Vaamatar are a duo from Los Angeles, California that plays an old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2022 album "Medievalgeist" which will be released in may by Iron Bonehead Productions.
Sounds of war start off the album along with a small amount of synths before going into a heavier direction. When the music speeds up a lot of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling and dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with the music also being very heavily rooted in the 90's era and the solos and leads are also done in a very dark yet melodic style.
The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with one track also adding in a brief use of clean playing and as the album progresses synths and the sounds of war also make a brief return before returning back to a heavier direction, acoustic guitars can also be heard on the closing track. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Philosophy, Death, Famine and Magick themes.
In my opinion Vaamatar are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Plundering Claws" and "Axe of Dolor". 8 out of 10.
