  minute  later  programmed  drums  kick  in  and  you  can also  hear  bass  guitars  in  the  background,  in  addition  the  song  is  all  instrumental  with  no  vocals  being  present.

  "Descent"   begins  with  nature  sounds  and  psychedelic  sounding  synths  and  you  can  also  hear  clean  guitars  in  the  background  and  a  minute  later  melodic  black  metal  guitar  riffs  and  depressive  black  metal  screams  start  to  kick  in  and  after  awhile  guitar  leads  and  solos  start coming  in  and  out  of  the  music  as  well  as  some  fast  sections  being  added  into  certain  parts  of  the  music  as  well  as  the  bass  guitars  adding  more  power  to  them.

  "Le  Mariniste"  opens  up  with  acoustic  guitars  and  atmospheric  synths  and  a  few  seconds  later  heavy  and  melodic  guitar  and  bass  riffs  kick  in  along  with  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  drum  beats,  after  a  couple  of  minutes  guitar  leads  start  coming  in  and  out  of  the  song  which  also  leads  up  to  a  brief  use  of  death  metal  growls  as  time  goes  on  by  before  returning  back  to  black  metal  vocals  as  well  as  mixing  the  2  together  and  then  going  into  a  faster  direction  for  awhile  and  then  returning  to  a  slower  direction,  during  the  last  minute  acoustic  guitars return  and  close  the  song.

  "Anxious  Waters"  which  is  the  last  song  on  the  album  begins  with  depressive  black  metal  guitar  riffs  and  drum  beats  and  a  few  seconds  alter  melodic  guitar  riffing,  bass  and  high  pitched  screams  are  added  into the  song,  as  time  goes  on  by  guitar  leads  start  coming  in  and  out  of  the  song  along  with  a  brief  use  of  fast  guitar  riffing  before  going  back  to  its  more  normal  slower  direction,  when  the  song  gets  closer  to  the  end  its  goes  more  into  clean  guitar  playing  before  getting  heavy  again.

  Song  lyrics  are  inspired  by  the  poetry  of  Edgar  Allan  Poe  and  Semyon  Nadson  and  cover  ocean  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  heavy  and  dark  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Depicting  Abysm  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Le  Mariniste"  and  "Anxious  Waters".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Depicting Abysm/Windbrunch/Gmork/Silentium!/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2013 3 Way Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  album  between  Russia's  Depicting  Abysm,  Windbrunch,  and  Gmork  called  "Silentium!"  which  was  released  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records  during  the  year  of  2012  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Depicting  Abysm  a  band  that  plays  a  depressive from  of  atmospheric  black  metal.

  Drum  programming  ranges  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  beats,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a very  powerful  sound  to t hem,  as  for  the  synths  they  bring  a  very  dark,  atmospheric  and  ambient  sound  to  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow, mid  paced  to  fast  depressive  black  metal  screams  that  utilize  a  great  amount  of  dark sounding  melodies  in  the  riffing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  finger  picking  to  enhance  the  dark  atmosphere  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  are  all  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  that  utilize  a  very  depressive  tone  to  them  at  times,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  poetic,  and  depressive  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  with  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Depicting  Abysm  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  depressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "II".  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Windbrunch  a  1  man  band  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal.

  Drum  programming  ranges  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  beats,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  atmospheric  riffs  that  utilize  a  great  amount  of  melody  in  the  riffing  along  with  some  raw  and  primitive  elements  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  and  leads  present  on t heir  side  of   the  recording,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  they  are  only  used  briefly  and  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  enhance  the  dark  atmosphere  of  the  music.

  Vocals  and  song  writing  are  all  absent  from  their  side  of  the  recording  with  the  music  being  all  instrumental,  while t he  song  themes  cover  darkness,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  with  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Windbrunch  are  a  very  great  sounding  instrumental,  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out t heir  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "V'.  RECOMMENDED.  

  Closing  the  split  is  Gmork  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  primitive  form  of  depressive  black  metal.

  Drumming  ranges  from  slow, mid  paced  to  fast  playing  with  not  much  in  the  way  of blast  beats  along  with  some  programming  that  utilizes  some  drone  elements,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  depressive  black  metal riffs  that  utilize  some  raw  and  primitive  sounding  elements  as  well  as  some  melody  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing,  while  the  lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  are  very  dark  and  melodic  sounding  depressive  black  metal  guitar  leads.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal s creams  with  some  whispered  parts,  while  the  lyrics cover  dark  and  depressive  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  recording  from  Gmork  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Hate  Life"  which  is  a  Life  Neglected  cover.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  add  this  album  to  your  collection.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
