Frostagrath/Under Your Black Wings/2018 Single Review

  Egypt's  solo  black  metal  project  Frostagrath  have  returned  with  a  new  track  which  continues  his  atmospheric and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  along  with  some  session  work  from  Sayed  Ragai  better  known  for  his  work  in  Sin  Prophecy  and  the  track  was  self  released  in  2018  and  called  "Under  Your  Black  Wings".

  Atmospheric  synths  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  track  which  is  also  9  minutes  in  length  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  also  introducing  spoken  word  parts  into  the  music  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  grim  black  metal  screams.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  and  atmospheric  style  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  song  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  song  a  more  raw  feeling  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  some  clean  vocals  and  whispers  also  being  used  briefly.

  Frostagrath  creates  another  track  that  remains  true  to  his  atmospheric  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  negativity,  sorrow,  depression  and  anti  life  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Frostagrath  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal, you  should  check  out  this  single.  8  out  of  10.

Frostagrath/Isolation/Rigorism Productions/2014 EP Review

  Frostagrath  are  a  1  man  band  from  Egypt  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  play  a  very  depressive  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2014  ep  "Isolation"  which  was  released  by  Rigorism  Productions.

  Sounds  of  wind  and  raw  guitar  riffs  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  which  also  get  deep  at  times  and  the  guitars  also  add  in  some  melodic  leads  along  with  an  atmospheric  background  being  present  on  the  music  and  there  is  also  a  good  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  present  throughout  the  recording.

  Most  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  slow  to  mid  paced  depressive  black  metal  musical  direction  while  also  still  displaying  a  great  amount  of  raw  aggression  along  with  all  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  pass  6  minutes  and  the  guitar  riffs  utilize  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  last  track  is  the  most  atmospheric  and  depressive  song  present  on  this  recording  and  it  also  brings  an  ambient  feeling  to  the  recording  as  well  as  speeding  up  a  bit.

  Frostagrath  remains  true  to  the  depressive  and  atmospheric  black  metal  sound  which  has  been  a  huge  part  of  all  of  the  recordings  he  has  released  so  far,  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  and  raw  sound  while  the  lyrics  cover  Negativity,  Sorrow,  Depression  and  Anti  Life  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Frostagrath  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Portal  of  Destruction".  8  out  of  10.

Frostagrath/Extinguishing The Flame Of Life/Rigorism Productions/2013 CD Review

  Frostagrath  are  a  1  man  band  from  Egypt  that  has  been featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  I  would  describe  as  being  depressive  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Extinguishing  The  Flame  Of  Life"  which  was  released  by  Rigorism  Productions.

  "A  Gate Of  Inner  Haze'' begins  with  some  soft  synth  playing  which  also  utilizes some  ambient  and  atmospheric  elements  and  a  minute  later  slow  and  heavy  guitar  riffs  along  with  some  drum beats  and  depressive  black  metal  screams  make  their  way  into  the  song  while  also  keeping  some  atmospheric  elements  in  the  background  and  towards  thee end  the  music  starts  and  you  can  hear  sounds  of  thunder  before  the  synths  make  a  return  and  you  a  different  sounding  key  than the beginning  parts  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts.

  "Drowning  In  A  Maze  Of  Mirrors"  begins  with  some  dark  sounding  ambient  black  metal  guitar  riffs  and  a  minuter  later  the  programmed  drum beats,  synths and  depressive  screams  start  kicking  in  and  after  awhile  some  clean  parts  are  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  parts.

  "Questioning  A  Disharmonic  Existence"  begins with  some  melancholic  sounding  dark ambient  synths  and a   few  seconds  later  heavy  guitar  riffs,  programmed  drum  beats  and  depressive  black  metal  screams  start kicking  in  and  as  the  song  moves  on  it  goes  into  a  more  atmospheric  direction  with  the  synths  getting  even  more  powerful  sounding  and  towards  the  end  a  brief  use  of  melodic  guitar  leads  are  added  into  the  song.

