Lithuania's Au-Dessus have returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of a dissonant style of post black metal with elements of sludge metal and this is a review of their 2022 ep "Mend" which will be released on April 29th by les Acteurs de L'Ombre Productions.
Atmospheric sounding drones start off the ep before going into a heavier direction while the slower sections of the songs also bring in elements of sludge metal. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast b eats can be heard.
Dissonant structures can also be heard in some of the riffing while the tremolo picking also gives the songs more of a raw feeling when they are utilized. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the tracks also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the music also adding in a great amount of post metal touches and at times the music also shows an influence of the classic Norwegian style.
On this recording Au-Dessus takes the modern dissonant and post styles of black metal and mixes it with the classic Norwegian era and elements of sludge metal to create a very diverse recording. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics darkness, havoc and social issues.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Au-Dessus and if you are a fan of dissonant post black metal with elements of sludge metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Lethargy" and "Alienation". 8 out of 10.
