A Mournful Path/Upon Mounds Of Flesh And Ash/Desolate Kreation Records/2021 EP Review

A  Mournful  Path  are  a  duo  from  Australia  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  raw,  blasphemous  and  lo-fi  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "Upon  Mounds  Of  Flesh  And  Ash"  which  was  released  by  Desolate  Kreation  Records.

A  very  fast,  raw  and  lo-fi  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  some  influences  from  the  90's  era.

Dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  chaotic  style.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  also b eing  added  into  the  background  at  times  and  the  whole  recording  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

On  this  recording  A  Mournful  Path  goes  for  more  of  a  raw  and  lo-fi  direction  that  is  very  different  from  the  atmospheric  style  of  their  previous  release.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  blasphemy  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  A  Mournful  Path  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  blasphemous  and  lo-fi  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Upon  Mounds  Of  Flesh  And  Ash"  and  "A  Shroud  Covered  In  Blood  And  Dust".  8  out  of  10.

A Mournful Path Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

A Mournful Path was conceived in late July 2016. A Mournful Path is the product of a long standing collaboration between brothers David and Michael Romeo. We have been playing music for a long time. This entity has finally come to fruition.

2.How would you describe your musical sound?

Our sound is a unique coalescence of modern black, atmospheric and death metal.  We describe it as subterranic tri tonal augmented bone chilling hell.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

A Mournful Path offers an unsettling atmospheric nightmare soundscape into the dark recesses of a dark and tortured soul. Michael’s lyrics are deeply personal. They also offer an insight for his disdain hatred for hypocrisy and religion. We have no religious or political affiliation.

4.According to the fb page the band is also inspired by the writings of Sylvia Plath, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this poet?

She's an American author and poet. She committed suicide at the age of 30. Michaels words are references to her poetry.  A lot of her poetry is deeply personal, bitter, very very dark and painful. A lot of our lyrical content is based upon her work.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'A Mournful Path’?

Everyone has their own path. I chose “A Mournful Path” because nothing is certain. Work hard and expect nothing.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding your line up or do you chose to remain a duo?

Michael and I will always control all aspects of production. We have no intention or plans to expand the line-up.

7.Currently the band is signed to 'Inverse Records', are you happy with the support that they have given you so far?

Inverse Records is the perfect choose because it allows to have total creative control. We are very pleased to be part of their roster.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

This all relatively new. We have only been together for (9) months. The reaction has been great so far. “From the Wreckage of Humiliation” has been received very well. It was the first song that we collaborated together.

9.When can we expect either an ep or full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

October / November of this year (2017) exclusively on Inverse Records. We will make the decision on the length prior to the release. Our direction will remain the same, but our music will evolve. This promises to be more ferocious than our previous release.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Svartidauði, Horna, Sargeist, 1349, Godflesh.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Family.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We would like to thank everybody for their support and response to our music. We can’t wait to unleash our next release late in the year
