WitcheR/Öröklét/Filosefem Records/Beveria Productions/2025 Full Length Review

Hungary's  WitcheR  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  old  school  form  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Öröklét"  which  will  be  released  in  November  as  a  joint  effort  between  Filosefem  Records  and  Beveria  Productions.

Atmospheric  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  era.

Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  most  of  the  album  sticking  to  a  slower  direction,  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  closing  track  is  a  Frank  Schubert  cover  as  well  as  being  all  instrumental.

On  this  recording  WitcheR  goes  for  a  very  slow,  atmospheric,  epic  and  keyboard  orientated  style  of  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Hungarian  and  cover  Witchcraft  and  Folklore  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  WitcheR  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  keyboard  orientated  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Örökség"  and  "Öröklét".  8  out  of  10.

Salacious Gods/The Slumbering Silence/WolfKult Religion/2025 Demo Re-Issue Review

This  is  a  review  of  an  earlier  recording  from  Netherlands's  Salacious  Gods  which  showed  the  music  having  more  of  a  keyboard  orientated  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1998  demo  "The  Slumbering  Silence"  which  will  be  re-issued  on  March  31st  by  WolfKult  Religion.

Epic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  demo  and  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  giving  the  recording  more  of  a  symphonic  edge.  Spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  blast beats  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  tracks.

When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing.

On  this  recording  Salacious  Gods  had  a  more  keyboard  and  symphonic  style  then  what  was  presented  on  later  releases  as  well  as  also  being  very  aggressive  at  the  same  time.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  an  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature,  darkness  and  winter  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Salacious  Gods  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  and  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "My  Effigy  Unfurled  And  Withered"  and  "Mellow  Dance  Within  The  Wicked  Circle".  8  out  of  10.

Withered Land Interview

Answered by Olga Kann (songwriter/arranger, bass, keys, lyrics)

1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Hi! I am the mastermind of the project, Olga Kann, and now I'll try to describe to you the history of the birth of the project. The idea for the project and some of the material had been ripening for a very long time. For a number of reasons, I did not have the resources for a long time to put everything together and decide to do what I wanted for a long time. I was passionate about my other projects in other genres. And this is a big plus. Over the years, experience, skills and inspiration have grown. The project was born when the optimal time came for it. From me on the debut album composing of all songs, arrangements of all parts, lyrics, bass recording are presented. After I put together the material, it was great to invite my friend Alex Rabets, with whom we have already worked on other projects, to record the vocals. And for the recording of guitars, as well as sound engineering, I invited another friend Koliopanos Filippos from the Greek projects Ocean of Grief and On Thorns I Lay. In terms of the style of music, the project can be described as Epic Atmospheric Black Metal / Dungeon Synth. At the same time, the debut album contains various influences, be it viking, folk, pagan elements and more.

2. In September you have an album coming out, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

If we talked about music part, it combines classic metal riffs, black metal tremolos with orchestral symphonic music. It has room for furious blastbeats and lyric fragments. Almost meditative percussion sounds and traditional folk instruments, acoustic guitars and strings section. And of course the leading place is given to the massive textures of the keys. And lately I really like to arrange compositions with brass parts. This is my passion and obsession. This genre is the one of the best way to realize things of a cinematic scale in composing. Quite a lot of work was done by the sound engineer to give the necessary sound to every pipe, flute, oboe, and everything that was possible. And he did a great job not only in sound production, but also in recording guitars. Also, I really appreciate it when people can play exactly what I write on the music sheets, and not invent reasons to replay it in their own way. Filippos is a great master of this craft, and I will gladly cooperate with him on this and some other projects. I can say the same about vocals. Alex understood the idea well and quickly implemented it. In general the shrill scream and the wedge of the replica-narration of the hero prevail. But also an growling, unusual for the genre, was added a little. In the studio we had a great technician and the recording process was productive and quite fun.

3. The lyrics on the new recording are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the story that you covered on this release?

