Schattenwald are a band from Germany that plays a very traditional and atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2026 album "Alle Hernach" which will be released in April by Solistitium Records.
Thunder sounds start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostyl angry sounding black metal screams while the music is very heavily rooted in the mid 90's era of the genre and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
When keyboards are utilized they also add in some atmospheric and symphonic touches while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. Growls are also utilized at times along with a a lot of the songs also adding in a great amount of spoken words and the riffs also add in a lot of melody.
Throughout the album you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them as well as a couple of songs also adding in a small amount of acoustic guitars and clean playing. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in German and cover the local story of the forest prophet "Muhlhiasl" who lived in the Bavarian Forest at the beginning of the 19th century.
In my opinion Schattenwald are a very great sounding traditional atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Daemmertage" "Der nachtwanderer" and "Winterland (Alle Hernach)". 8 out of 10.
