Vital Spirit are a duo form Vancouver B.C, Canada that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a musical style they describe as being 'Saccharine Black Metal Of The West" and this is a review of their 2022 album "Still As The Night, Cold As The Wind" which will be released in May as a joint effort between Vendetta Records and Hidden Tribe.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the riffs also adding in a lot of melody and clean playing can also be heard in some parts of the recording.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while all of the musical instruments on the album also have a very powerful sound to them. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and at times acoustic guitars and folk instruments can also be heard.
Elements of Spaghetti Western music and cowboy psychedelia can also be heard in some parts of the recording, A couple of the tracks are also long and epic in length and as the album progresses they also bring in a neo-folk song as well as the closing song also adding in a brief use of growls. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover the American Indian Wars Of The Southwest from the mid 18th century to the late 19th century.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Vital Spirit and if you are looking for something that is very original sounding, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Blood And Smoke" "The Long Walk" and "Lord of The Plains". 8 out of 10.
