Den Saakaldte/Faen i Helvete/Agonia Records/2014 CD Review

  Den  Saakaldte  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  on  this  recording  that  combines  depressive  black  metal  with  thrash,  doom  metal  and  elements  of  experimental  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Faen  i  Helvete"  which  was  released  by  Agonia  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  grim  screams  as  well  as  some  morbid  sounding  melodies  and  the  band  also  has  a  good  amount  of  thrash  elements  in  their  musical  sound  and  they  also  bring  in  a  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  When  clean  singing  and  spoken  word  parts  are  added  on  the  album  they  still  maintain  a  grim  and  dark  feeling  as  well  as  having  traces  of  avant  garde  in  their  sound  and  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  the  band  brings  onto  the  album  are  very  melodic  sounding  and  there  musical  style  is  very  true  to  the  Norwegian  black  metal  tradition  along  with  a  few  of  the  tracks  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  The  doom  metal  elements  are  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  music  and  the  band  shows  a  great  amount  of  progress  from  the  previous  recording  I  reviewed  a  few  months  back  and  almost  sounds  like  a  different  band  but  you  can  still  hear  the  depressive  black  metal  elements  when  the  band  adds  in  small  amounts  of  soft  and  clean  playing,  while  the  first  half  of  the  album  is  very  straight  forward  the  more  experimental  side  of  the  band  shows  on  the  later  tracks  while  always  remaining  true  to  their  Norwegian  black  metal  sound.

  Den  Saakaaldte  show  a  great  amount  of  progress  on  their  new  album  adding  in  a  more  catchy  style  of  black  metal  as  well  as  having  a  great  amount  of  thrash  and  doom  influences  and the  band  also  shows  that  they  are  not  afraid  to  experiment  with  their  sound,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover  depression,  emotional  and  paranoia  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Den  Saakaldte  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  Norwegian  style  black  metal  with  experimental  elements,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Din  Siste  Dag"  "Endelost  Ode"  and  "Ondskapens  Nodvendighet".  8  out  of  10.

Den Saakaldte/Morke Og Depresjon/Bylec Tum/2014 Cassette Re-Issue Review

  Den  Saakaldte  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  plays  a  very  experimental  and  depressive from  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2008  demo  "Morke  Og  Depresjon"  which  was  re-issued  on  limited  edition  cassette  by  Bylec  Tum  in  2014.

  The  ep  starts  out  with  ambient  sounding  synths,  drones   and  experimental  sounds  and  after  the  intro the  music  goes  into  a  more  experimental  black  metal  direction  along  with  saxophones  and  then  it  goes  more  into  a  more  straight  forward  and  old  school  direction and  brings  in  grim  screams  and  vocals.

  As  the  demo  progresses  more  fast  parts,  melody  and  depressive  elements  are  brought  into  the  music  as  well  as  some  clean  parts  and  melodic  vocals  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  retaining  the  experimental  and  avant  garde  parts  and  on  other  songs  you  can  also hear  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  growls.  

  After  awhile  acoustic  guitars  are  brought  into  the  music  along  with  melodic  guitar  leads  and  on  every  song  they  bring  in  a  different  sound  as  well  as  having  an  instrumental  which  continues  the  ambient  sounds  of  the  intro  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  classical  music  feeling  and  then  the  demo  goes back  into  a  heavier  yet  still  experimental  direction

  On  this  demo  Den  Saalkaldte  show  a  great  amount  of  diversity  and  they  take  influences  from  the  traditional,  melodic  and  depressive  forms  of  black  metal  and  mix  them  in  win  avant  garde  and  experimental  elements  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.

  Song  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover  depressive  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  sound  along  with  the  bass  guitars  being  mixed  down  low  in  the  mix  as  well  as  some  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  last  2  songs  are  bonus  tracks,  one  being  a  2006  demo  track  and  the  other  a  live  track  from  2009.

  In  my  opinion  Den  Saakaldte  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental,  depressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Drikke  Ens  Skal"  "Ode"  and  "Mesias".  8/5  out  of  10.
