Spiritwood/The Apparition of Horns/Loudriver Records/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Finland's  solo  project  Spiritwood  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric,  avant  garde  and  experimental  form  of  occult  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2025  album  "The  Apparition  Of  Horns'  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Loudriver  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  ambient  and  experimental  touches  and  the  synths  also  take  the  music  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  direction.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a raw  feeling.  Some  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a   good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length, when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  stringed  instruments.

  On  this  recording  Spiritwood  goes  for  a  more  avant  garde,  experimental  and  atmospheric  style  of  occult  black  metal  which  is  also  very  different  from  his  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  occultism,  isolation  and  decay  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Spiritwood  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  avant  garde,  experimental  and  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Apparition  Of  Horns"  and  "Diagrams  Of  The  Dying  Multiverse".  8  out  of  10.

Spiritwood/Cold Moon Blashemies/Humanity Plague's Productions/2018 CD Review

  Finland's  solo  project  Spiritwood  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  ambient  and  atmospheric  style  black  metal  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2018  album  "Cold  Moon  Blasphemies"  which  was  released  by  Humanity's  Plague  Productions.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  vocals  and  ambient  style  synths  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  at  times.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Distorted  sounding   melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  drums  also  getting  very  ritualistic  sounding  on  one  of  the  tracks  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling and  the  album  closes  with  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  nature  and  blasphemy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Spiritwood  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Necrocosm"  "Cold  Moon  Blasphemies"  and  "Archaeosis".  8  out  of  10.

Spiritwood/The Art Of Subliminal Wayfaring/Perkun Records/2018 CD Review

  Finland's  solo  project  Spiritwood  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2018  album  "The  Art  of  Subliminal  Wayfaring"  which  was  released  by  Perkun  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  guitar  leads  are  done  in  a  very  atmospheric  yet  melodic  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  at  times. Elements  of  noise  are  also  brought  into  some  parts  of  the  music  while  some  of  the  tracks are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  some  of  the  riffing  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times  as  well  as  the  music  also  capturing  a  depressive  and  melancholic  atmosphere  in  certain  parts  of  the  tracks  and  the  synths  also  get  more  diverse  as  the  album  progresses.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Spiritwood  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Skies  Made  Of  Scars"  and  "Surreal  Apocalyptic  Plantations".  8out  of  10.

 Finland's  Spiritwood  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  also  continues  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review of  his  2017  cassette  "Daemonia"  which  was  released  by  Barbatos  Productions.

  Sci fi  and  ambient  style  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  synths  and  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  and  the  atmospheric  and  ambient  elements  also  mix  into  the  heavier  side  of  the  songs  while  a   great  portion  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.


  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are d one  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  the  synths  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  while  also  mixing  in  a  very  lo  fi  atmosphere  along  with  a  small  amount  of  avant  garde  elements  and  the  music  usually  sticks  either  to  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

  Spiritwood  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  and  ambient  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  metaphysical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Spiritwood  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Daemones"  "As  I  Reach  The  Grey  Silence"  and  "Decadent  Twisted  Mirage".  8  out  of  10.

Spiritwood/Pantheon Of Silent Spirits/Hamerbund/2016 Demo Review

  Finland's  solo  project  Spiritwood  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  is  also  in  the  atmospheric  vein  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2016  demo  "Pantheon  Of  Silent  Spirits"  which was  released  by  Hammerbund.

  Grim  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  heavy  guitars  and  atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  demo  along  with  a  touch  of  dark  ambient  and  lo-fi  music  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  programmed  beats.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  distorted  yet  melodic  fashion  and  some  of  the  riffing  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  melody and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  main  focus  is  either  on  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

  Spiritwood  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  that  was  established  on  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  melancholic  and  metaphysical  themes.

Spiritwood/IV/Wulfrune Worxx/2016 EP Review

  Finland's  solo  project  Spiritwood  have  returned  with  a  new  ep  which  continues  the  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal  style  of  previous  recordings  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2016  ep  "IV"  which  was  released  by  Wolfrune  Worxx.

  A very  powerful  synth  sound  starts  off  the  ep  and  almost  has  a classical  music  feeling  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sound  a  few  seconds  later  as  well  as  having  some  grim  yet  high  pitched black  metal  screams  making  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melodic  riffing.

  When t he  music  speeds  up a   great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  while  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  also  incorporates  a  great amount of  ambient  elements  and  most  of t he  songs  stick  to  a  slow  musical  direction  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

  Spiritwood  plays  a  style  of  ambient  black  metal  on  this  recording  that  is  very  epic  and  atmospheric  while  also  having  its  rawer  moments,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism  themes.

  Spiritwood  are  a  solo  project  from  Finland  that  recently  had a  demo  reviewed  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2016  demo  "Walpurgis  Darkness"  which  was  released  by  Wolfrune  Worxx.

  Atmospheric  and  ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  demo  and  also  mix  in  with t he  heavier  sound  a  few  seconds  later  and you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  demo  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal s creams  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  Spiritwood  are  a  solo  project  from  Finland  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2016  demo  "The  Spiritwood"  which  was  released  by Wolfrune  Worxx.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  demo  along  with  some  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mix  in  with  the  synths  to  create  more  of  an  atmospheric  sound  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  grim  black  metal  screams  and  the  drum  beats  are  all  programmed  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  At  times  the  music  is  very  epic  and  when t he  music  speeds  up  it  brings  in  more  of  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  along  with  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and blast  beats  while  the  main  focus  remains  more  on  a  slow,  heavy  and  dark  style  while  the  vocals  do  add  some  depressive  elements  into  some  parts  of  the  songs.

   Spiritwood  creates  a  style  of  ambient  black  metal  that  is  very  epic  and  atmospheric  while  also  having  its  raw,  depressive  and  grim  moments,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Esoteric  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Spiritwood  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  ambient  black  metal  solo  project  and  if you are  a  fan of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Illustrations  Painted  On  The  Skin  Of  The  Mourning  Goddess".  8  out  of  10.
