Carpe Noctem/Vitrun/Code666/2018 CD Review

  Carpe  Noctem  are  a  band  from  Iceland  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  dissonant  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review of  their  2018  album  "Vitrun"  which  will  be  released in  October  by  Code666.

Dissonant  sounding  guitar  leads  and  guitar  riffs  start  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  go  for  more  of  a  deeper  style  of  black  metal along  with  the  faster  sections  of t he  songs  also  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more of  a  raw  feeling.

  At  times  the  music  gets  very  progressive  and  technical  while  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  at  times  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length, experimental  and  avant  garde  sounds  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Elements  of  death  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  they also  bring  in  an  instrumental  track.

  On  this  recording  Carpe  Noctem  move  way  from  the  viking.black metal  style  of t heir  earlier  material  and  goes  into  more  of  a  modern  and  dissonant  style  of  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Icelandic  and  cover  Norse  Myths,  Occult  Scriptures  and  Black  Magick  Rituals.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Carpe  Noctem  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dissonant  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Songurrin  Sem  Omar  A  Milli  Stjarnanna"  and  "Her  Hvillr  Bolvun".  8  out  of  10.

Carpe Noctem/Self Titled/2009 EP Review

  Carpe  Noctem  are  a  band  from  Iceland  that  plays  a  very  straight  forward  form  of  black/viking  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  and  self  titled  2009  ep.

  'Vargsfaeding"  starts  off  with  some  dark  sound  of  natures  until  the  powerful  drum  blast  beats,  fast  primitive  black  metal  riffs  kick  in  as  well  as  the  bass  guitars  and  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  which  also  utilize  some  growls  and  you  clean  hear  some  melody  coming  out  of  the  guitar  rhythms  before  switching  back  and  forth  between  heavy  and  clean  playing  which  in  return  leads  to  the  slow  and  fast  heavy  parts  kicking  back  in  and  closing  the  song  in  a  grim  black  metal  direction.

  "Jotonborin"  starts  of  with  some  powerful  drumming,  raw  Norwegian  style  black  metal  guitar  riffs  which  set  up  the  pace  for  the  grim  screams  and  heavy  melodies  coming  out  of  the  riffing  while  also  mixing  in  some  mid  paced  parts  which  make  the  song  have  a  heavier  feeling  along  with  a  brief  use  of  deep  growls  and  then t he  blast  beats  and  faster  riffs  make  their  return  as  well  as  the  switch  back  and  forth  between  mid  paced  and  fast.

  "Metamorphoses  Maleficarum"  starts  off  with  a  spoken  word  ritual  and  then  the  drums,  bass  guitars  and  primitive  but  fast  black  metal  riffs  kick  in  which  sets  up  the  pace  for  the  deep  growls  and  grim  screams  along  with  some  blast  beats  before  going  into  a  more  mid  paced  direction  for  awhile  before  heading  into  some  black/thrash  metal  style  riffs  which  also  use  melody,  death  and  doom  metal  elements,  then  the  song  goes  back  to  its  more  traditional  black  metal  beginnings  while  also  combining  the  slow  doom  riffing  into  the  primitive  parts,  as  the  song  moves  in  the  song  introduces  some  clean  playing  and  then  the  spoken  word  parts  make  their  return  before  it  turns  into  screams  which  also  set  up  the  pace  for  the  mid  paced  drums  and  melodic  black  metal  riffs  which  in  return  get  faster  and  the  drums  start  hitting  the  blast  beats,  slowly  after  that t he  bass  kicks  in  and  the  music  gets  slower  but  darker  before  closing  the  song  with  primitive  black  metal  riffs  and  blast  beats.

  "Skalholtsbrenna"  starts  off  clean  until  the  drums  and  primitive  black  metal  riffs  kick  in  setting  up  the  pace  for  the  blast  beats  and  screams  before  going  into  a  more  mid  paced  and  melodic  direction  while  also  switching  back  and  forth  to  fast  and  mid  paced  for  awhile  until  around  the  3  minute  mark  the  music  is  all  guitar  amplifier  reverb  and  distortion  along  with  some  percussion  work  which  leads  to  the  song  going  into  a  more  heavy  and  slow  direction  when  the  guitar  riffing  returns  along  with  some  deeper  black  metal  vocals  which  leads  up  to  some  mid  paced  and melodic  riffs  coming  in  and  then  the  drums  start  speeding  up  and  the  song  closing  in  a  more  dark  and  old  school  black  metal  direction.

  Lyrics  on  the  ep  are  written  in  their  native  tongue  and  cover  Norse  Paganism  and  Icelandic  black  magick  rituals,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and primitive sound  while  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  with  a  couple  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Carpe  Noctem  are  a  very  great  sounding  straight  forward  black/viking  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Vargsfaeding"  and  "Metamorphoses  Maleficarum".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
