Antiquus Scriptum/Sluagh-Ghairm(Ou uma Elegia aos Celtas)/2026 EP Review

Portugal's  solo  project  Antiquus  Scriptum  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  moving  way  from  the  black  and  thrash  metal  elements  of  previous  releases  and  goes  for  a  mixture  of  dark  ambient  and  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2026  ep  "Sluagh-Ghairm(Ou  uma  Elegia  aos  Celtas)".

Celtic  folk  instruments  and  percussion  start  off  the  album  while  the  synths  also  add  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  dungeon  synths.  Female  vocals  and  field  recordings  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  soundtrack  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Nature  sounds  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  a  lot  of  the  songs  also  stick  to  more  of  an  instrumental  direction.  A  lot  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other,  samples  and  sound  effects  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  the  album  also  adds  in  some  Emperor  and  Marduk  covers.

On  this  recording  Antiquus  Scriptum  move  away  from  the  more  extreme  side  of  metal  and  goes  for  a  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  dungeon  and  folk  music  which  is  different  from  different  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  the  Celtic  People  and  tribes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Antiquus  Scriptum  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark  ambient,  dungeon  synth  and  folk  music,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Os  Guerreiros  de  Camelot "  "A  Lenda  de  Cú  Chulainn"  "A  Saga  de  Mabinogion"  and  "Echoes  From  The  Past".  8  out  of  10.

Antiquus Scriptum 2025 Interview

1. Hi, Sacerdos Magus. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the musical project since the recording and release of the new album?

Sacerdos Magus - Hi, John. Great to be part of Thy Occult Black Metal Zine, brother! Well... since the release of the "Toxic Waste" album, we've been working on a new original album, that's "The Garden of Earthly Delights", that will be the successor of "Toxic Waste", next year and that's almost written and ready to go to studio, but we've made a pause on this record, because we will record 1st, a tribute album, only with classics of death metal, that will be, "Into the Realms of Death (Tribute Album)", with cover songs of great names of the Death Metal scene, only. Besides that, we've released a few days ago, another ambiental/folk Ep, that's, "Patria Antiqua II" and these are the presents days of Antiquus Scriptum.

2. In 2025, you have released a great amount of material, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical direction you went for with the newer albums?

Sacerdos Magus - Yes, since 2022, we've changed a little our musical direction, due some health problems that I have (tendonitis) and as I had to stop playing the guitar and all the instruments to write and record the songs, I started to invite guest musicians to record the musical work and I have stayed only on the lyrical and vocal part of the job. The music we make, actually, has been changing, as well, from work to work, from the distant pagan black metal, from the past, to a more thrash metal, hardcore and even death metal styles influence, but that's no worry for us, we like the actual sound a lot!

3. The new album was more of an 80's thrash metal/crossover style and all the other material I have listened to over the years had more of a black metal direction. Can you tell us a little bit more about going into a different direction, musically?

Sacerdos Magus - Yes, we used to make black metal, for over 20 years, between 1998 & 2019, but, to be honest, I'm a little tired of the whole black metal scene and I think the black metal has entered into a deep decadence, nowadays and it's no more, what it was in the golden 90's era... I'm very pround of the 1st 6 records of the project, sounding pagan black metal/folk, but I decided to change the course of the band to another prespective, just like, perhaps, bands like Darkthrone, did, moving from traditional black metal sound, into punk, thrash & death metal, with the passing years. Like I said, already, it's not me whom's making the music, in the presente days, for the project and that’s another think that influence the whole change on musicality.

4. On the new album, you also incorporated a lot of elements that where never to be found on an 80's thrash metal album. Where you working on updating the genre for the modern era and take thrash metal into a different direction?

Sacerdos Magus - Yes, despite of playing now with lots of thrash metal influences, from the 80's, actually, it's not only thrash metal that's present in the actual sonority of the project, but other genres, as well, as hardcore, death metal, or even deathcore and trap metal, a new metal genre, very industrial and heavy, that mixes metal with electronic music, rap and all that stuff, that recently came abord and I decided to use in the new works. Of course that it brings a new shape, to the sound of the project and yes, it would be never possible to hear it in a thrash metal album from the 80's, but I don't pretend to play thrash metal, exclusively, in the actual works of my band. Was not a change, from black metal, to thrash metal, or nothing like that... we're influenced by many metal genres, in the actual sound.

5. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the new album?

