This is a review of a split album between Ireland's Malthusian and U.S.A's Suffering Hiur called "Time's Withering Shadow" which will be released in May by Invictus Productions and we will start off the review with Malthusian a band that has had been featured before in this zine and on this recording plays a very experimental, bestial and cavernous mixture of black, doom and death metal.
Their side of the split starts out with a very slow, dark and heavy sound which also introduces elements of doom metal onto their side of the recording. Vocals are a mixture of cavernous yet bestial death metal growls and black metal screams while both of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with the music also being more experimental than their previous release. When guitar leads are utilized they are also done in a very dark yet melodic style as well as the faster sections of the songs also adding in a decent amount of blast beats, tremolo picking can also be heard in some of the faster riffing, harsh noises and acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover death, darkness, chaos and Gnosticism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording Malthusian and if you are a fan of experimental, bestial and cavernous black, doom and death metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Delirium".
Next up is Suffering Hour who goes for more of an experimental and dissonant style of blackened death metal on this release.
Their side of the split starts out with some acoustic guitars and stringed instruments before going into a heavier direction. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar while clean playing can also be heard at times along with most of their tracks also being very long and epic in length.
All of the musical instruments on their side of the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with the music also being more experimental than their previous releases. At times the music also gets very dissonant sounding as well as the vocals also adding in a mixture of death metal growls and black metal screams, tremolo picking can also be heard in some of the faster riffing. Folk instruments can also be heard briefly and they close their side of the split with a cover of Mighty Sphincter's "Reresection". The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Life And Death, Loss Of Time and Sadness themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Suffering Hour and if you are a fan of experimental and dissonant blackened death metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Temporal Lapse".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of black and death metal. 8 out of 10.
