Portugal's solo project Antiquus Scriptum has returned with a new recording which shows the music moving way from the black and thrash metal elements of previous releases and goes for a mixture of dark ambient and folk music and this is a review of his self released 2026 ep "Sluagh-Ghairm(Ou uma Elegia aos Celtas)".
Celtic folk instruments and percussion start off the album while the synths also add in elements of dark ambient and dungeon synths. Female vocals and field recordings can also be heard briefly along with the music also capturing the atmosphere of a fantasy movie soundtrack and a couple of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Nature sounds are also added into certain sections of the recording while a lot of the songs also stick to more of an instrumental direction. A lot of the tracks also sound very different from each other, samples and sound effects are also utilized at times and the album also adds in some Emperor and Marduk covers.
On this recording Antiquus Scriptum move away from the more extreme side of metal and goes for a mixture of dark ambient, dungeon and folk music which is different from different releases. The production sounds very dark while the song themes focus on the Celtic People and tribes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Antiquus Scriptum and if you are a fan of dark ambient, dungeon synth and folk music, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Os Guerreiros de Camelot " "A Lenda de Cú Chulainn" "A Saga de Mabinogion" and "Echoes From The Past". 8 out of 10.
