This is a review of a split album between Red Boiling Springs and Dim Lords called "Only Fools Prefer The Past" which will be released on May 21st as a joint effort between Trepanation Recordings and Pristine Blight and we will start off the review with Red Boiling Springs a solo project that plays a shapeshifting form of harsh noise.
His side of the split starts out with some dark soundscapes and drones while static style harsh noises and power electronics are also added into some parts of his songs. All of his tracks also sound very different from each other which also gives the recording more diversity as well as one song also bringing in high pitched screams which also adds in a touch of black metal, a later track also adds in a brief use of spoken word parts. The production sounds very dark and the concepts are heavily influenced by Frank Herbert's novel "Dune".
In my opinion Red Boiling Springs are a very great sounding harsh noise solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out his side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Extract" and "Revelry Of Regression".
Next up is Dim Lords an anonymous project that plays a very raw and dissonant form of black metal.
Their side of the split starts out with a very dark, heavy, dissonant and melodic sound while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic yet dissonant style along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them, touches of psychedelia and noise rock can also be heard at times, clean vocals are also added on their closing track. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are based upon Frank Herbert's novel "Dune".
In my opinion Dim Lords are a very great sounding raw and dissonant black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Golden Smoke" and "The Wind That Eats Flesh".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and would recommend it to all fans of harsh noise and raw and dissonant black metal. 8 out of 10.
