Mornai are a solo project from France that plays a very raw and melancholic form of black metal and this is a review of his 2022 demo "Haine Canalisée" which was released as a joint effort between Ancient Culte and Asylum Tenebris.
A very dark yet heavy sound starts off the demo along with some angry sounding black metal screams a few seconds later which also have a semi melodic tone to them at times. Classical guitars and clean playing can also be heard at times while melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
When tremolo picking is utilized they also give the songs more of a raw feeling while the music also shows a lot of influence from the early 2000's era. At times the vocals also add in some depressive touches along with some spoken word parts also being utilized briefly as well as some clean singing also being introduced on one of the songs. a couple of songs also adds in a small amount of keyboards into the background and all of the music sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction.
Mornai plays a style of black metal that is very slow, raw and melancholic sounding. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in French and cover melancholy, suffering and misanthropy themes.
In my opinion Mornai are a very great sounding slow, raw and melancholic black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Conte à rebours" and "Haine Canalisée". 8 out of 10.
