Winterfylleth/The Unyielding Season/Napalm Records/2026 Full Length Review

 

  Unted  Kingdom's  Winterfylleth  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  form  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "The  Unyielding  Season"  which  was  released  by  Napalm  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  When  keyboards  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  cellos,  some  songs  also  add  in  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars.    

  The  music  also  mixes  influences  from  both  the  old  school  and  modern  era's  of  the  genre  along  with  the  album  moving  away  from  the  folk  elements  which  where  present  on  earlier  releases.  One  track  is  also  an  instrumental  and  the  recording  closes  with  a  cover  of  paradise  Lost's  "Enchantment"  which  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  clear  singing.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  poetry  of  Sir  Phillip  Sidney  and  Ancient  British  History.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Winterfylleth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Echoes  In  The  After'  "The  Unyielding  Season"  "In  Ahen  Wake"  and  "Enchantment".  8  out  of  10.

Winterfylleth/The Siege Of Mercia/2019 Live Album Review

  United  Kingdom's  Winterfylleth  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  folk  orientated  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2019  live  album  "The  Siege  of  Mercia"  which  will  be  released  in  September.

  Live  audience  interaction  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very melodic  yet  atmospheric  style  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Clean  pagan  vocals  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  along  with  some  clean  playing  also  being  utilized  in  some  parts  of  the  music  as  well  as  some  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  elements  of  folk  music  and  the  album  closes  with  a  synth  version  of  "Children  Of  The  Stones".  The  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  Ancient  British  History,  Anglo  Saxon  Literature,  The  Natural  World  and  Landscapes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  WInterfylleth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  live  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Swart  Raven"  and  "Defending  the  Realm".  8  out  of 10.

Winterfylleth/The Divination Of Antiquity/Candlelight Records/2014 CD Review

  Winterfylleth  have returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  their  folk  orientated  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "The  Divination  Of  Antiquity"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Candlelight  Records.

  A  very  dark  and  raw  black/pagan  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  fast  riffing  and  blast  beats  which  leads  up  to  high  pitched  screams,  melodies  and  an  atmospheric  background  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  enhance  the  atmospheric  and  melodic  nature  of  the  bands  musical  style  and  some  of  the  slower  sections  bring  in  elements  of  doom  metal  but  done  more  in  a  raw  and  depressive  direction  and  after  awhile  acoustic  guitars  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  they  add  more  of  a  folk  orientated  and  progressive  sound  to  the  songs  they  are  utilized  on.

  The  melodic  chants  and  vocals  that  are  used  on  the  recording  bring  in  a  more  pagan  atmosphere  to  the  bands  melodic  approach  to  black  metal  and  on  some  of  the  tracks  small  amounts  of  death  metal  growls  are  utilized  while  the  songs  halfway  through  the  recording  shows  a  more  raw  black  metal  side  to  the  way  the  guitar  riffs  are  approached,  after  a  few  tracks  that  are  heavy  an  acoustic  piece  finds  its  way  onto  the  recording  and  the  melodic  vocals  start  heavy  more  of  a  powerful  sounding  presence  while  the  last  2  songs  go  back  to  the  bands  epic  black  metal  roots.

  Winterfylleth  creates  another  raw  sounding  black/pagan  metal  album  that  is  very  melodic  and  epic  while  also  being  very  atmospheric,  progressive  and  folk  influenced  at  the  same  time,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anglo  Saxon  Paganism.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Winterfylleth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The Divination Of Antiquity"  "A  Craveworn  Heart"  and  "Forsaken  In  Stone". 8  out  of  10.

  Winterfylleth  are  a  band  from  the  U.K  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  which  plays  a  very  atmospheric,  raw  and  primitive  form  of  folk  inspired  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their 2012  album  "The  Threnody  Of  Triumph"  which  was  released  by  Candlelight  Records.

  Drums  range  from slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the music  at  times,  while  the  keyboards  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  music  along  with  a  brief  use  of  violins,  as  for the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  along  with  a  good  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  and  folk  metal  influences  being  thrown  into  the  riffing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  full  chords  to  bring  a  more  medieval  sound  to the  music.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  with  some  clean  singing  being  thrown  into  the music  at  times  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  deep  growls,  while  the  lyrics  cover  England's  history,  main  events  and  battles,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  recording  from  Winterfylleth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Swart  Raven"  "The  Glorious  Plain"  "Void  Of  Life"  and  "The  Threnody  Of  Triumph".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Winterfylleth/The Ghost Of Heritage/Candlelight Records/2012 CD Re-Issue Review

  Winterfylleth  are  a  band  from  Manchester,  England  that  has  had  their  previous  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  sound  that  I  would  describe  as  being  atmospheric  pagan/black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2008  album  "The  Ghost  of  Heritage"  which  was  re-issued  by  Candlelight  Records  during  the  year  of  2012.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  music when  they  are  utilized,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  epic  pagan/black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  raw  and  primitive  sounding  at  times  long  with  a  brief  use  of  dark  sounding  melodies  with  the  songs  being  long  in  length  along  with  a  couple  of  instrumentals  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  full  chords  and  finger  picking  to  bring  an  epic  medieval  pagan  feeling  to  the  music.

  Vocals  range  from  hateful  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  that  have  a  depressive  feeling  to  them  at  times  to  clean singing  pagan  metal  vocals  along  with  some  Gregorian  themes  and  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  in  addition  there  is  a  small  use  of  deep  growls  being  utilized  on  a  song  as  well  as  some  whispers  on  the  bonus  track,  while the  lyrics  cover  Runes,  Anglo  Saxon  Paganism,  Heritage,  History  and  Battles,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful.  professional  and  heavy  sound  to  it  while  still  retaining  the  raw  and  primitive  nature  of  the  music.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  a  great  album  from  Winterfylleth  and  if  you  where  a  fan  of  their  last  album,  you  should  check  this  one  out.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Mam  Tor  (The  Shivering  Mountain)"  "The  Ghost  Of  Heritage"  "Forging  The  Iron  Of  England"  and  "Casting  The  Runes".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Winterfylleth/The Mercian Sphere/Candlelight Records/2010 CD Review

  Winterfylleth are a band from the U.K that plays a pagan form of black metal that has a folk and melodic edge and this is a review of their 2010 album "The Mercian Sphere" which was released by Candlelight Records.

Drums cover a good amount of variety with drumming that ranges from slow, mid paced to fast with a lot of brutal blast beats, while the bass playing has a very strong sounding tone that follows the riffs that are coming out of the guitars as for the flute  when it is used it evokes memories of medieval times with a very ancient feel.

Rhythm guitars are mostly pagan/black metal guitar riffs that range from being slow, mid paced to fast with a good amount of melody, while lead guitars when they are used a very melodic sounding guitar leads, as for the acoustic guitars it brings a heavy folk/pagan element to the music with the use of open chords and some melodic finger picking that has the feel of a classical guitar.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some deep growling as well as clean singing viking metal vocals, while the lyrics cover, while the lyrics cover Anglo Saxon Heritage, pride and paganism as for the production it has a very professional sound and you can hear all of the musical instruments that are used on this album.

In my opinion Winterfylleth are a very good pagan/black metal band and while they are not the most original sounding band, they still do a great job with their music and fans of pagan/black metal will find this to be a very good addition to their collection. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Gateway The Wayferer Part 1" "The Honour Of Good Men" "Defending The Realm" "A Valley Thick With Oaks" and "When The Woods Were Young". RECOMMENDED BUY.
