Æþelruna are a solo project from the United Kingdom that plays a very atmospheric and epic form of folk influenced pagan black metal and this is a review of his self released 2022 album "Risci Bita Wudu" which will be released in October.
Dark soundscapes and folk instruments start off the album along with some clear pagan vocals and chants a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Acoustic guitars can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and the music also has its epic and symphonic moments.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the vocals are also done in more of an angry black metal shouting style.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding along with some choirs also being utilized added into some parts of the album. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style as well as the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody and most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly towards the end. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Norse and Anglo Saxon Paganism and the relationship between paganism and Christianity in the days of conversion.
In my opinion Æþelruna are a very great sounding epic and atmospheric pagan black metal solo project with elements of folk music and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Saga hƿæt ic hatte". 8/5 out of 10.
