Ungfell are a band from Switzerland that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a folk inspired form of atmospheric black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Totbringaere" which will be re-issued in August by Eisenwald.
Water sounds and folk instruments start off the album along with some ritualistic sounding percussion also being utilized at times. Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams while acoustic guitars are also added into some parts of the music and during the faster sections pf the songs a great amount of blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is utilized it gives the songs more of a raw feeling while the solos and leads are done in a very melodic style. All of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them as well as the songs also having their atmospheric moments and they also mix the folk elements into the heavier sections of the recording at times.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some of the tracks being very long and epic in length. Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly and when clean vocals are utilized they give the music more of a pagan metal feeling and as the album progresses growls can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and the screams also start adding in a touch of dsbm. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics are written in Swiss and cover medieval death, horror, filth and sinister witchcraft themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ungfell and if you are a fan of folk inspired black metal, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Die bleiche Gottin" "Der Uzsieche und sine Grimmede" and "Der Opfersprung". 8/5 out of 10.
