Malum Mortem are a solo project from Italy that plays a very depressive form of black metal and this is a review of his 2025 compilation album "Black Mass Prayers" which will be released in April by Black Mass Prayers.
Clean playing starts off the album before going into a heavier direction while the vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style and one track is also very long and epic in length.
A lot of the music is more heavily rooted in the mid 2000's era of the genre while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which gives the compilation more of a raw feeling. Whispers can also be heard briefly along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them. Acoustic guitars and clean singing can also be heard on a couple of tracks and spoken words are also added towards the end.
Malum Mortem plays a style of depressive black metal that goes back to the classic era of the genre, The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover melancholy and despair themes.
In my opinion Malum Mortem are a very great sounding depressive black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Awaiting For My Death" "The Rising Of Darkness" and "Unpunished". 8 out of 10.
