Astar are an international band with members from Italy and Australia that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording goes for a melodic form black metal with elements of dungeon synth and this is a review of their self released 2026 album "Journey Beyond The Ages".
Melodic guitar solos and leads start off the album while the synths also add in elements of dungeon synth and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the music at times. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them and the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
Melodies are also added into a lot of the guitar riffing while some of the tracks also add in a small amount of clean playing. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can also be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling and the album also adds in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with one of the songs also being an instrumental which also brings a medieval atmosphere to the album, female vocals can also be heard briefly and the album also has its symphonic moments. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Paganism, Esoteric and Alchemy themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Astar and if you are a fan of melodic black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Hyperborean Sky" "A Ballad For The Riding Hero" and "Journey Beyond The Ages". 8 out of 10.