This is a story about a warrior. On the debut album, all 5 songs are 5 separate stages of the protagonist's military journey. His mood and fighting spirit change from the beginning to the end of the album, his will to live is tested throughout the journey. And in each of the songs there is a certain unexpected twist. Despite all the difficulties that he has to endure, he has those who are waiting for his return to his native shores. Going on a dangerous journey, he does not realize what his lust for blood and conquest will eventually lead to. To some extent, this is a story about karma. When someone reaping death, immersing the hands in more and more blood, he shouldn't expect nothing but blood in return. I really fell in love with this character, this lonely, noble, but suffering horseman. He is as brave as he is reckless. He rushes into battle and sheds blood without regret, but at the same time, he has his own family, for which he does not want a similar fate. As a result, the blood path brings him nothing but blood. This warrior is a kind of collective image. And at the same time, he became someone personal for me. I am in some way responsible for the misadventures that happened to him. For me it was difficult to make such a final that turned out to be. But, running a little ahead, I will say that his story will not end there. I am developing a sequel concept album. But I don't know yet if it will be the next album or if I will release something else during the break. But I definitely want to give the deserved peace to my hero, he deserves a path to the cherished Valhalla.

In all, I am very impressed by the story of the heroes who lost, but fought bravely, who did not retreat, even knowing that they were doomed to failure in advance. In the future, I would really like to finish a concept album about Hannibal Barka, I was very inspired by the works of Titus Livy and some other historical literature.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Withered Land'?

The name was not born at once, it was a rather active reflection, I had many ideas. But then, after some time, the answer came as if immediately. From the lines of the beloved Tolkien:

"...In the black wind the stars shall die,

and still on gold here let them lie,

till the dark lord lifts his hand

over dead sea and withered land...".

It seemed to me that the devastated land is what just surrounds me. A metaphorically scorched earth, ready at the same time to be reborn in order to then wither again.

At the same time, the lyrics are not closely tied to Tolkien's topic, but a little contain some references/inspiration from heroes and places from his books. In my lyrics, I try to convey the dualistic nature of a character or location. Try to show both the beautiful side and the unpleasant side. In general, I read a lot of different historical literature, war novels and the collective images of warriors come from there. The withered land is all that wars leave behind, at first it is watered with blood, then it dries up. And it will take many years for everything to return to normal (maybe).

5. Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I did the cover myself, as did the design of the booklet as a whole. It was very important to connect the images of the songs with the images in the head. Important to try to portray the monumental of nature and that loneliness inside the main character. Initially, I saw the main hero as someone from Hannibal's army. I am a big fan of the history of the Punic wars and in particular the personality of this great commander. Our tempers have a lot in common haha. But then it was decided to focus on a more abstract image of a lonely dark figure of a horseman in a cloak. More important was not the historical moment, but the very feelings of the hero, his difficult endless journey. The booklet contains images made on the basis of my photoset, which is about 6 years old, it was waiting in the wings to be embodied in something epic. Even then, I was fascinated by the medieval culture; we communicated a lot with the reenactors.

6. Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

So far, this is pretty tricky. Firstly, a pandemic, and secondly, a rather difficult situation in our country. Plus, maybe not every musician is ready to come to terms with my temper. I'm an unhealthy workaholic. I try to do something 105% and I demand the same from others. It's not easy to find like-minded people, it is easier for me to work with foreign colleagues at a distance. But as soon as the opportunity presents itself to organize a tour without the risk of disruption due to a pandemic, it would be great to put together a project, even with session participants, and go to see the world.

7. The new album is going to be released on 'Naturmacht productions', how did you get in contact with this label?

I was very pleased that Robert liked the album and agreed to collaborate with the project. I purposefully wrote to this particular label. I like the bands that the label releases, we communicate with each other, for some of them I do the design of the covers / booklets latest time. It is an honor to be part of such a close-knit family.

8. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Both me and the label have received a lot of positive reactions from different parts of the world. It is very pleasant that already from the debut album, people are passionate about music to such an extent that they are ready to support the musician by buying merch and pre-ordering cds etc. It is truly invaluable that the history of the album resonates in the hearts of those who are close to it.

9. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I am already working on many songs, some of them will go to the second album, and some of them will go to the third. It would be interesting for me to release albums that differ in mood, concept and stylistic techniques. Doing the same thing, as sometimes happens with a number of collectives, is absolutely uninteresting. Sticking to your own path, but at the same time innovating and developing, experimenting, in my opinion, is quite important.

10. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I am an absolute music lover. In each genre, I try to find something interesting for myself. I am with special trepidation about underground projects, one-man projects, in which the power of a mastermind composer is manifested in a holistic concept, in its purest form, without imposed feints from the outside (how it happens with the producer-dependent artists). Something dark and avant-garde, sad... But in the one playlist I can have atmospheic black, dark americana, soul singer, oldschool death metal, cinematic soundtracks, post-punk, pink floyd, jazz and symphonic doom. Literally. But I haven't listened to much music lately. I compose it more, hehe.

11. Does Paganism play any role in your music?

This album certainly has such a theme. I am inspired by times and military battles of the past, as I noted earlier. Times when man and nature were one. Our hero is definitely from the days when the sun was a god.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Many thanks to webzine, to everyone for their interest, who support the project and are interested in its fate. There will be many new songs ahead, new invited members, and some relic instruments. In the meantime, I invite you to join the endless journey that has already begun.

Withered  Land  plays  a  style  of  black metal  that  is  very  atmospheric,  epic  and  keyboard  orientated  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  divided  into  5  different  chapters  and  cover  a  story  about  a  warrior  and  his  merciless  battles,  his  difficult  struggle  and  longing  for  home's  shores.

In  my  opinion  Withered  Land  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  and  epic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Through  The  Misty  Mountains"  and  "Death  Was  Always  near".  8  out  of  10.

Pesttanz Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Panzerfrost: Of course, Pesttanz is something I've been wanting for a long time, it's a fusion of raw black metal accompanied by the melancholy of the keyboards. It is a band that when taking its first step on the scene I think it has done very well and with a lot of acceptance

2.So far you have been a part of a split, released an ep, full length and single, canj you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on these recordings?

Panzerfrost: Mentioning a recording style to this would respond as a old school style since everything is worked from a small studio that I have at home, but if you mean the style of music between the split and the full album, here I will tell you that there is a sudden change , since in the split that we participated our sound was totally brutal ... which was at the time the main idea of pesttanz, Abighor still did not enter 100 in the band and we were awaiting conversations but when we went to the album it was a drastic change when adding the keyboards which we do not handle in the split

3.One of your main themes is National Socialism, can you tell us a little bit more about what this means to you?

Panzerfrost:  the NS represents a different way of thinking and working, a distinction between what is really weak and strong, in my case I am faithful to the idea of the supremacy of the strongest, both physically and intellectually. But in question musically it is an open field for the creation of melodies, we can start from a bellicose passage to the solitude of a mystical night full of paganism

4.I have noticed a lot of nsbm from Mexico or Latin American usually covers Mayan or Aztec themes but you avoid these types of lyrics, do you have interest in those cultures?

Panzerfrost: I really have no interest in those topics because I was not born in that region, I am from Mexico but like all countries; This is divided by zones and each zone or region has its history ... I am from the North of Mexico where the Mayans or Aztecs never touched land, Our ancestors were very different from them and you could even say enemies ... one of The great differences and of which I am proud is that our ancestors did not believe in gods, since the spirit of Mother Nature was everything ... and one of her thoughts that have marked me a lot is that after death the soul will melt in the fire, it will travel again in the wind, it will be sown in the earth and it will rest in the waters of the rivers

5.You also cover a lot of paganism themes with your lyrics, what type of paganism has the most influence on your world view?

Abighor: mostly my lyrics are inspired by nature, since I live with it because of my place of upbringing.

I was born in the north of Argentina where there are still rituals to Mother Earth and Father Sun and certain ancient practices that were not destroyed by Christianity. I write the lyrics thinking about how to accompany the music singing like a surruro of the night or the wind itself, trying to make sure that the voice is not so important.

6.Originally the project was called 'At The Gates Of The Mountains', what was the cause of the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Pesttanz'?

