Tjolgtar are s solo project from Kerney, Illinois that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on these recording played more of a raw, satanic and occult style of black metal and this is a review of his 2023 compilation album "Black Rhino Holocaust/Nuun Raaguun Skuulkuun" which will be released in March by Eternal Death and consists of his 2002 and 2004 demos.
70's style riffing starts off the compilation while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with a great portion of the tracks also being very long and epic in length and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is added into the faster riffing they also give the songs more of a raw feeling while growls can also be heard at times. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them along with some clear vocals also being utilized briefly and the tracks also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Touches of black'n'roll can also be heard at times along with some clean playing also being utilized briefly, on the second demo the solos and leads also add in more 70's rock influences as well as introducing the use of death metal growls and incorporating more clear vocals than the previous release, clean playing can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Satanism, Occultism, Black Arts, Sacrifice and Murder themes.
In my opinion this is a very great sounding collection from Tjolgtar and if you are a fan of raw, satanic, occult black metal and black'n'roll, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Halls Of The Pororium" "Tjolgtjarium Muun" and "Nuun Raaguun Skuulkuun". 8 out of 10.
