Cancer/Opioid/2020 CD Review

Australia's  Cancer  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  depressive  style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2020  album  "Opioid"  which  will  be  released  in  August.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and r aw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  At  times  the  vocals  also  get  very deep  sounding  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

One  song  also  introduces  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording  along  with  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of old  school  and  modern  influences,  the  closing  track  is  also  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  19th  century  English  essayist  and  pioneer  of  addiction  literature,  Thomas  De  Quincy.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Cancer  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Dreamer"  "The  Depths  III  -  The  Dames  Of  Affliction"  and  "The  Depths  VI  -  In  Memorium".   8  out  of  10.

Cancer/Into The Heartless Silence/Throats Productions/2018 CD Review

Cancer  are  a  band  from  Australia  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Into  The  Heartless  Silence"  which  will  be  released  on  July  28th  by  Throats  Productions.

Drum  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  takes  the  music  into  a  heavier  direction  along  with  the  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  music  also  gets  very  dissonant  and  technical  at  times  along  with  the  tracks  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Clean  vocals    can  also  be  heard  at  times  on  a  few  tracks  while  guitar  solos  and  leads  are    done  in  a  very  modern  atmospheric  style  when  they  are  utilized  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  recording, on  the  second  half  of  the  album  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

Cancer  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  and  depressive style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  release  while  showing  a  great  amount  of  progress  as  musicians,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  depressive  and  mythological  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Cancer  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ad  Nauseam"  "Apherisis"  and  "Abacination".  8  out  of  10.

Cancer/Terminal/2016 EP Review

Cancer  are  a  band  from  Australia  that  plays  a  very  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2016  ep  "Terminal".

Atmospheric  synths  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  introduces  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  melodic  guitar  leads  onto  the  recording  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  decent  amount  of  melody and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  vocals  getting  more  grim  at  times.

During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  elements  of  post  black  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  songs and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  melodic  vocals.

Cancer  plays  a  style  of  depressive  black  metal  that  also  has  its  raw,  atmospheric  and  melodic  moments  while  also  having  a  modern  take  on  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

In  my  opinion  Cancer  are  a  very  great  sounding  depressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Distant  Dreams"  and  "To  Taste  Your  Contempt".