Sacerdos Magus - Lyrics has changed, significantly, as well, in the new works and changed from a more "pagan" vein, with ancient history, mithology and ancient tales, from the black metal from the past, into a new lyricist domain, with more "modern" themes, as existence, itself, in this planet, the Human condition, inner struggles, wars, religion, social issues, politics, corruption, lies, hypocrisy and all that stuff, more related to thrash metal and hardcore. The lyric aspect had to be changed, with the new sonority, that's why I now write about most modern matters.

6. Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Sacerdos Magus - The "Toxic Waste" cover art, it's all about what can be found inside the record and I'm very glad with it! It appear to be an thrash metal/hardcore cover, from the 80's, that are the main influences, now, for our music. It stands, itself, for modern problems that haunt the actual societies, as death, pollution, corruprion, greed, or fear... It fits just fine for this record, in my opinion.

7. On the new album you also did a S.O.D. and a D.R.I. covers. What was the decision behind doing your own version of their songs?

Sacerdos Magus - Well, this album, "Toxic Waste", has many old hardcore/crossover influences in it, it is the most hardcore work that we made, since the beginning and makes all the sense to cover S.O.D. & D.R.I., because that maybe the most important bands (Institutions) of this genres, in all history! Beside that, I really like S.O.D. & D.R.I. and was a pleasure for me to cover their songs, as an homage to them.

8. The new album was self released. Are you open to working with another label again in the future?

Sacerdos Magus - I really don't know, mate... It can happen, more for a re-release of an old album, or so, more than a new work, for sure... In the present times, I made the decision of only release my works in digital format, because of some issues with the physical works, but I don't mind at all to release only digital and I'm fine with that. Maybe a re-edition, or so, maybe... I don't know...

9. On a worldwide level, how have fans reacted to your new musical direction?

Sacerdos Magus - Well, there was a couple of folks, of course, somehow disappointed with the new musical direction of the project, but the majority, reacted fine, because it's not the 1st time that a band changes its musical course, I gave you the example of Darkthrone, but there are many more... I think, what's funny about music, is do whatever we want and create different spectres of musicality, during the years we are into it... I don't condemn bands as Manowar, Iron Maiden, or Saxon, or Judas Priest, for example, that are faithful to the sound they made in the beginning of their bands, until today, if they want to do it, fine, but, most of the times, in major part of the times, we see bands change their musical course for different spectres of musicality, during the years and that's is fine, I think...

10. Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician, during the future?

Sacerdos Magus - Well... with the tendonitis, I can't play again any instrument, but since I have voice and imagination to write, I will continue, of course, because I have the great support of my friend and producer, Paulo Vieira (Paulão), that gives me all the support I need to handle the project alive. Other friends, too, of course, but until I work with Paulão, all will be fine, for many years, yet!... My will to make music, is inexhaustible, there's no doubt about that, since I have health and the conditions to hold on, will do it, of course!

11. What are some of the bands, or musical styles, you are currently listening to nowadays?

Sacerdos Magus - I listen many things, always... Now, I'm listening more old death metal, from the late 80's, early 90's, because of the death metal tribute we are recording, but I still listening much black metal, as always, especially old stuff, as well... many thrash metal, being old, or even new, I like it, as well... and other days, I like to hear ambiental music, folklore and ethnic music, Gregorian chants, whatever... and sometimes, I'm more inclined to listen to some pop/rock of the 80's & 90's, that I like much, as well… I don't know... Classical music, electronic music, or punk & hardcore, I like so many things... I'm very open minded, musically and I can hear so many things, in just one week.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Sacerdos Magus - Yes, I would like to ask all those whom are reading this interview and that like metal, to be united and don't arm or injure anyone and to be kind and affable with all the others. Hate and disrespect, will only bring poison to our minds, so, be serene, relating the others and respect your fellow man, as you like to be respected! Help out the bands you like, as well and keep fighting to heavy metal never dies! Thank to you, John, for more this opportunity and all the readers of Occult Black Metal Zine. Best regards and please Keep Metal Alive!!! Cheers!

Antiquus Scriptum Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the musical project these days?

. Hi! Thanx so much for the opportunity. Right now I'm recording already the forthcoming album of Antiquus Scriptum, that shall be named: "Imaginarium". It's the 5th original album and the 6th full-length album of the project since 1998.