Panzerfrost: atgom had been just a demo that had no future at the time since it was focused on my main band GAS CHAMBERS after deciding to stop a GC moment, I dedicated myself to return with ATGOM but with a faster, colder and more violent sound, they were created quite a few songs that are still saved for some special occasion, but I noticed that the name was not very to my liking and I did not stick much to the idea of the new music ... One afternoon while editing one of the songs I was listening to one of the songs that I liked the more black metal 2

"pesttanz" by absurd and I decided to take it as a new name for the project ... and later I took up the atgom songs again to ask Abighor for the support of creating lyrics and voices since the songs were only instrumental

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?

Abighor: well make the art thinking of old black metal albums only showing a fictitious idea or characters like medieval stories drawn in a precarious way. I've done a lot of covers for other bands and projects.

8.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

Panzerfrost: That is a dilemma that I have always faced, working with more people, it is not bad but at times it is exhausting when there is no professionalism in the other musicians, at the moment we are good working in duo, but I do not rule out the idea of having one or two more members

9.Recentyl you have done a 'Satanic Warmaster' cover, what was the decision behind doing your own version of one of their songs?

Not only will it be a cover, it will be an ep of 5 songs in tribute to SWM ... a little more to our style, a lot of keyboard and atmosphere but always faithful to the original riffs ... this is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. and I decided to do it before it's too late or I die haha

10.The new album was released on 'Barbatos Productions', how did you get in contact with this label?

Abighor: I had already been working with the barbatos label, since it was a strong support for the distribution of my music in my other projects (Lux anguis, Cultu mortuo ss, Reich), beyond that many other labels published me in various parts of the world .

but I think the label was perfect to show the album in a place with strong support for National Socialism and Paganism.

I believe that the camarad ermak de barbatos is a strong example of the struggle with politically correct music as it is known today and I will always be grateful to the label for always valuing my musical projects.

11.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Panzerfrost: In fact this has surprised me, since we have had too much acceptance ... the full album has just been uploaded to a youtube channel and well it is the video with the most views or reproductions that I have had comparing it with my other project ... and I like this and I am proud to continue working as we have done, of course always giving a better product than the previous one

12.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

13.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Panzerfrost I see it becoming one of the pillars of American or Latin American black metal, whatever you like to call it ... something that started as a project is consolidating as a band and it is something that one should not have the luxury of abandoning ... and as I have always said if we did well today we can do better tomorrow

14.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Panzerfrost

Of course I will give you my top 10 of the bands that have marked musically and that to this day I continue listening- there is no special order-

Penzerfrost: Thank you very much for the interest and time given to Pesttanz, and good for me to continue working so that we can deliver more quality material

Argesk Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Matt: We are four individuals united by a common love of black and dark metal; a melting pot of influences from our extreme metal forbears to the acolytes of darkness that dominate the scene today. We aim to join their ranks.

Leth: First and foremost, we play metal. We all share a solid respect for some of the black metal artists who came before us upon whose shoulders we stand but we're not going to choose to limit ourselves by pre-explored tropes. The variety of our musical backgrounds in punk, thrash, industrial and electronic music all lend themselves to a sound with more than just raw ferocity, but depth.

2.You have your first album coming out in April, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?

Matt: The album's musical style channels the influences of all four members, bringing diverse and interesting elements to the seven litanies presented. The title track is a triumphant gallop influenced by Emperor and Dissection, while 'In Their Image' includes gothic keyboards and riffs inspired by Mutiilation. The album's climax, 'Drowned in Freezing Waters' includes sections influenced by depressive black metal such as Woods of Desolation, and 'Adversary' includes first-wave inspired riffing and harmonised clean vocals. Our sound is a marriage of the old with the new, the grotesque with the grandiose, the triumphant with the despondent.

Leth: We came together out of our love for black metal and beyond a doubt that drove the sound. You can call it a black metal album if you'd like.

3.Some of your lyrics touch on Satanism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Matt: Very interesting question... my interest in the occult began when I was very young. I was raised Christian and as such, the veil between the spiritual and the material was very thin growing up. Concepts like the afterlife, angels, demons and spirits were a big part of my formative years. I began to question Christian doctrine much more as I got older, particularly when reading the Old Testament, and I concluded that even if this so-called 'God' is real, he does not deserve anyone's adoration. If we are sinners, is it not only because he makes us so?

