This is a review of an earlier recording from Netherlands's Salacious Gods which showed the music having more of a keyboard orientated style of black metal and this is a review of their 1998 demo "The Slumbering Silence" which will be re-issued on March 31st by WolfKult Religion.
Epic sounding keyboards start off the demo and also mix in with the heavier sections of the songs at times giving the recording more of a symphonic edge. Spoken word samples can also be heard briefly while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams and blast beats are also added into the faster sections of the tracks.
When tremolo picking is added into the faster riffing they also give the music more of a raw feeling while the riffs also add in a lot of melody. Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them, one song also adds in a brief use of clean playing.
On this recording Salacious Gods had a more keyboard and symphonic style then what was presented on later releases as well as also being very aggressive at the same time. The production sounds very raw an old school while the lyrics cover nature, darkness and winter themes.
In my opinion this was another great sounding recording from Salacious Gods and if you are a fan of old school and symphonic black metal, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "My Effigy Unfurled And Withered" and "Mellow Dance Within The Wicked Circle". 8 out of 10.