2. So far this year you have released a compilation and also have been a part of a split, how would you describe the musical sound of the newer material and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

. The music is always evoluting from work to work, of course, Antiquus Scriptum is no different. Much things change from album to album, further technical aspects, but the important is to hold the identity, or the gem of the project through the years, but I think that despite some technical details, there are always changing from album to album, the music of Antiquus Scriptum doesn't differ much from the early days due its own personality... That's what I honestly think...

3. Over the years you have also released a great amount of compilation's, can you tell us a little bit more about it?

. Yeah, the fact is that I'm not weird when it comes to issues, by the contrary, I'm always searching for more and more releases, no matter the drafts, type or format. Much of these compilations are in Pro CDr editions, very limited most of them, but it's ok for me, since I just want to release more and more stuff of my project, actually.

4. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your newer music?

. Antiquus Scriptum is mainly influenced by ancient history, mythology, old tales and stuff, but some themes are consisted in a more 'modern' points of views and talk about modern things as well... Each theme is a theme and I don't only talk about history all the time and I don't talk about social criticism all the time as too... I try to connect these both, amongst other matters, depending on the theme I'm writing. Some themes are historical, some are interventional, some are romantic, some are more 'Black Metal', others more Thrash... It depends...

5. You have covered Lustinian Heritage and Mythology in your lyrics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in your own heritage?

. Well, I'm a Lusitanian Warrior, I shall tell my own history!... Not new, everybody does... Each people with their roots and heritages. First of all I really love ancient history, mythology, old tales and all related with antiquity, the own name of the band shows that, so I enjoy to talk about my own ancestors and homeland, despite to have themes that are focused in other cultures, as the Roman Empire, the Vikings, biblical aspects, etc, etc etc... I think that it is a little fashionable nowadays in terms of Pagan Black Metal wordwide to talk about our own cultures and history... I like that, a little Folklore and mythology as well... But I have no problem to write about any culture or nation, since related with antiquity, worldwide.

6. On the albums you record everything by yourself, are you open to bringing other musicians onto the albums or do you prefer to remain solo?

. Yes, Antiquus scriptum is and will always be my solo project... I have always guest musicians on the records, as the Vieira brothers that participate in almost all the recordings, plus new folks I occasionally meet, is always happening, but their participations are always as guests musicians and the project always remains my solo project, ever.

7. You have done live shows with this project before, what are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

. Antiquus Scriptum just played live once in 1999 in Almada, with the very first formation when it was considered a band, but there's the very first phase of the project and it's far from what I've done alone through the years, after I choose the one-man-band path... Live performances ate not my type, that's part of the past... Antiquus Scriptum is mostly influenced by projects as Bathory, Burzum or Darkthrone, that doesn't play live ever and I like this way.

8. Do you have any plans for shows in the future?

. Sorry, but no.

9. Recently you where a part of a split with 'Astarium', what are your thoughts on the other project that had participated on the recording?

. Astarium is a very good Russian Symphonic / Pagan Black Metal / Ambient project and SiN, is a very talented and nice guy! I respect him so much for his course with Astarium and I think he respect Antiquus Scriptum equally. I really love his stuff and the Ambiental Split just happened occasionally, since the label that have released it is of his own, NitroAtmosphericum Records...

10. On the split you had done a Satyricon cover, what was the decision behind doing your own version of one of their songs?

. First of all I really love (early) Satyricon and "I En Svart Kiste" is such a beautiful and epic keyboard theme! Makes all the sense to cover it, it's really an ex-libris of old school Black Metal golden years! In fact, I was needing an outro keyboard theme to close my tribute album, "Recovering The Throne...", back in 2014, so I asked to my great friend Ricardo Vieira, a very talented musician and friend of mine that participate for many years in the band, that covered me "I En Svart Kiste" of satyricon, so he did and very alike, that's it... I really love that song, I feel chills every time I listen to it, no matter how many Winters have passed since then...

11. The compilation was partially released by Pesttanz Klangschmiede, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

. Yes, Pesttanz Klangschmiede is my official label since early 2013, despite I have always others issues by different labels at the same time... Pesttanz Klangschmiede (and Vegvisir Distribution), are very good labels and I just have to speak well of them, of course, they unleashed all my discography of 5 albums, all 1.100 copies each one and they have been very professional and fair until now, nothing to blame, it's been great!

12. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and pagan metal?

. Fortunatly, Antiquus Scriptum is mostly well received everywhere for the folks whom enjoy this type of music, I am fortunatly always receiving messages from interest folks around the world with nice words about my project and that's very, very good! Much respect everyone, Strengh & Honor! For such a small Portuguese band that even doesn't play live, I have a very nice feedback, indeed!

