Werian/Animist/Eisenwald/2019 CD Review

  Werian  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  with  some  elements  of  psychedelic,  desert  rock  and  jazz  fusion  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "Animist"  which  will  be  released  in  2019  by  Eisenwald.

  Nature  orientated  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  a  few  seconds  later  while  ritualistic  spoken  word  parts  are  also  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  all  3  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  the  riffs  also  start  getting  more  heavier.

  Vocals  are  mostly  deep  yet  grim  black  metal  screams  while  elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  music  along  with  the  riffs  also  using  a  decent  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  while  the  tremolo  picking  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  they  are  utilized  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  in  desert  rock  and  jazz  fusion  elements  at  times  as  well  as  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  psychedelic  sounds  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording,  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  whispers  and  clear  vocals  and  the  closing  track  brings  in  more  of  a  shamanistic  atmosphere.

  On  this  recording  Werian  continues  their  mixture  of  atmospheric  black  and  doom  metal  while  also  adding  in  elements  of  psychedelic,  desert  rock  and  jazz  fusion  to  take  their  sound  to  another  level,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  shamanism,  lycanthropy  and  consciousness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Werian  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "March  through  Ruins".  8  out  of  10.

Werian/Lunar Cult Society/Eisenwald/2017 Compilation Album Review

  Werian  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays a  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  along  with  some  elements  of  experimental,  rock  and  psychedelic  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  compilation  album "Lunar  Cult  Society"  which  was  released  by  Eisenwald.

  Clean  yet  distorted  playing  starts  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  a  very  raw  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  being  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal.

  At  times the  vocals  have  their  somewhat  melodic  moments  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  some  of  the  songs  also  mix  in  elements  of  classic  and  psychedelic  rock.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  guitar  leads  bring  in  a  very  raw  and  melodic  style  along  with  the  music  also  getting  more  experimental  as  the  album  progresses  as  well  as  one  of  the  later  tracks  introducing  death  metal  growls  onto  the  recording  and  all  of  the  tracks  sound  very  different  from  each  other  and  the  closing  track  was  recorded  live.

  Werian  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly rooted  in  black  and  doom  metal  while  the  experimental,  rock  and  psychedelic  elements  gives  the  songs  more  originality,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  shamanistic  and  Lycanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Werian  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  experimental  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Werian" "Into  The  Twilight"  and  "Among  Humans".  8  out  of  10.
