1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1. We are Drôvich. A three piece Frisian black metal band from Dokkum and surroundings. We're bringing a unique new sound to the Frisian black metal scene by drawing influences from thrash and death metal among others.
We formed in the beginning of 2022 and played our first gig in December 2022.
2.Recnetly you have released a full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?
2. Our debut album is a hard-hitting blend of different styles of black metal. We chose to play a broad blend from thrash and even some hardcore and crust influences to 90's black metal and from modern death metal to atmospheric and melodic black metal.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?
3. Lyrically we're also using quite broad themes. The things all lyrics have in common though are the language: all our lyrics are Frisian and focus: they all call unto the negative emotions. Some through stories, true or fictional, others through dark experiences like depression or the difficulties of personal development.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Drôvich'?
4. Drôvich is Frisian and can be translated to "sad" or "mournful". With our music we bring you the opportunity to live through all the negativity and darkness together. Our name reflects on that.
5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
5. The landscape is based on the Frisian landscape. Its beautiful countryside is diverse, but nicely summarized by the artist Fred Rinsma. The storm above represents our Frisian black metal storm. The tree is a very important symbol to us, you can find it in all previous artworks as well. The tree has many branches, which grow out into our logo. Beyond that, the tree is life and connects life. The death of the tree means the end, which "Ein Fan'e Tiid" is about. Lastly to add to that note, there are two dead bodies to lay extra focus on the ending of their time. The main character looking directly at the viewer represents all dark emotions that flow through this album in his face. Absolute mourn, depression, rage and despair are carefully drawn into one expression, looking you right in the eye.
6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
6. We've played a lot of amazing shows, but if we had to choose a few, we'd say our shows at Aaipop, a Frisian music festival where we played a long set for almost 1000 people; at the metal battle in Iduna and when we played as the opening act to Pestilence, which was very cool.
Our stage performance has very high energy, we try to make the black metal storm really come true and get the crowds moving. We love to receive energy from the audience and will do anything in our power to give them our best.
7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
. We have a big release show we're organising ourselves on March 21st. We've got a few more lined up, but we can't say a whole lot about that yet. Follow our socials to stay up to date!
8.The new album was released on 'Doc Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
8. Doc records is part of the group Doc Holliday Metal Productions. It's an underground Dutch death and black metal label that releases and distributes records throughout Europe. Previous releases include those from Sammath, Humanity Delete, Procreation and Frontline Despair.
9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?
9. We're still on a small level, but we have heard nothing but amazing reactions from across the world. The US and Canada, South America and most of Europe include people who have listened to our music and really dig it, which is just awesome to hear.
10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
10. Our strength is in the broadness of genres and musical styles, while still containing the black metal sound. We'll stick to this, but will broaden the blend even further in different directions. Maybe we'll use some more death metal or even a little prog influence, give into a more melodic and folky sound and of course not discard the bled we already established here.
11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
11. We all have different backgrounds and listen to a lot of different music. Bands that influence our sound most are probably Taake, Marduk, but mostly it comes from us. Geale (guitarist and lead vocalist) listens to a lot of black metal, but also styles like country and rock 'n roll. Mike (bassist) listens to all kinds of styles ranging from funk to jazz fusion and blues rock to punk. Max (drummer) is an absolute proghead with his favourite bands being Dream Theater and Rush. These different tastes with the big overlap of thrash, death and black metal gives us our sound.
12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
12. Thank you! We'd like to give everyone the experience of the dark emotional journey and really encourage you to feel the album. Look up, feel the sun, be guided. We hope you enjoy!