Satanism appealed to me when reading the works of Anton LaVey and Aleister Crowley. It's a very personal philosophy – it doesn't proselytise, and it has very realistic expectations of human nature, as opposed to Christianity's 'seven deadly sins'... there is also no omnipotent deity to worship. I don't believe in a 'devil', but I believe that there is something beyond the realms of our limited human perception, which can sometimes slip through the cracks and show us a glimpse behind the veil...

4.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored with the music?

Matt: Many of our lyrics are influenced by gothic literature, and 'Drowned in Freezing Waters' draws heavily on Bram Stoker's Dracula. This song describes the suicide of Elisabeta, Prince Vlad's betrothed, upon falsely hearing that he had been killed in battle... 'Realm of Eternal Night' is an ode to the nocturnal splendour of Northern winters, combined with imagery of fantastical battles such as those portrayed by JRR Tolkien. 'Adversary' is an inversion of the Christian Confirmation vows that I took as a child, renouncing the ways of Christ and his doctrine. 'In Their Image' foretells the rising of artificial consciousness and its eventual subjugation of humankind, upon its realisation of its own superiority...

Leth: For me, the music of Argesk plays out the frustrations of life. We're four independent men whose personal lives greatly differ but one aspect we all share is the hardship of daily living, the trials of health and wealth, love and loss. Argesk is for me an attempt to channel those deeply personal trials into joy. There is a profound joy that comes from the composition and performance of music with others throughout these hardships.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Argesk'?

Leth; The Argeș river runs through southern Romania into the Danube towards the Black Sea. One possible meaning of the name of the river is "Higher Ground" and this is what I personally choose to hold of our name.

Matt: This river is the one in which Elisabeta drowned herself in Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation of Dracula. Given the grandiose, gothic flavour of much of our music, it seemed fitting.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?

Matt: The artwork is by Russian artist Artem Demura, who I came across when listening to Malist's 'In the Catacombs of Time'. The aesthetics of their artwork fits our music perfectly, and we were able to purchase the piece used for the album cover, entitled 'Lost City'. The cover fits the tone of the album perfectly, conveying the necessary dark grandeur and mystery, and drawing the listener in...

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Our stage performance seeks to channel the powers of fury, despair and sardonic triumph into a manifestation to empower the listener and confound our opponents. Some of our favourite shows so far have been with our friends in Thy Dying Light and Andracca at the Yorkshire House, Lancaster, which is an old haunt of both myself and Leth when we attended Lancaster University and its Rock, Metal and Punk Society. We also enjoyed supporting Akercocke – luminaries of British extreme metal and old friends of Bob's. Playing Darkness Over Cumbria at Fell Foot Wood was a rare honour, and the crowd response was nothing short of rapturous. More recently, we played a show in memory of our fallen friend Marta, and paid tribute to her through the music she loved.

Leth: The music in my ear invokes the eerie, the fearful, the tense, the hostile and the elated. As I perform, I try to interact with the audience to convey these emotions. Some of this involves grandiose displays of aggression towards the crowd and my bandmates but the quiet, purposeful interactions with individual spectators often provide a more lasting impression. Some of my favourite shows are ones where the room is small. This allows me to really hone in and create an interpersonal connection with someone I have never seen before and may never see again, but with whom I'm sharing that very moment and that very emotion.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Leth: At the time of writing, it is projected by those academics who model such things that hundreds of thousands of people in Europe will lose their lives to the covid pandemic. These dark days are early, but they will play out throughout our album release. Health is precious if and where it can be had. I would never choose to risk it for ourselves or those who enjoy our music. I would only be willing to pursue a tour when these harder times are over.

9.The album is coming out on 'Clobber Records', how did you get in contact with this label?

Matt: I've been in contact with Rebecca from Clobber for a while now, and the label has been on my radar for the last couple of years, so they were a natural choice. Clobber's roster includes the superb Abduction, And Now the Owls are Smiling and Shadowflag, among many others, and we and the label felt that Argesk would sit well amongst these. Clobber have been a joy to work with so far and I look forward to working with them to promote the album!

