Wrong/Pessimistic Outcomes/Xtreem Music/2014 CD Review

  Wrong  are  a  duo  from  Spain  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Pessimistic  Outcomes"  which  was  released  by  Xtreem  Music.

  Avant  garde  and  rain  sounds  start  off  the  album  and  a  few  seconds  later  you  can  hear  the  voices  of  human  torture  which  leads  to  a  more  heavy  and  melodic  depressive  black  metal direction  along  with  some  suicidal  screams  and  you  can  hear  a  dark  atmospheric  sound  in  the  background  at  times.

  When  fast  parts  and  blast  beats  are  utilized  in  the  album  they  give  the  music  a  more  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  the  vocals  also  start  getting  more  grim  as  times goes  on  by  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  utilize  a  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  in  their  song  structures.

  Spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  when  they  are  utilized  gives  the  music  a  more  poetic  feeling  and  every  song  has  a  very  different  sound  to  them  while  also  remaining  true  to  a  raw  and  depressive  black  metal  sound  and  on  of  the  later  tracks  utilizes  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  and  the  band  also  brings  in  small  elements  of  post  rock  while  black  metal  is  always  the  main  dominant  factor  of  the  recording.

  Wrong  create  a  very  negative  and  pessimistic  approach  to  raw  and  depressive  black  metal  with  this  album  and  the  songs  on  the  recording  are  a  perfect  example  of  what  depressive  black  metal  should  sound  like,  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  sound  to  it  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  negative,  hateful  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from Wrong  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "His  Hatred  Breathes"  and  "Dragging  My  Soul  Until  the  Sunset".  8/5  out  of  10.

Wrong Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

When we were done recording Memories of Sorrow,  we couldn't wait to show our music so we released the digital edition. Fans became interested in the album and began to ask us about the physical release, so we started to contact with labels. We have also been working on a new album and producing a video clip of one of its songs. Currently we are rehearsing to present Memories of Sorrow album on November the 2nd in Madrid along with three other spanish black metal bands.

2.Recently you have released your first album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical direction you have taken with this recording?

We wanted to create a common project within the atmospheric black metal genre that suited the taste of both. We have been working on previous projects together. We like dark, depressed and melancholic passages and melodies. Also try to mix loops from different parts of the song to give some obsessive environment, like going around in a padded cell.

3.The song lyrics cover Dystopian themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interests in this topic?

Our concept is centered in a post-apocalyptic and dystopian future, where survivors of a devastating earthquake in the center of the earth, struggle to survive in the most grim misery, between death, disease, wild clans, cannibalism and savagery. To us it’s a very appropriate context to tell stories that show the worst side of Man.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Wrong?

The word "Wrong" refers to a state of incorrectness, inefficiency or error in many contexts. Our country is going through a serious crisis that will last for many years. What better name than "Wrong" for a black metal band, which tells the worst of human behavior in an uncertain future in the midst of this collective pessimism?

5.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future?

We are happy with our current way of working. We are two musicians who complement each other well, so we don’t want to make the music with anyone else at the moment. Obviously for live shows will have session musicians.

6.The new album came out on Aphelion Productions, do you feel that they have done a lot for getting your name out there?

We believe that Ross from Aphelion works very hard and has done everything in his power to help with the release. Perhaps the promotion isn’t the strong point of Aphelion but it’s a great trader because Memories of Sorrow is available at major Internet dealers of this genre.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

The balance of acceptance has been generally positive. We have received by e-mail sincere greetings. The videos posted have many visitors, songs in bandcamp too and followers of social networks are increasing, the album it's being sold both digital and physical. We are glad.

8.What is going on with the other musical projects these days?

Phlegeton and Wormed will be on tour with the U.S. east coast from next week, presenting his latest album Exodromos. We recently finished the soundtrack and sound effects for video game #MindThief in our sound studio Delta314. We are finalizing the mixing and mastering of new album by Under Vultures. Also we are colaborating with Laura Diamond, a spanish fashion designer. We are making the song that will sound on her fashion show at Madrid Gothic Week.

