Finntroll are a band from Finland that is very well known in the metal community with a musical style on this recording that I would describe as being pagan/black metal mixed in with some folk music and this is a review of their 1999 album "Midnattens Widundet" which was released by Spikefarm.
Drums range from slow to mid paced drumming with not much in the way of fast playing or blast beats, while the keyboards bring a very dark and atmospheric sound to the music with some accordions that bring a Finnish folk music feeling to the music, as for the bass playing it has a very strong and powerful tone with heavy riffing that dominates throughout the recording.
Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid paced pagan/black metal riffs with a good amount of melodies and some folk music influences being thrown into the riffing, while the lead guitars are very melodic sounding guitar solos and leads.
Vocals range from high pitched black meta l screams, shouts, spoken word parts and some clean singing, while the lyrics are written in Finnish and cover a battle between trolls and a christian tribe, as for the production it has a very strong, powerful and heavy sound where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion this was a great album from Finntroll which had a more black metal sound than their later releases while still blending in the folk music elements they become famous for and if you are a fan of this band, you probably already own this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Svartberg" "Bloodnott" and "Midnattens Widunder". RECOMMENDED BUY.
