France's Deathspell Omega have returned with a new recording which continues the avant garde and dissonant style of black metal from their previous releases and this is a review of their 2022 album "The long Defeat" which was released by Norma Evangelium Diaboli.
Throat singing and tribal style beats start off the album before going into more of a heavier yet dissonant direction. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing and all of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Angry shouts are also utilized at times while the vocals also add in a great amount of grim sounding black metal screams. The songs also have their technical and avant garde moments along with some synths and soundscapes also being added onto the album briefly which also takes the music into more of an experimental direction.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard along with the tremolo picking also giving the songs more of a raw feeling when they are utilized. When guitar solos and leads are introduced into the music they are done in a very dark, melodic and chaotic style as well as the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover 5three different storylines told through three different mediums.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Deathspell Omega and if you are a fan of this band, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Long Defeat" and ""Our Life Is Your Death". 8 out of 10.
