Some Happy Thoughts/Le Manque II/2016 Single Review

Some  Happy  Thoughts  are  a  band  from  Montreal, Quebec, Canada  that  has  been  featured  recently  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2016  single  "Le  Manque  II".

Heart  beats  start  off  the  song  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  and  avant  garde  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  track  is  12  minutes  in  length  and  after  awhile  melodic  guitar  leads  along  with  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  are  added  into  the  music  and  all  of  the  riffs  stick  to  a  slow  direction  while  also  bringing  in  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  song  more  of  a  raw  feeling and  they  also  mix  the  acoustic  guitars  in  with  the  heavy  parts  at  times and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.

Some  Happy  Thoughts  creates  a  song  that  is  over  12  minutes  in  length  and  sticks  to  a  very  slow  style  of  depressive  black  metal  while  still  also  being  very  raw  and  melodic  at  the  same  time,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are written  in  French  and  cover  depressive  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Some  Happy  Thoughts  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out this  single.  8  out  of  10.

Some Happy Thoughts Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
1- Of course. We've been looking to do a black metal project about 12 years ago and it miserably failed... Recently, we re-opened the project, and it gave us Épitaphe as a first official product. We wanted to explore a different facet of what is usually considered as DSBM and we're confident we achieved it.

2.In April you had released a demo, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
2- It's quite raw, but at the same time we managed to get a depressive feel throughout the demo. There's moments where it's quite calm, but others where it moves a lot - a balance between the living and the dead... We also opted for simplicity and doing so we noticed that it fits with our lyrics, where only life and death are absolutes, but if you can accept it, you'll die happy even if the world you see is dark and depressive.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
3- We explored the topic of life and death through Stoicism, a school of thoughts that believes that life and death aren't good or bad, but indifferent. We all die, so why would it be a bad thing? Especially since no one knows what death is, except being an inanimated corpse. So as long as you experienced sadness, but also happiness, you can say that your life is full and decide to leave it of your own will. We also wrote a song about someone that is ready to shoot himself, but he misses and wakes up in the hospital, more depressed than ever...

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Some Happy Thoughts'?
4- There are happy thoughts in our lyrics, but there's also a will to end our own life. Why must suicide always be about hating life and the world? Why can't we kill ourselves happily knowing that we fullfilled our life and are satisfied with it? The crushing part is really about those that missed their suicide and must linger around longer than expected - that is depressive. So yes, there are happy thoughts, there is hope, there is life, but there's also the opposite...

5.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you chose to remain a duo?
5- No. We work really well together and the only instance where the band would be bigger is if one day there's a demand for live performances.

6.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
6- Yes, we've submitted our demo to a few labels and haven't received any feedback so far. We're thinking of releasing a few tapes eventually - of course, once again, if there's a demand for it.

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of depressive black metal?

7- Strangely, we've received a lot of support from other countries than our own mostly! It's great feedback, they seem to understand what we've achieved and we're satisfied with it. Knowing that a complete stranger is taking the time to write you and tell you that your music is good is an amazing feeling and I can't thank them enough!

8.Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?
8- We received an offer for a side-project, but honestly we're already writing new material for Some Happy Thoughts, so we refused.

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
9- Regarding a full-length, we're not at that stage yet. We were planning to do this project and move to something else, but there are people that really likes it, so we're looking to expand our repertoire. We're also looking at making something more personnal, smoother and sadder too...

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10- To name a few bands that inspired us, we'd say Anti, Silencer, Hypothermia, Life Neglected, Niflheim (now Gris), etc.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
11- M.S. LeCri is a collector and 21 is a huge reader. We enjoy life like everyone else I guess.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
12- Thanks to everyone that is supporting us and that took the time to listen to our demo entirelly! It's really appreciated and we never thought we'd be doing this today, so a big thank you to Occultblackmetalzine for reviewing us and giving us the opportunity to answer some questions. Hails!
