Portugal's solo project Antiquus Scriptum has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for a mixture of black, viking, pagan and thrash metal with some symphonic and folk music elements and this is a review of his 2022 ep "Magnis Tenebris Obscuratum" which was released by Vegvisir Distribution.
Battle sounds and an Enslaved cover start off the ep along with some keyboards a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Symphonic elements can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style.
Death metal growls can also be heard at times while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody. The vocals are also done in mostly a first wave black metal style along with some of the back up shouts of thrash metal and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard.
Spoken word parts are also utilized briefly along with all of the musical instruments on the recording also having a very powerful sound to them. The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the tremolo picking also giving the music more of a raw black metal feeling when they are utilized.
As the ep progresses Amorphis and Dissection covers can be heard which are also instrumentals and introduce piano's into the music, clean vocals are also used briefly as well as the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style when they are utilized. Clean playing can also be heard briefly and as the ep progresses touches of folk music can also be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover bygone times, ancient history, mythology, religion, inner struggles and existence themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Antiquus Scriptum and if you are a fan of black, pagan, viking and thrash metal with some symphonic and folk music elements, you should check out this ep.
