North are a band from Poland that has a history over 30 years and on this recording played a pagan form of black metal and this is a review of their 1995 album "Thorns Of The Black Rose" which will be re-issued by Black Death Production.
A very fast and raw sound start off the album along with a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking. Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams along with all of the musical instruments on the recording also having a very powerful sound to them and the songs are also very heavily influenced by the early 90's era that they where a part of.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while some of songs also introduces clean playing onto the recording. A couple of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with all of the heavier riffing being mostly done on power chords except for the last song which also showed a little bit of melody which also takes the music into more of a rawer direction as well as a couple of songs also adding in a brief use of spoken word parts.
On this recording North played a style of pagan black metal that was more raw and aggressive then most of the bands that where from their home country. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Paganism, Darkness, War and Battle themes.
In my opinion North where a very great sounding raw pagan black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Heretic Kingdom" "December Thoughts" and "In The Circle of Kings". 8 out of 10.