9.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

We want to continue in this line of production. The only difference from the first album is the tuning of the strings is a tone lower. We keep the dark and depressing passages, with parts of false hope. Regarding lyrics, we’ll continue telling stories in the terrible reality before described.

10.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

There are a lot of bands that influenced us by making Memories of Sorrow, some to mention: Craft, Blut Aus Nord, ColdWorld, Svartidauði, Enslaved, Shining, Old-Ulver, Bethlehem, Leviathan, Darkthrone, Agalloch, Lifelover, Altar of Plagues, Drudkh, Lunar Aurora, Wolves in the Throne Room, Abyssic Hate, Isvind, Krallice, Hans Zimmer...

11.Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Phlegeton works on his graphic design studio (http://www.phlegeton.com) making logos and cover artworks for extreme metal bands around the world, among other works.

DP Rey is studying double bass at the Conservatory and he loves to make video editing works as a viral videos, video clips and short films.

Wrong/Memories Of Sorrow/Aphelion Productions/2013 CD Review

  Wrong  are  a  duo from  Spain  that  plays  a  very  depressive  form of  black  metal  with  avant  garde  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Memories  Of  Sorrow"  which  was  released  by  Aphelion  Productions.

  "They  Look At  Me"  begins  with  some  heavy  guitar  riffs  and  drums  along  with some avant  garde  style  guitar  riffing  which  also  utilizes  some  melody  and  then  the  depressive  black  metal  screams  make  their  way  into  the  song  and  after  awhile  you  can  hear  some  pianos  in  the  background  and  halfway  through  the  song  the  music  gets  a  little  bit  fast  for  awhile  and  also  brings  in  some  blast  beats  before  slowing  down  again  and  then  switching  back  and  forth  between  slow  and  fast  parts.

  "Through  This  Slit"  begins  with  some  dark  guitar  and  bass  riffs  along with  some  avant  garde  sound  effects  and  drums  and  then  the  grim  vocals  and  melodic  guitar  riffing  makes  its  way  into  the  song  along  with  some  pianos  and  halfway  through  the  song  there  is  a  brief  use  of  fast  and  primitive  elements  and  the  song  closes  with  some  soft  experimental sounds.

  "I  Prefer  So"  begins  with  some  dark  and  melodic  guitar  riffs,  bass  guitars,  drums  and  suicidal  black  metal  vocals  along  with  some  pianos  in  the  background  and  after  a  couple  of  minute  there  is  a  brief  use  of  guitar  leads  being  utilized  and  towards  the  end  the  music  gets  more  primitive  along  with  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats  before  going  back  to  a  more  slow  and  melodic  sound.

  "Now  I  Remember"  begins  with  some  acoustic  guitar  playing and  avant  garde sound  effects  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  heavy  guitar  riffs,  drums  and  vocals  start  kicking  in  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounds  in  the  background  and  after  a  minute  the  music  gets  fast  and  primitive  for  a  few  seconds  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  melodic  clean  singing  before  going  into  a  more  mid  paced  direction  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  riffing  and  then  the  music  starts  switching  back  and  forth  between  fast  and  mid  paced  parts  and  towards  the  end  you  can  hear  some  pianos  in  the  background.

  'I  Want  To  Hear  You  Scream"  begins  with  some  heavy  guitar  riffs,  drums  and  pianos  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  vocals  start  kicking in  and  after  awhile  the  music  gets  more  primitive  in  certain  parts  and  after  awhile  the  guitar  riffing  starts  bringing  in  some  melodic  elements  and  th e song  closes  with  some  avant  garde  sounding  piano  playing.

  Song  lyrics  cover  dystopian  and  depressive  themes,  while  the production  has  a very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  dark  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  still  having  a  raw  feeling  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  Wrong  are  a  very  great  sounding  depressive  black  metal  band  with  avant  garde elements  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre  you  should  check out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "They  Look At  Me"  and  "Now  I  Remember".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
