The Great He-Goat/Last Rites For A Generation/2014 Full Length Review

The Great He-Goat are a band from Oklahoma which has had their previous material reviewed before in this zine that plays a very raw, melodic and grim form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2014 album "Last Rites For A Generation".

The album starts out with a dark dungeon synth style sound before going into a more fast and raw black metal direction along with blast beats and grim vocals as well as adding in old school melodic death metal elements while the main focus is still black metal along with an atmospheric background which also leads to a mixture of mid paced and fast parts before bringing in melodic metal solos.

As the album progresses acoustic guitars and traditional metal influences are brought into certain sections of the music along with some slower parts that bring in a depressive feeling to the recording before finding their sound with the more fast and melodic material which they are really good at and after awhile you can hear a small amount of symphonic elements form the keyboards but they are mostly in the background and do not over power the album.

With this album The Great He-Goat show a great amount of progress with their music while the music does has its raw black metal moments they also bring in a great amount of melody, melody and a small amount of atmospheric and symphonic elements as well as a traditional metal feeling and you can tell the band does not follow any trends and it shows with the diversity they bring onto the album.

Song lyrics cover darkness and occult themes, while the production has a very dark, powerful and heavy sound along with the bass guitars being mixed down low in the mix as well as some of the songs being very long and epic in length.

In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from The Great he-Goat and if you are a fan of heavy, fast, grim and melodic black metal, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Hollow Victory" and "The Cloak Of Shadows". 8 out of 10.

The Great He-Goat/Kantharos Raised Above Me/2013 Demo Review

This is a review of another recording from The Great He-Goat which continues their old school and depressive approach to black metal with the demo being self released in 2013 and called "Kantharos Raised Above Me".

"Kantharos Raised Above Me" which is the title track as well as the first song on the demo opens up with drum beats and black metal style guitar and bass riffs which also lead to grim vocals kicking in as well as the guitar riffing getting more melodic and halfway through the song there is a brief use of guitar solos and leads as well as some spoken word parts.

"The Cloak Of Sorrow 2013" begins with acoustic guitar playing and a few seconds later heavy guitar and bass riffs along with drums kick in and after awhile the music goes into a more melodic and mid paced direction along with black metal vocals for a few seconds but being mostly instrumental and there is also a brief use of fast and clean parts as well as a few seconds of synths and towards the end guitar solos and leads are utilized for a short period of time.

Song lyrics cover dark and depressive themes, while the production has a very strong, powerful and heavy sound for being a self released recording where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording along with the last song being very long and epic in length.

In my opinion this is another great sounding demo from The Great He_goat and if you are a fan of old school, melodic and depressive black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Kantharos Raised Above Me". RECOMMENDED

The Great He-Goat/Demo 2012 Review

The Great He-Goat are a band from Tulsa, Oklahoma that plays a very depressive form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2012 demo.

"A Hollow Victory" which is also the first song on the demo opens up with dark nature sounds and a few seconds later fast and raw black metal riffs kick in along with drums and shouts in the background which also leads up to grim black metal vocals and after awhile the guitar riffing also utilizes some melody and after a few minutes the music goes into a more slow and depressive direction as well as bringing in melodic guitar leads which also leads to a few seconds of acoustic guitars before getting heavy again.

"The Traveller in The Cloak Of Shadows" begins with night sounds and a few seconds later acoustic guitars come in along with drums and bass guitars before adding in heavier guitar riffs which after awhile get more melodic when the grim vocals kick in and the song sticks to a mid paced direction for a couple of minutes before adding in fast parts as well as returning to the clean sections for a few seconds which also leads to the music slowing down again and then alternating between fast, slow and clean parts along with a brief use of guitar leads.

"The Cave of Forgotten Dreams" opens up with dark ambient sounds and a few seconds later there is a brief use of spoken word samples before adding in slow depressive black metal guitar riffs and drums along with grim vocals and you can also hear bass guitars in the background which in return also leads up to some melodic guitar leads that come in and out of the song and towards the end the guitar riffing gets more melodic.

"A Hollow Victory" which is also the last song as well as an instrumental is the same song as the first one but with no vocals being present.

Song lyrics cover dark themes, while the production has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it while you can still hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording as well as the songs being very long and epic in length.

In my opinion The Great He-Goat are a very great sounding grim, melodic depressive black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Traveller in The Cloak Of Shadows" and "The Cave of Forgotten Dreams". RECOMMENDED BUY.