  'Existence"  begins  with  thunder  and  rain  sounds before  the  classical guitars  kick  in  which utilize  both  finger  picking  and  full chords  and  a  minute  later  heavy  guitar riffs,  drum  beats,  synths  and  deep  demonic  vocals  kick  in  and  you  can  hear  some  elements  of  doom metal  in  the  song  and  after  awhile t he  music  goes  into  a  soft  and  clean  direction  for  a  few  seconds  before  getting  heavy  again  along  with  a  brief  use  of  grim spoken  word  parts  that  evolve  into more  black  metal  style  vocals  and  towards  their  is  a  brief  use  of  melodic  guitar  leads  and  the  song  closes  with  the  classical guitars.

  "Extinguishing The Flame Of Life"  begins  with  some  dark  sounding  synths  and  depressive  screams  and  then  the  heavy  and  melodic  ambient  black  metal  riffs  and  drum  beats  start  kicking  in  and  the  music  starts  getting  a  lot  heavier  and  halfway  through  the  song  the  guitars  stop  for  awhile  and  the  synths  take  over  along  wit h some  classical  guitars  getting  added  into  the  mix  while  also  keeping  around  the  black  metal  vocals  and  adding  in  some  melodic  guitar  leads  which  after  awhile leads  up  to  the  music  getting  heavy  again  and  towards  the  end  there  is  a  brief  use  of  guitar  leads.

  "Escape  Farewell  Life  !"  begins   with  some  clean  guitar  playing and  synths  before  getting  heavy  and  adding  heavy  guitar  riffs,  drum  beats  and  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  halfway  throughout  the  song  melodic  guitar  leads  start  coming  in  and  out  and  the  song  closes  with  the  clean  guitars.

 "And  Finally  The  Death  Caverns  Will  Carry Out  My  Soul"  which  is  a  re-mastered  version  begins with  some  sound  effects  and  a  few  seconds  later  dark  ambient  synths  and  black  metal  screams  start  kicking  in  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  heavy  guitar  riffs  start  making  their  way  into  the  song  along  with  some  drum  beats,  bass  guitars  and  melodic  guitar  leads  and  after  awhile  deep  growls  are  added  into  the  song  before  the  music  goes  into  a  more  soft  and  ambient  direction  for  awhile  but  keeping  the  leads  and  vocals  which  leads  up  to  the  music  getting  heavy  again  and  a  few  minutes later t here  is  a brief  use  of  spoken  word parts being  utilized  and  towards  the  end  the  music  returns  to  a  softer  direction along  with  some  thunder  sounds.

  'The Prison Of  Mirrors" which  is  an  Xasthur  cover  as  well  as  a  bonus  track  begins  with  heavy  and  dark  guitar  riffs  along  with  some  programmed  drum  beats  and  after  awhile  the  grim  black metal  screams  start  kicking  in  and  after  awhile  synths  are  added  into  the  song  along  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  and  the  music  goes  into  a  more  atmospheric  and  depressive  direction  and  as  time  goes  on  by  the  riffing  gets  a  lot  more  diverse.

  Song  lyrics  cover  Negativity,  Sorrow,  Depression  and  Anti  Life  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  along  with  most  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Frostagrath  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Gate Of  Inner  Haze"  ''Extinguishing The Flame Of Life"  and  "And  Finally  The  Death  Caverns  Will  Carry Out  My  Soul".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Frostagrath/Viragha/Dust Shall Remain/Rigorism Productions/2013 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review of  a  split  album  between  Egypt's  Frostagrath  and  Sri  Lanka's  Viragha  called  "Dust  Shall  Remain"  and  released  by  Rigorism  Productions  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Frostagrath  who  have  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  depressive  black  metal.

