Panopticon/Songs Of Hireath/Nordvis Produktion/2025 Compilation Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  compilation  from  Minnesota's  Panopticon  which  shows  the  music  being  in  more  of  an atmospheric  black  metal  and  the  album  was  released  in  2025  by  Nordvis  Produktion  and  called  "Songs  of  Hireath"  which  consists  of  unreleased  songs  recorded  between  2009  and  2011.

  A  very  heavy  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  compilation  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic post  metal  style  as  well  as  some  synths  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  Whispered  vocals  and  clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  compilation  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Harsh  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.  A  couple  of  songs  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  words  as  well  as  some  folk  instruments  also  being  utilized briefly  and  one  track  also  adds  in  t  ouch  of  blackgaze,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  indigenous  history,  green  anarchism  and  the  consequences  of  industrialization. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Panopticon  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Road  To  Bergen"  "Haunted  America  II"  and  "The  Eulogy".  8  out  of  10.

Panopticon/Laurentian Blue/Nordvis Produktion/2025 Full Length Review

 

 Minnesota's  Panopticon  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  moving  away  from  the  black  metal  elements  of  previous  releases  and  going  for  more  of  an  acoustic  direction  which  they  describe  as  being  'Northwoods  Americana'  or  outdooe  country'  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Laurentian  Blue"  which  was  released  by  Nordvis  Prodktion.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  and  also  bring  in  elements  of  folk,  country  and  Americana  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  clean  style.  Violins  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  the  guitars  also  adding  in  a  mixture  of  both  full  chords  and  finger  picking  as  well  as  each  song  also  sounding  different  from  each  other.

  Mandolins  and  banjo's  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  a  couple  of  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length  and  a  later  track  also  introduces  drum  beats  and  spoken  words  onto  the  album,  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  On  this  recording  Panopticon  move  away  from  the  black  metal  elements  and  electronic  instruments  of  previous  releases  and  focuses  more  on  an  acoustic  direction  which  also  mixes  country,  folk  music  and  Americana  together. The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  burden  of  regret,  the  passion  of  time  and  the  quiet  act  of  holding  on.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Panopticon  and  while  some  black  metal  fans  might  not  like  the  new  direction,  I  can  see  this  appealing  to  fans  of  folk,  country  and  Americana.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Liberation  Song"  "I  Want  To  Be  Alone"  "Down  Along  The  Border"  and  "Broken  Bars".  8  out  of  10.

Panopticon/Kentucky/Nordvis Produktion/Bindrune Reocrings/2017 CD Review

  Panopticon  are  a  band  with  members  from  Kentucky  and  Minnesota  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  folk  and  Americana  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Kentucky"  which  will  be  released  in  June  as  a  joint  effort  between  Nordvis  Produktion  and  Bindrune  Recordings.

  Americana  style  folk  instruments  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  bluegrass  elements  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into a   very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction  that  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking.

  Vocals a re  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  they  also  mix  the  folk  and  metal  elements  together  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  the  songs  also b ring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding   very  powerful.

  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length   while  the  riffs  also  get  very  melodic  at  times  and  the  songs  also mix  in  touches  of  the  more  modern,  atmospheric,  and  post  styles  of  black  metal  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  folk  music  style  clean  singing  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  used  briefly  and  slide  guitars  are  added  onto  the  closing  track.

  On  this  recording  Panopticon  takes  their  atmospheric  style  of  post  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  elements  of  bluegrass,  folk  and  Americana  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  Kentucky's  rich  cultural  history  and  the  coalmining  industry.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Panopticon  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bodies  On  The  Falls"  "Which  Side  Are  You  On"  and  "Black  Waters".  8  out  of  10.

Panopticon/Lake Of Blood/Lundr Records/2009 Split CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Kentucky's  Panopticon  and  California'a  Lake  Of  Blood with  both  of  them  being  featured  before  in  this  zine,  the  split  was  released  in  2009  by  Lundr  Records  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Panopticon  with  the  musical  style  being  atmospheric   black  metal  with  elements  of  folk  and  bluegrass.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  atmospheric  black  metal  riffs  that  also  utilize   some  melody,  drone  elements  and  death  and  doom  metal  influences,  while  the  elad  guitars  are  very  melodic,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  they  use  finger  picking  and  full chords  to  bring  elements  of  folk  music  and  bluegrass  to  their  side  of  the  split.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  with  some  spoken  word  samples,  while  the  lyrics  cover  conspiracy  theories,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  raw  and  primitive sound  with  one  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Panopticon  which  also  has  the  best  music  on  this  album  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "La  Passione  di  sacco  &  vanzetti".  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Lake  Of  Blood  with  the  musical  style  being  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black  and  death  metal.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  a  great  amount  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  atmospheric  black  metal  with  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  black/death  metal  guitar  leads.

  Vocals  are  all  deep  blackened  death  metal  growls,  while  the  lyrics  cover  misanthropy  and  isolation,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  dark  sound  along  with  a  mixture  of  live  and  studio  tracks.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Lake  Of  Blood  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  heavy  and  atmospheric  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Eternal  In  My  Domain".RECOMMENDED.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal  or  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  add  this  album  to  your  collection.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Vestiges/Panopticon/The Flenser/2013 CD Review

 This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Washington  D.C's  Vestiges  and  Kentucky's  Panopticon  which  was  released  by  The  Flenser  in  2013  and  we  will  start  of  the  review with  Vestiges  a  band  that  plays  a   very  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced,  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  sound  effects  bring  elements  of  drone  and  dark  ambient  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to fast  post  black  metal  that  utilizes  some  raw  and  primitive  sounding  elements  as  well  as  some  melody,  doom  and  crust  influences  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  soft  and  clean  playing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on t heir  side  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  range  from  deep  death  metal/crust  style  growls  to  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful, heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  with  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Vestiges  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  post  black  metal  band  with  elements  of  doom  and  crust  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "VII".  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Panopticon  a  band  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  pagan  post  black  metal.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  atmospheric  post  black  metal  riffs  that  utilize  some  raw  and  primitive  sounding  elements  as  well  as  some  melody  and  pagan  folk  influences  to  create  a  sound  of  their  as  well  as  some  soft  and  clean  playing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  post  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  which  are  only  used  briefly  use  finger  picking  to  bring  an  ethnic  feeling  to  the  recording.

  Vocals  range  from  deep  to  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  that  have  a  very  depressive  tone  to them  at  times  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing,  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  paganism  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  most  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Panopticon  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  post  black/pagan  metal  band  with  the  best  music  on  this  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical   genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "A  Letter".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  post  black  metal,  you  should  add  this  album  to  your  collection.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
