Svalinn's Rift are a band from Hungary that plays a very raw and old school form of viking black metal and this is a review of their self released 2022 ep "Unpenitent Era".
A very hard and heavy sound starts off the ep along with some grim black metal screams a few seconds later. Most of the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave era while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them and the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody.
Growls can also be heard briefly while the songs also add in a great amount of viking and pagan metal elements. Whispered vocals can also be heard briefly along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style along with most of the music also sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction and as the ep progresses a small amount of fast playing and blast beats can also be heard, acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly and spoken word parts and clean playing are also added on the closing song.
Svalinn's Rift plays a style of viking black metal that is very raw sounding and heavily rooted in the mid 90's era. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Norse Mythology and Viking Battles.
In my opinion Svalinn's Rift are a very great sounding raw and old school viking black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ice Waves And The Primordial Giant" and "Forgotten Feelings From Runes". 8 out of 10.