  Drum   ranges  from  slow,  mid  paced  playing  with  no  fast  drumming  or  blast  beats  being  present  on  their  son,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark,  atmospheric  and  ambient  sound  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  tone  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  through  their  side  of  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  depressive  black  metal  riffs  that  utilize  some  raw  and  primitive  sounding  elements  at  times,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  depressive  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim sounding  depressive  black  metal  screams  with  some  deep  growls  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording  with  one  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Frostagrath  and  if  you  are  a  very  of  atmospheric  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording,  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "And  Finally,  The  Death  Caverns".  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Viragha  a  band  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  ambient  form  of  black  metal.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  ambient  black  metal  riffs  that  use  some  raw  and  primitive  elements,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very   dark  and  melodic  sounding  ambient  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  distorted  black  metal  screams  that  utilize  some  depressive  elements,  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Darkness,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  with  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Viragha  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  ambient  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Gospel  Of  Despair".  RECOMMENDED.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  of  fans  of  depressive,  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Frostagrath Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the project for those that have never heard of you before?

1-Frostagrath is a one man depressive black metal band from Cairo,Egypt in 2011. it holds the 

concepts : Melancholy,Negativety and Death,I adopted also the concept The Dark Side Of Life. so i try to get out what's on my head and put it all in the lyrics and the music.

I released a Demo entitled A DEPICTION OF MELANCHOLIC REALITY in nov.2012 then i released my first full-length entitled A JOURNEY OF INFINITE SORROW in 19.Feb.2013

Then finally i just released a single entitled INTO A DIMENSIONAL TIMELESS VOID 

in 11March 2013

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

2-I think i am a little bit satisfied about the sound quality,because i want to transfer my anger ,

emotions and anxiety into it , so there come the necessity of the raw sound of the instruments.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

3-I try to fill the lyrics with hatred,darkness i can do,and i try to ensure that we will eventually 

die and we will be tormented,and life is just an illusion we are trapped within it.

4. Can you tell us a little bit more about the project name?

4- I am a very big fan of Nargaroth,Gorgoroth...so i went that way,and in the same time i wanted

a name that defines the music of the project. so i came up at the beginning with FROST , then

i added AGRATH ,you may consider it as a tribute to these two great bands.

5. You call yourself Lord Mist, can you tell us what was it that interested you about this name to use it for your projects?

5-Since i was a child and i have always been interested in Mist,Fog,Blizzards...it's something that can lead someone to his death.and there is also another hidden reason is that sometimes i feel like if i am like a mist, blurred ; No one can know exactly what is going on inside me or inside my mind.

6. Currently there is only one member in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you choose to remain solo?

6-No,i prefer working alone,because i can get out the exact emotions as i feel into my music.My 

cousine helped me with the mixing and mastering sometimes.but i have no interest in letting others compose with me .

7. The new album came out on Visionaire Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

7-Visionaire Records is a promising record label from Italy Formed in 2011 i guess,and i think they will  have a very good future .

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of depressive black metal?

8-Actually the results was amazing,it make a big success,specially because i don't recall that we have Depressive black metal bands here in Egypt,people don't expect this genre to come from a country like Egypt , so i think i make a difference even if it was a small difference about how the others thinks about the metal scene here .

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

9-My next release will be totally different from any Frostagrath's previous releases,it will be 

something remarkable,it will include a better sound quality with a lot of melancholic melodies that emphasise the bitter atmosphere.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

10-I Am more into Depressive black metal and Raw black metal..Although,in some tracks on the previous album the influences of the Sweedish Death Metal band HYPOCRISY are very obvious.

.My favorite bands   areAnti,Xasthur,Nargaroth,Gorgoroth,Darkthrone,Drudkh,Nyktalgia...and a 

lot more.These days i can't stop listening to ANTI and Nyktalgia they are like gods to me.

11. Alot of bands cover Egyptian Occultism and Mythology in there lyrics but there does not seem to be alot of metal coming from that country except for maybe a few bands, what do you think is the cause of that?

11-This maybe because the extreme music doesn't has so much attention/Fans here in Egypt.a few who are in love with the extreme music for example :DSBM, and maybe because most of people here who doesn't like Metal music , have some weird thoughts and sick-believes about it which make some restrictions about it.I Think they just don't want to know something new.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

12-I Don't have a lot of interests, i spend most of my time in creating the music,reading books and learning about languages.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars   and  on  the  last  song  they h ave  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  as  for  the  synths  when  they  are  utilized  they  bring  a  very  dark  ambient  and  atmospheric  sound to  the  music.
