Baase Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

No one will have heard of Baase before, because the project is new. Baase is the opposite of the other projects I've been part of or I am currently part of. So much metal strives for perfection, in the writing, in the production, in the playing. I'm less interested in that these days. Baase is about imperfection. It's a place for unplanned, imperfect things. Unnamed things. It's about the beauty and awe of chaos.

2.Recently you have released a demo, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

The demo was written and recorded in a day earlier this month. I think the raw approach is appealing to those of us who are looking for a sense of unpredictability, danger - those who prefer Dionysus to Apollo. The songs are the result of whatever my hands chose to play the morning I decided to record. They're just things that appealed to me that day. I'm not sure I could even remember how to play them now.

Since all my gear was already set up, when I work in the night (insomnia) I recorded another song - which I've since released.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music?

The desire to make meaning from emptiness, godlessness. The relationship of weakness to strength, both within and without. Solitude.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Baase'?

Baase means death.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the demo cover?

It's a photograph I took. But I be surprised if you were able to tell what it was a photograph of. But there's something about it I like. An unknown figure on the path ahead, in the snowstorm, the fog.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

We own so little in life. But I own Baase. And I like it that way. For the moment at least.

7.So far very little is known about the solo project, do you prefer to keep a lower profile?

I'm not interested in social media or AI or any of that. This project belongs to a different world. If you find the music and like it, great. If not. Great. It doesn't matter. I don't care.

8.Are there any plans for a full length also where do you see this project heading into musically during the future?

A full length - I doubt it. I plan on recording more music. But each song is a moment in time - an organic thing. These tracks will never be played live or rerecorded. So just one version of each track will ever exist. And I'm not sure a working on a full length can be done in that way. Too long. But never say never.

9.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I've been revisiting early Emperor a lot recently. And Darkthrone. Of course Paysage D'Hiver. I love the new Yellow Eyes record. So the same as everyone else I guess. I also listen to lots of ambient, electronic and classical.

10.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

No. Thanks for taking the time.
