WitcheR/Öröklét/Filosefem Records/Beveria Productions/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Hungary's  WitcheR  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  old  school  form  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Öröklét"  which  will  be  released  in  November  as  a  joint  effort  between  Filosefem  Records  and  Beveria  Productions.

  Atmospheric  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  era.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  most  of  the  album  sticking  to  a  slower  direction,  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  closing  track  is  a  Frank  Schubert  cover  as  well  as  being  all  instrumental.

  On  this  recording  WitcheR  goes  for  a  very  slow,  atmospheric,  epic  and  keyboard  orientated  style  of  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Hungarian  and  cover  Witchcraft  and  Folklore  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  WitcheR  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  keyboard  orientated  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Örökség"  and  "Öröklét".  8  out  of  10.

WitcheR/Boszorkányszimfóniák/Filosofem Records/2024 EP Review

 

  Hungary's  WitcheR  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  classical  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  ep  "Boszorkányszimfóniák"  which  was  released  by  Filosofem  Records  and  consists  of  Tchiakovsky,  Handel,  Grieg,  Chopin,  Williams  and  Orff  covers.

  A  classical  orchestra  starts  off  the  ep  while  also  introducing  symphonic  elements  onto  the  recording  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  instrumentals.  Heavy  guitars  and  atmospheric  black  metal  elements  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  music  at  times  as  well  as  the  guitar  riffing  also  adding  in  a  good  amount  of  melody.

    When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  introduced  into  the  music  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  fast  playing  and  blast  beats  and  the  bonus  track  also  adds  in  some  rain  and  thunder  sounds.

  On  this  recording  WitcheR  takes  a  few  classical  songs  and  mixes  them  with  their  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while t he  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  WitcheR  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  classical  music,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Åses  død  (The  Death  of  Ase)  -  Peer  Gynt  Suite No. 1,  Op.  46,  No.  2."  and  "Carmina  Burana:  Fortuna  Imperatrix  Mundi  -  1.  O  Fortuna".  8  out  of  10.

  Hungary's  WitcheR  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  old  school  style  of  atmospheric  black  emtal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Lelekharang"  which  was  released  by  Filosofem  Records.

  Tragic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  influences.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  Female  vocals  can  also be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  drum  beats  also  being  programmed  as  well  as  most  of  the  music  sticking  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  album  closes  with  a  cove r of  Ludwig  Von  Beethoven's  "Moonlight  Sonota".

  On  this  recording  WitcheR  goes  for  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  epic  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  heavily  keyboard  orientated  and  rooted  in  the  90's  era.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and r aw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Hungarian  and  cover  Folklore  and  Witchcraft  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  WitcheR  and  if  you  are  a f an  of  old  school,  epic  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hamvak"  and  "Csendesen".  8  out  of  10.

Witcher/Nema gyasz/Filosofem Records/2020 EP Re-Issue Review

 

  Witcher  are  a  band  from  Hungary  that  has  had  a  couple  of  albums  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  ep  "Nema  gyasz"  which  was  re-issued  in  2020  by  Filosefem  Records  and  also  contains  a  bonus  track  that  was  not  available  on  the  original  version.  

A  keyboard  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  while  also  retaining  the  atmospheric  elements.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  The  keyboards  also  give  the  songs  more  of  an  epic  atmosphere  when  they  are  utilized  while  the  music  also  has  its  depressive  moments.  All  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction  along  with  the  music  also  showing  some  influences  of  the  mid  90's  keyboard  orientated  black  metal  bands  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  an  instrumental.

  On  this  ep  Witcher  played  mostly  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  style  of  keyboard  orientated  atmospheric  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Hungarian  and  cover  depression,  darkness  and  paganism  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Witcher  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Egyedul"  and  "Keresztuton".  8 out  of  10.

  Witcher  are  a  band  from  Hungary  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is a  review of  their    2019  album  "A  gyertak  csonkig  egneck"  which  was  released  by  Filosefem  Records.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  epic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  synths  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  and  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling.  A  great portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  depressive  sounding  melodies  while  the  keyboards  also  add  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  You  can  also  hear  a  good  amount  of  90's  influences  in  the  musical  style  along  with  the  slow  pace  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  doom  metal.

  When  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  track  more  of  a  raw  feeling  but  keeping  the  focus  on  more  of  a slow  or  mid  tempo  style  and  the  album  closes  with  a  cover  of  Pyotr  Ilyich  Tchaikovsky  "A  hattyuk  tava"  which  is  also  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Hungarian  and  cover  darkness,  depression  and  paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Witcher  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  keyboard  orientated  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  gyertak  csonkig  egneck"  and  "Az  utolso  utamon".  8  out  of  10.

Witcher/Csendes Domb/Neverheard Distro/2015 Cassette Review

 Witcher  are  a  duo  from  Hungary  that  plays  an  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  with  a  touch  of  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Csendes  Domb"  which  was  released on  cassette  by  Neverheard  Distro.

  Tragic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  giving  the  music  an  atmospheric  feeling  and after  the  intro  the  music  starts  mixing  in  a  more  dark  and  melodic  doom  metal  sound  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  start  becoming  a  huge part  of  the  tracks.

  Keyboards  and guitars mix  together  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  very  dark  and  melodic  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  very  depressive  atmosphere  at  times  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  sticking  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

   The  music  also  brings  back  some  of  the  more  90's  orientated  keyboard  driven  black  metal  sound  at  times  and  one  song  also  brings  in a  brief   use  of  growls  and  they  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  Ralph  Vaughn  Williams's  "The  Cloud  Capp's  Towers"  before  closing  with  a  bonus  track  that  is  present  only  on  the  cassette  which  also  shows  the  music  speeding  up a  bit  and  adding  in  more  of  a  raw  style  of  black  metal   which  also  uses  a  few  seconds  of  blast  beats.

  Witcher  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  bringing  back  some  of  the  keyboard  style  of  the  90's  while  also  mixing  in  doom  metal  influences  and  a  touch  of  the  more  more  depressive  sound,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Hungarian  and  cover  pain,  solitude,  hate,  philosophy  and  paganism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Witcher  are  a  very  great  sounding  depressive  and  keyboard  driven  atmospheric  black  metal  band  with  a  touch  of  doom  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Eltemettelek"  and  "Csendes  Domb".  8  out  of  10.