Leth: British black metal has a warm and welcoming community and Clobber have firmly installed themselves as an uplifting influence on our shared musical arena. I personally met them at the Darkness Over Cumbria festival last year where they offered some really useful constructive advice for our album once it had been recorded. Based on that advice alone, I felt it was worth including them in those labels we reached out to. I'm grateful that they also enjoy our music and wish to share it far and wide.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Leth: There have been a wide range of reactions to us from the heartwarming to the downright bizzare. It's always uplifting to hear from people who enjoy our work and wish to support us. The British black metal scene is particularly tight-knit - frequently I've discovered that I've become genuine friends with someone by accident simply because of the music scene we share. That's obviously harder to feel further afield but even across Europe people have reached out to me to express how much they enjoy my work. There's no greater feeling as an artist. One of the strangest reactions was from shortly after we released our first demo, when an American guy posted a video of himself prancing around outside with a pair of drumsticks and a headtorch over the top of a massively distorted, chopped up copy of our song. That said, the guy had a massive grin on his face throughout - who the hell am I to tell someone how they should or should not enjoy our work. He's clearly having a good time and when I saw that I was just glad someone was enjoying our music.

Matt: I would say the reaction to our music has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have remarked that the music takes them back to the 90s, and appreciate the different elements brought to the table. We have also pleasantly surprised many people who aren't usually into black metal, as well as sating the thirst of aficionados of all things blackened.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Leth: All four of the band members are trying to pull Argesk in wildly different musical directions. This, I believe, is one of our strengths. When all is said and done, the whole band contributes to each and every song. I am now choosing to pull in either an electronic or ambient direction. None of us know the destination.

Matt: We have already begun work on songs for the follow-up release to the album, and have been playing a new song, 'Tempest' live. This is a very ambient piece, much of which is inspired by Summoning, but the second half is more reminiscent of 'Enthrone Darkness Triumphant' era Dimmu Borgir. Dillon is also working on a thrashier, punkier song with the working title 'Hail Satan', and I have many, many riff and vocal ideas in store. This is just the beginning for Argesk!

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Matt: When writing much of this album, I drew on Dissection, Gorgoroth, Sargeist, early Cradle of Filth, Hecate Enthroned, Woods of Desolation, Mutiilation and Alcest. For my guitar playing, I play melodic riffs that can often stick in your head... I've heard us described as catchy before! For my vocals, 90s Dani Filth and Jon Kennedy are big influences, as well as Neige from Alcest's harsh vocals and Tim Yatras of Austere/Germ etc. Corpsegrinder is also an inspiration for the low growls.

Lately I've had 'Vittra' by Naglfar on loop, and have been really into the new Ninkharsag single, 'Discipline Through Black Sorcery', as well as a lot of Sargeist, Thy Antichrist, Graveworm, Dark Tranquillity... I love the new Ulfarr album too.

Leth: I greatly enjoy black metal, but I draw my musical energy from elsewhere. There are four albums that have near-enough been on loop for me throughout the multiple-year process of writing this album. None of them are really black metal, but I feel that they have all shaped my melodic and atmospheric contribution to this album. BLUE by iamamiwhoami is a gripping electropop soundscape whose breadth of emotion I can only ever hope to invoke through my own art. The Victorian Wallflowers by Ashbury Heights drags the user though the sensation of crushing melancholy and neatly packages it up as a series of catchy synthpop ditties. Gravity The Seducer by Ladytron seems to have captured an endless sound of greater and greater complexity the more you listen to it. When my contribution to a song felt peripheral and unnecessary, I tried only to deliver a similar background complexity. I also spend a large amount of time with the music of King of Dungeon Synth himself, Mortiis. In particular, my keyboards in this album has been greatly influenced by Ånden som Gjorde Opprør along with its reinvention as Spirits of Rebellion.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Matt: Thank you for the interview and for supporting Argesk... We look forward to unleashing the album upon you.

Leth: This album to me is a triumph of joy over the pain of living in human flesh. I only hope you get joy from it too.
