Amiensus/Oak Pantheon/Gathering I & II/Caus Belli Musica/Beverina/2019 Compilation Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  compilation  album  from  Minnesota's  Amiensus  and  Oak  Pantheon  which  contains  their  "Gathering I" ep of  2013  and  "Gathering  II"  ep  in  2018  and  will  be  released  on  a  single  album  in  May  of  2019  as  a  joint  effort  between  Casus  Belli  Musica  and  Beverina  and  we  will  start  the  review  with  the  tracks  from  Amiensus  a  band  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  progressive  form  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  compilation  starts  out  with  some  acoustic  guitars  which  also  add  elements  of  folk  music  onto  the  recording.  Atmospheric  and  folk  elements  can  also  be  heard  in  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  and  all  of their  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  music  getting  very  progressive  at  times.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  grim  black  metal  screams  and  clean  vocals.  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  which  also  gives  the   songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  post  metal  elements.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  philosophy,  theology,  psychology,  and  mythology  themes.

  In  my  opinion  these  are  some  very  great  sounding  tracks  from  Amiensus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out t heir  side  of t he  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Arise".

  Next  up  is  Oak  Pantheon  another  band  that  has  also had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  with  elements of  folk  music.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  heavy  yet  melodic  riffing  which  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  goth  rock.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  most  of  their  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  are  utilized  it  gives  their  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  When  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  bring  in  elements  of  progressive  and  folk  music  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  utilized  briefly  while  clean  vocals  and  death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  on  the  closing  track  they  team  up  with  Amiensus.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  philosophy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  these  are  some  very  great  sounding  tracks  from  Oak  Pantheon  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  post  black  metal  with  elements  of  folk  music,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "A  Gathering".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  atmospheric,  progressive  and  post  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Oak Pantheon/The Void/2011 EP Review

  Oak  Pantheon  are  a  duo  from  Minnesota  that  plays  an  atmospheric  version  of  post  black  metal  along  with  some  folk  music  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2011  ep  "The  Void".

  "In  The  Dead  Of  Winter  Night"  begins  with  some  soft  acoustic  guitar  playing  along  with  some  synths  in  the  background  and  then  goes  into  heavy  guitar  riffs  and  drums  along  with  some  melodic  post  metal  guitar  leads  shortly  after  that  which  also  sets  up  the  pace  for  some  grim  black  metal  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  some  whispers  in  the  background,  as  the  song  moves  on  their  are  some  classic  metal  riffs  being  utilized  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  before  reverting  back  to  the  acoustic  guitars  while  also  keeping  around  the  heavier  elements  and  adding  in  some  melodic  riffing.

  "Fear  Me"  begins  with  some  folk  music  style  acoustic  guitars  before  going  into  heavy  post  black  metal  guitar  riffs  and  drums  as  well  us  utilizing  some  melodic  leads  and  rhythms  and  setting  up  the  mood  for  the  screams  to  kick  in  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  switching  back  and  forth  between t he  soft  and  heavy  parts  as  well  as  the  bass  guitars  getting  more  powerful  and  the  song  also  utilizes  more  guitar  solos  as  time  goes  by.

  "Architect  Of  The  Void  Part  1"  begins  with  some  acoustic  guitars  which  utilize  both  finger  picking  and  full  chords  along  with  some  heavy  lead  and  rhythm  guitars  which  also  bring  in  some  drums  as  well  as  the  guitars  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  melody  in  both  of  the  riffs  and  solos  and  a  few  minutes  later  grim  sounding  and  high  pitched  black  metal s creams  become  a  part  of  the  song  and  a  few seconds  later  you  can  hear  some  spoken  word  parts  and  synths  being  utilized  briefly.

  "Refuge"  is  an  instrumental  folk  music  piece  which  uses  both  finger  picking  and  full  chords  as  well  as  serving  as  an  intro  to  the  next  song.

  "Architect  Of  The  Void  Part 2"  begins  with  some  acoustic  guitars  before  the  drums  and  melodic  guitar  leads  kick  in  then  going  into  blast  beats  and  fast,  primitive  and  melodic  guitar  riffing  which  leads  to  the  black  metal  and  the  song  going  more  into  a  mid  paced  direction  while  retaining  some  of  the  more  primal  elements  and  getting  fast  again  at  certain  times  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  music  stops  and  all  you  can  for  are  nature  sounds  before  the  acoustic  guitars  make  their  return  along  with  more  melodic  lead  guitars  that  lead  to  the  song  getting  heavy  again  along  with  the  use  of  whispers.

  Song  lyrics  cover  nature  and  philosophy,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  dark  sound  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Oak  Pantheon  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  post  black  metal  band  with  elements  of  folk  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Fear  Me"  and  "Architect  Of  The  Void  Part 2".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