13. What is going on with your other musical projects these days?

. No musical projects beside Antiquus Scriptum, no, no... I have no time. Antiquus Scriptum takes 100% of my free time!

14. Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?

. Huumm... Nice question... Well, I see myself as an Underground musician in the future, just like I was in the past, actually... Things here in Portugal are not easy at all, and Heavy Metal music is almost a taboo for the society in general... Only Moonspell have achieved a real nice international landing in almost 30 years of Underground, here... Music here is nothing but an hobby, almost secret sometimes, that we carry passionately through the years, not for living as in Norway or Sweden...

15. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

. In terms of Metal I listen to everything that is old school, but mostly 80's & 90's... Heavy Metal, Thrash, Death, Doom, Black, I like everything and I listen to everything regularly, despite the most important influences I use in Antiquus Scriptum is Black Metal, of course, Thrash & Folk. But in music in general I like lots of stuff, ambiental stuff, classical music, chants, etc... I'm very opened minded in terms of music and I get influenced by many things through the years, despite I have a firm convicted path for the project...

16. What are some of your non musical interests?

. Women... eheh, just joking :) I like to read a lot, some epic movies, walk on nature, forests, mountains... But even all this is related with music and music is, definitely, the most important thing on my life!

17. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

. Well, thanx so much to thy Occult Black Metal Zine for this opportunity and for the folks in general, I just want to ask to you please support your local bands on the acquiring of their merchandising, go to live concerts and use Mp3 just to listen on the street, but please buy their original stuff. Thanx so much, see you :)

Antiquus Scriptum/...Outrora, Quando, as Aguas Choravam.../Negra Nit Distro/Pesttanz Klangschmiede/2016 Double CD Review

Antiquus  Scriptum  are  a  band  from  Portugal  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black.  pagan  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  double  2016  album  "...Outrora,  Quando,  as  Aguas  Choravam...'  which  was  released  a  joint  effort  between  Negra  Nit  Distro  and  Pesttanz  Klangschmiede.

A  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  compilation  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  along  with  some  atmospheric  elements  a  few  seconds  later  that  also  leads  to  more  of  a  mid  paced  direction  as  well  as  adding  in  angry  black  metal  screams  onto  the  recording  and  a  lot  of  the  songs  also  bring  back  the  90's  styles  of  the  raw, atmospheric,  symphonic  and  pagan  styles  of  black  metal  and  there  are  also  a  couple  of  brief  instrumental  tracks  and   clean  pagan  vocals  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  compilation  and  when  synths  are  utilized  they  are  very  atmospheric  and  epic  sounding.

The  riffs  can  also  be  very  melodic at  times  and  when  flutes  along  with  a  brief  use  of  bag  pipes  are  added  onto  the  recording  they  give  the  songs  more  of  a  medieval  folk  music  feeling  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  a    good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  Gregorian  chants  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while on  some  tracks  the  vocals  have  more  of  an  angry  shouting  approach  as well  as a  brief  use  of  growls  which  also  add  in  a  touch  of  death  metal  along  with  elements  of  thrash  being  added  into  the  riffing  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,.

Some  tracks  bring  in  violins  and  more  of  a  symphonic  style  along  and  there  are  also  female  vocals  being  utilized  at  times  and  some songs also  add  in  classical  and  acoustic  guitars  and  as  the  compilation  progresses  back  up  war  chants  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  music  gets  more  diverse  witch  each  song  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a very  melodic  fashion  and  samples  from  medieval  or  fantasy  films  are  also  added  on  certain  songs  and  on  the  second  cd  the  music  starts  incorporating  more  tribal  and  shamanistic  elements  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  choirs  on  on  song.

Antiquus  Scriptum  plays  a  style  of  pagan  black  metal  that  is  very  epic  and  heavy  while  also  having  its  atmospheric  and  symphonic  moments,  the  production  can range  anywhere  from  raw  to  professional since  a  lot  of  the  tracks  where  recorded  over  the  years,  while  the  lyrics  cover  bygone  times,  Ancient  History,  Iniquity  and  Existence  themes.

In  my  opinion  Antiquus  Scriptum  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  pagan/black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out this  compilation. RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Procenium  A  Viking  Belief"  "Thy  Visionary"  "Remember  Me  As  King"  and  "In  The  Kingdom  Of  Superstition".  8/5  out  of  10.
