Haxenzijrkell are a band from Germany that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a very raw and resolute form of black metal and this is a review of their 2022 album "Urgrund" which will be released in April by Amor Fati Productions.
Dark sounding synths start off the album while spoken word parts and can also be heard briefly before introducing in some drum beats and heavier riffing. All of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them.
Vocals are mostly high pitched yet tortured sounding black metal screams while the music also captures a very melancholic, sinister and hypnotic atmosphere. The first couple of tracks stick to a slower musical direction which also sounds very haunting at the same time and when the music finally speeds up on the closing song a small amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the music more of a raw feeling, spoken word parts and dark soundscapes also make a return on certain sections of the recording.
On this album Haxenzijrkell plays a style of black metal that is mostly slow, epic and raw sounding. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in German cover the mysteries of beyond and the boundless void.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Haxenzijrkell and if you are a fan of raw and epic black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Der Pfad der Finsternis". 8 out of 10
